21. Background And Origins Of The Reformed Baptist Church Inverness Scotland
From 1966 1969 I had been the Pastor of the Inverness Baptist churchwhich was in association with the baptist union of scotland.

to any degree
with that system and still retain a conscience void of offence to the Saviour who was crucified to grant us the gospel.
Accordingly, a protest was made to the Baptist Union Assembly in October 1969 that the Union forthwith withdraw from the Scottish Churches Council. This was roundly defeated, and although the Baptist church of Inverness resigned its membership of the Union the resignation, at best, was only half-hearted. This was shown to be the case at a later date when the church returned to the fold of the Union once again. With such an unsatisfactory state of affairs, then, there seemed no alternative but for me to resign the pastorate of that church; this took place in December 1969, when we moved, as a family to Edinburgh.
The immediate purpose of the resignation was an attempt to allow the Inverness church to settle into its previous mode of working and thinking. In spite of this, however, the following months were to see some other resignations by a number of people who had come to the same convictions regarding any form of ecumenical involvement, and who had also come to embrace the "doctrines of grace" as the true expression of the gospel of God in the scriptures. Following a meeting in May 1970 with a small group of this number, it was decided that, with God's enabling, a church of "Reformed" and "Baptistic" persuasion be constituted. The necessities of such a move were seen to, and for our own part we returned to Inverness in the November of that year, when I took up the pastoral office of the church

DENNISTOUN BAPTIST CHURCH Our Mission Statement That we will be a Church of vibrant worship of loving and open fellowship That we be engaged relevantly in God's mission to the community through prayer personal witness and practical care History of Dennistoun Baptist Church The Church will celebrate it's 150th anniversary in August 2001. The Church was originally founded in 1851 and first met in North Frederick Street in Glasgow. It moved to a new building in Dennistoun in 1909. This new building seated about 650 people and was regularly full on a Sunday for both services. At one point there were over 600 children in the Sunday School with over 80 teachers! Due to shrinking congregations mainly caused by people moving out of the area as well as substantial repair work needing to be done to the building a decision was made in September 1999 to sell the building. The building was to be demolished and the site used to build 16 flats. An approach was made to the Salvation Army, who meet just accross the road from the Church, with regard to sharing facilities. An agreement was reached and we moved on 30 April 2000. A farewell and thanksgiving service for the old building was held on 8 April 2000 with the Rev Bill Slack, General Secretary of the Baptist Union of Scotland, as our speaker.

Who Are The Baptists?
BAPTISTS are Christians who belong to one of the largest mainstream Protestant denominations. They are to be found in over 200 countries throughout the world. They are not a sect or cult group, nor are Baptists an import from America. Before Baptists emerged in the United States, they were to be found in Britain and Europe. Baptist churches began in England in the early l7th Century and in Scotland in the middle of the l8th Century. The first Baptist church in Scotland was established in the village of Keiss near John O' Groats.
Where are Baptists to be found ? WITHIN the Baptist Union of Scotland there are over 170 churches, with over 15,000 members, located in cities, towns and villages from the Shetland Isles to the Solway Firth. These churches express a common identity through their affiliation to the Baptist Union of Scotland, whose offices are in Glasgow. The Baptist Union of Scotland is in membership of the Baptist World Alliance which represents a community of 100 million Baptists worldwide. The largest number of Baptists is to be found in the United States of America, but the next largest group is in Russia. The number of Baptists is increasing rapidly in Asia, particularly in South Korea, in Africa and in South America. Next Baptism?
