Priestess Amy's Apathetic Agnostic Web Site I am a new member of the church of the Apathetic Agnostic.  As an agnostic I believe that if there is a God out there, He/She/It has absolutely no concern about what actually goes on here on earth.  I have come to this conclusion after intense suffering and soul searching, trying to decide if there was anything out there at all to help me in my difficult times.
I have come across a few truths in my studies
1)  If in fact there is a God out there, He doesn't really care what happens here.  If He did, people wouldn't be allowed to starve to death every day, O. J. Simpson would have been convicted of first degree murder, and little children would never get incurable forms of cancer or get mauled by dogs.
2)  The second that religious fervor enters the brain, the wits tend to pour out the ears.
3)  If you don't pretend to be a Christian, you are not welcome in the Church.
4)  If you don't give money to the Church, YOU aren't welcome in the Church.
5)  Genuine solid questions asked in a chatroom full of fundies will only get you flamed.
6) The only Soverign one can allow to rule themselves is Reason.  The first law of reason is that what exists, exists, what is, is.

Agnosticism/Atheism Quotations
Bertrand Russell In conclusion, there is a marvelous anecdote from the occasion of Russell's ninetieth birthday that best serves to summarize his attitude toward God and religion. A London lady sat next to him at this party, and over the soup she suggested to him that he was not only the world's most famous atheist but, by this time, very probably the world's oldest atheist. "What will you do, Bertie, if it turns out you're wrong?" she asked. "I mean, what if uh when the time comes, you should meet Him? What will you say?" Russell was delighted with the question. His bright, birdlike eyes grew even brighter as he contemplated this possible future dialogue, and then he pointed a finger upward and cried, "Why, I should say, 'God, you gave us insufficient evidence.'" Al Seckel, in Preface to Bertrand Russell on God and Religion

Agnosticism
General Information Agnosticism is the philosophical position that it is impossible to know about the nature or existence of God. The term was coined in 1869 by Thomas H Huxley from the Greek agnostos ("unknowable") to refer to his own conviction that knowledge is impossible on many matters covered by religious doctrines. Agnosticism is therefore concerned with questions of Epistemology, the examination of human knowledge; it considers valid only knowledge that comes from ordinary and immediate experience. Agnosticism is distinct from Atheism on the one hand and Skepticism on the other. Atheists reject belief in the existence of God. Skeptics hold the strong suspicion or probabilistic estimate that God does not exist. Agnostics refuse to make such judgments. The agnostic position is as old as philosophy and can be traced to the pre Socratics and to the skeptics of ancient Greece. In modern times, agnosticism became prevalent during the 18th and 19th centuries, mainly because of the growing mass of scientific data that seemed to contradict the biblical position and because of the disagreement of theologians and church authorities over the use of textual and historical criticism in the interpretation of the Bible. Many of the best known philosophers have been agnostics. Among them are Auguste Comte, William James, Immanuel Kant, George Santayana, and Herbert Spencer. BELIEVE

Agnosticism
Are you just a "brain in a vat"
hooked up to a powerful computer?
In ordinary conversation the term 'agnosticism' usually means doubt about the existence of God, or (more strongly), the view that no one can know whether or not God exists. Philosophical agnosticism (or epistemological agnosticism ) is a generalization of that view to all of knowledge; it is the theory that no one can ever really know anything, or at least that no one can know anything for certain. Why not? Supposedly because it is "conceivable" that we might turn out to be wrong about any particular piece of knowledge. But of course lots of absurd things are conceivable. It is conceivable that you are only dreaming, and that the earth does not really exist. It is conceivable that you are a brain in a vat somewhere on a planet in another galaxy, hooked up to a powerful computer that only makes you think you are living on earthwhen in fact there never was an earth. But it should be pretty obvious that such wild suppositions, while "conceivable", in no way count against our actual knowledge that the earth does in fact exist. It is not a legitimate test of knowledge to demand that you cannot conceive that something is false.

Atheism, agnosticism Free Thought. An opening note Atheism and agnosticismare not the same, although they are equated in popular thought.
http://members.aol.com/nifndrson/atheist.htm
An opening note Atheism and agnosticism are not the same , although they are equated in popular thought. Atheism is, generally, belief that there is no deity. There are, however, many different kinds of athiests, such as:
  • Anti-Spiritualism/Materialism/Anti-Religionism: The belief that not only is there no deity, but that Religion is the foundation of all human misery. Some extremists believe religion of all kinds should be abolished.
  • Free Thinkers : generally not so extremely anti-religion, but believe in the power and responsibility of human reason.
  • Spiritual Atheists: those who believe in some power larger than, but encompassing, humanity, but that reject all literal interpretations of an anthorpomorphic deity.
  • Secularists : generally those folks who have no interest in religion or deity at all.
Agnosticism, on the other hand, is different. Most agnostics profess ignorance they do not reject the possibility of a deity or deities, but confess they cannot be sure based on the evidence. They can generally be categorized as:
  • Those who don't know if there's a deity
  • Those who believe there is a "higher power", but no absolute certainty of her/his/its/their nature or will

AGNOSTICISM
The word "agnosticism" was coined by 1869, by Huxley. What is agnosticism ? Most people would answer to this question : "agnosticism is someone who is neither atheist or theist ; someone who is not sure". Unfortunately, this view is flawed. Indeed Madalyn Murray O'Hair wrote about this confusion : " Popularly, the word agnostic has been corrupted (just as the words Atheist and Epicurian have been corrupted) to mean to the man in the street, `I don't know whether there is a god or not` If such a definition was correct, weak atheism would be included in agnosticism. Weak atheism is not a pretention of certainty, it is therefore "not sure". Also, no one can be "neither atheist nor theist", indeed the two terms do not accept a third alternative. Either you believe in gods, or you do not : the law of excluding middle prevents otherwise. What then would be an acceptable definition ? The #atheism web site provides us the answer : "

Agnosticism
Agnosticism is a concept, not a religion. It is a belief related to the existence or non-existence of God. An agnostic is a person who feels that God's existence can neither be proved nor disproved, on the basis of current evidence. Agnostics note that theologians and philosophers have tried to to prove, for millennia, either that God exists or that God does not exist. None have succeeded.

http://david.blackledge.com/agnostic.html
My Agnostic Beliefs You may want to look at the home page of the "Agnostic Church" .. he seems a little out there, but his basic idea is pretty good, and it hopefully answers a lot of questions.. here's a quote from one of his pages.. containing a good definition of Agnosticism. ..."big tent" agnosticism. As defined by Huxley (who coined the word "agnostic"): "Agnosticism is not a creed but a method, the essence of which lies in the vigorous application of a single principle. Positively, the principle may be expressed as in matters of intellect, follow your reason as far as it can take you without other considerations. And negatively, in matters of the intellect, do not pretend that matters are certain that are not demonstrated or demonstrable." ... Another quote I like is something to the effect of "I am an Agnostic. I do not pretend to know the things that other fools are sure of.".. I don't recall who it's from (somebody famous, though ;] ). Some say that Agnosticism is the only real religious choice of the "thinking man"... or "free thinker." I believe that religion is one of man's basic needs, and so do not fault anybody for believing what they do. We, with our rational minds, have the need to not have "loose ends" which requires a belief in something that ties up all of those loose ends unquestionably. Let's take an example: Does the universe have a physical boundary? As I see it, there are three possibilities
