81. Atheism Awareness: Welcome To Atheism Awareness!
Addresses the myths and misconceptions about atheism. Offers definitions of the basic concepts, questions and answers and recommended books.
http://atheismawareness.home.att.net/
Welcome to Atheism Awareness! I'm glad you stopped by and hope you enjoy your visit. Why is atheism so misunderstood by many theists and even some atheists? Perhaps the taboo associated with atheism is the result of misconceptions, misunderstanding and myths? This page was not designed to de-convert anyone. The purpose of Atheism Awareness is to educate people about atheism and atheists. Atheism Awareness strives to eliminate the preconceived biases about atheism and atheists that have persisted throughout history and continue to do so. Even in this day and age of science, technology and instant global communications we are still faced with misinformation about people, cultures, religions and other means of identification that can often lead to bigotry, racism and prejudice. The amount of misconceptions, misunderstandings and myths that we spread about each other is phenomenal. The goal of Atheism Awareness is to help dispel those misconceptions, misunderstandings and myths about atheism and atheists. I wanted to make this as easy as possible. I don't want visitors to need a doctorate in philosophy or theology to understand the concepts and ideas presented at Atheism Awareness. There will be times when more complicated answers are required, but I will make every effort to keep them simple. If you find there is something you do not understand then please do not hesitate to email me and ask for clarification.

Cool Things About Being a Creationist

by Volo and Neurovore
Channel Policy Channel #atheism is open to people of all beliefs as a forum for discussion and debate of matters pertaining to the existence or non-existance of a god or gods. The channel is however run by atheists and it should be expected that the atheist viewpoint will predominate. Debate is welcome and encouraged. The channel may also be considered a community of atheists and freethinkers and is open for any topic of discussion of general interest to those on the channel. However, debate and focused discussion shall take precedence over idle chat. There are few channel rules, the utmost being personal respect for other members of the channel. Bear in mind religions and beliefs are not people and have no feelings. Personal respect will not necessarily extend to one's religion or faith. If any channel visitor is offended by the atheistic viewpoint of the channel they are welcome to leave. Thank you, and welcome to #atheism on

Strengthening Your Atheism - The Psychological Explanation for Religion Introduction The Embryonic and Parental Shell Theory Father and Mother Figures in Religions The Fittest Religion Survives ... Links Welcome to our web site!
Who is this website meant for?
First and mainly - for all of you whose minds tell you religion doesn't make sense and who would like to consider themselves atheists, but whose hearts have these moments of doubt. Those of you who are skeptic of religious beliefs, but in times of stress find themselves calling for God's help. Those of you who can outwardly present clear-cut and well-presented atheist ideas, but have this yanking "but yet...." in the back of their heads.
This site intends to show you that these doubts and inner feelings are not a sign of divine presence lingering about, but rather the opposite: they are prove of the human origin of religion. Once you've learned and taken in the essence of the "Embryonic and Parental Shell Theory" that is presented on the next pages, you will better understand why it is so difficult to shake off religious inclinations against all better knowledge. Understanding the psychological origin of religion will help you to strengthen your atheism and aid others who attempt to shed the irrational religious misconceptions.
Let's move on to the Introduction!

Atheism is the absence of belief in God. Atheists are people who do not believe in God or other spiritual beings. Some atheists go further and deny that God, or other spiritual beings, exist. Agnostics Agnostics, in the popular sense, are people who have doubts about the existence of God. They don't believe that God exists, but they don't believe that God doesn't exist, either. There are probably over a billion people who don't believe in God, but don't go as far saying that they are certain that God doesn't exist. The strict meaning of Agnostic is not the same as this popular meaning. An agnostic in the original sense of the word is a person who thinks that we can't ever know about anything other than the material world, and therefore that the question as to whether God exists or not is one that can never be answered. Reasons for Non-Belief People are non-believers for many reasons, among them:

Make it known on the Discussion Forum The most influential Catholic lay group during the Franco period was the controversial Opus Dei (Work of God). This group did not fit conveniently into any political category. Although it denied any political aims, its members played pivotal roles in the modernization of the economy under Franco and in the subsequent liberalization of politics and government. At the same time, they were theologically conservative, and their desire for modernization was far from radical. They believed that economic reforms would improve society to the extent that thoroughgoing political reforms would be unnecessary Opus Dei was founded in 1928 by an Aragonese priest, Jose Maria Escriva de Balaguer y Albas, and it was subsequently recognized by the Roman Catholic Church as its first secular religious institution. Although attention has been drawn primarily to its activities in Spain, it is an international body with members and associates throughout the world. Members take a vow to dedicate their professional talents to the service of God and to seek to win converts through their missionary zeal. The organization in Spain has emphasized professional excellence, and it has expected its members to serve in important government positions

