Introduction
As Brethren in Christ, we trace our beginnings from a group known as the River Brethren, which originated about 1778 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Our forbearers bore witness to the beliefs which set them apart by formulating a Confession of Faith. The first confessional statement of about 1780 and others that followed reflect the Pietistic and Anabaptist influences which have shaped our doctrinal understandings. Some one hundred years later the Brethren in Christ adopted aspects of Wesleyan thought which were incorporated into subsequent doctrinal statements. Through the years we have reaffirmed and redefined our essential beliefs. In the 20th century, new doctrinal statements were adopted by General Conferences in 1937 and again in 1961. In 1986 we decided to give written expression to our current beliefs and life. This was done with a sensitivity to and respect for our doctrinal heritage. We regard each previous doctrinal statement of the church as having its own integrity. In preparing the doctrinal statement we affirm an understanding of scriptural interpretation that recognizes
(1) the inspiration and illumination of the Holy Spirit
(2) the centrality of Christ in divine revelation
(3) the New Testament as interpreter of the Old Testament (4) the scriptural focus on piety and obedience (5) the essential value of community consensus in the interpretive process.

The Mennonite Brethren in Christ Church was formed in 1883 by a merger of the Evangelical United Mennonite Church and a Brethren in Christ group known as the Swankites. The Evangelical Mennonites in turn had been formed in 1879 by a merger of the Evangelical Mennonites of Pennsylvania and the United Mennonites of Ontario. The latter group had been formed in 1875 by a merger of the Reforming/Reformed Mennonites and the New Mennonites. The fonds consists of denominational publications and correspondence of the Missionary Church and its antecedents, with particular emphasis on Ontario.

Welcome to
Pax Christi Chorale
Who We Are
Pax Christi Chorale is a Mennonite and Brethren in Christ choir that has maintained a tradition of fine choral singing for the past thirteen years. In recent years we have performed some of the great masterpieces of the choral literature including Handel's Messiah , Mendelssohn's Elijah , Fauré's Requiem , Vaughan Williams' Dona Nobis Pacem , Benjamin Britten's Saint Nicolas and music by Palestrina, Praetorius and Healey Willan. Many of our choristers are local Mennonites, but the choir boasts members from many different faith traditions and cultures, all of whom gather for weekly rehearsals because of their common love of singing. In the fall of 1999, the choir released its first CD recording called Rejoice! We perform two major concerts each year, one in the pre-Christmas season and one in the spring.
Pax Christi Children's Choir
For all performances this season, Pax Christi Chorale will be joined by the Pax Christi Children’s Choir, a new adventure in 2002-03 for children who love to sing. For more information about this exciting new choir for children between the ages of 9 and 14, please call 416-489-4362.

BY ALAN EYRE PAGE 13 1. INTRODUCTION It was the year 1456. Two Germans, Johann Gutenberg and Johann Fust, painstakingly produced the first book printed by moveable type. A beautiful and almost priceless copy, one of the few surviving, can be seen any day in the foyer of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. That book was the Bible. It was in Latin, which only the educated could read. Moreover, it was forbidden by papal decrees that the ordinary man should search the Scriptures for himself. Yet the invention of printing was pregnant with significance: during the following sixty years, books, including God's Word or portions of it in Latin, Greek and Hebrew, spread over Europe and revolutionized education everywhere and indeed human thought itself. It was the year 1522. Martin Luther emerged from his hiding-place in the Wartburg Castle with his translation of the Bible into German. No longer would the market for Bibles be cornered by popish priests and monks. Printers got to work and Luther's Bible became one of the world's best sellers: it ran through 430 editions within his own lifetime! Sincere people in many European countries, tired of centuries of superstition and spiritual tyranny, turned with eagerness to the message of hope and love enshrined in the oracles of God. All over Europe groups of seekers began to come together in homes, in workshops, secretly in woods and even adrift on rivers, eagerly desirous of finding the Truth from God's Word.

The Brethren in Christ Church
The Brethren in Christ Church is the founding denomination of Messiah College. While the denomination is no longer the College's legal owner, the College maintains a covenant relationship with its founding denomination. In other words, the Brethren in Christ Church continues to support Messiah College in unique ways, and the College maintains, nurtures, and cherishes a special relationship with its founding denomination (see Brethren in Christ Church and Messiah College
The Brethren in Christ denomination was founded more than 200 years ago, less than 30 miles from Messiah College's present location. The denomination began around 1775 when a group of Mennonites in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, came into contact with ministers preaching the "new birth."

Savage, who has found his guides in Darwin and Spencer. Beyond its own borders the body has obtained recognition through the public work of such men as Henry Whitney Bellows and Edward Everett Hale, the remarkable influence of James Freeman Clarke and the popular power of Robert Collyer. The number of Unitarian churches in the United States in 1909 was 461, with 541 ministers. The church membership, really nominal, may be estimated at 100,000.