Atheism
Defined Atheism - What Is It?
Atheism is the belief that there is no God. Some atheists often argue this blanket statement because, they offer, there are two different types of atheists, usually referred to as "strong" or "weak" atheists. Before we continue, let's first define the relevant forms of belief as described in various atheist literature:
Theism - The belief in a god (there are also different varieties of theism, but the common thread is a belief in one or more supernatural deities).
"Strong" Atheism - The belief that there is no god, or cannot be a god ( The Encyclopedia of Philosophy describes the most common version of an atheist as "... a person who maintains that there is no God"
"Weak" Atheism - Lacking belief in a god ; lacking belief in a certain god.
Agnosticism - The belief that it cannot be known if there is a god. Atheism - The Variations Explained
The "weak" version of atheism is problematic. There are essentially only three real positions of belief one can take rationally: (a) there is a god; (b) there is no god; (c) I don't/can't know if there is a god. A "weak" atheist, by claiming to simply lack belief, chooses to not take a stand on the issue. By not taking a stand, he is allowing that there may be a god, and this is simply agnosticism. Often the claim of being a "weak" atheist comes from a desire to (i) deny the existence of a god, while (ii) not having to defend the "strong" position, which, as we'll see below, is very difficult, if not impossible, to defend.

97. Does God Exist?
A brief summary of the most powerful arguments in favor of the existence of a personal Creator God.
http://www.christian-faith.com/atheism/DoesGodexist.html
Does God Exist?
I shall always be convinced that a watch proves a watchmaker, and that a universe proves a God. Voltaire Here we have the saying of an great influential thinker, who was by no means a Christian. Multitudes of great minds have believed and do believe in God's existence, but today some would have us think that belief in God is illogical, foolish and incompatible with observable facts. Obviously the question is important. If there is a God to whom I owe allegiance, honor and respect, I would be a fool to ignore Him. If such a God does not exist, this will affect everything also - even more so if the Christian Bible correctly describes God. It is worth taking some time to consider the question. I don't believe that anyone can give a mathematical proof of the existence of God. But we can show that God's existence is far more likely to be a reality than his non-existence. Unless the atheist can show that a Supreme Being is a logical impossibility and prove all their premises, the case for atheism remains very weak. Atheists claim we can know that God does not exist. A Russian Believer answers Communist authorities on this point What follows now are several arguments for the existence of God which I believe are very strong.

  • Name: Atheism
  • Definition: Atheism is a) the disbelief in the existence of God or any other deity, or
    b) the doctrine that there is neither god nor any other deity. (1) The word comes from two Greek word roots: a , which means "not," and theos , which means "god." (2)
  • History: Atheism has its roots in both Eastern and Western ancient cultures. While the philosophers of ancient Greece were debating the characteristics of their gods, the Indian Vedas were also questioning the power and origin of the deities of their belief system. These debates, in both cultures, eventually led to questions concerning the actual existence of any gods. These questions did not gain widespread recognizition until much later, however. Atheism as it is known today largely developed in Western culture, and had its first great entrance onto history's philosophical stage during the Enlightenment. (3) Early Christian thought set some of the groundwork for later atheist arguments. Christian thinkers debated the characteristics of God and tried to prove, through reason, the existence of God and the existence of the Christian idea of God. Anslem, for example, in the Ontological Argument for the Existence of God, argued that God is that which there is nothing greater, and since a real God is greater than an imagined one, then God must exist. Other Christian thinkers did not accept Anselm's reasoning here, but offered other arguments on why God had to exist. Aquinas tried to present God as a "first mover," as one who set the world in motion, and without whom nothing would exist. He argued that objects and their existence proved the existnce of its creator. (4)

Last updated July 17, 2002 visitors so far. Welcome to ! Here I will share my thoughts about science and religion, skepticism, and whatever else seems relevant. (I also write essays about other subjects; see my page for more.)
I am an Atheist, a Skeptic, and a Rationalist
I'd like to state at the outset that I consider myself a "moderate atheist," which is to say, I am not "anti-religious." I do not hold all religious believers in contempt, I do not believe that having faith means you are necessarily ignorant or stupid, and I do not campaign against religion. Nor do I rant about the "evils" of religion, bringing up the same tired old examples of the Crusades, the Inquisition, etc. I do have major problems with certain religious beliefs, and the behavior of certain religious believers, and I have no problem expressing my views in a provocative manner (see my essays). I also strongly believe in the separation of church and state. And ultimately, I believe that religion is an irrational (in the literal, not pejorative, sense of the word) belief system on the same level as any other superstition. Religion is not necessarily harmful, and in some ways, I think it can serve a valuable function in society. However, it is an inferior tool for coping with the world, and in my opinion, humanity would be better off progressing beyond the need for religion.
