The Brethren of the Lord
A group of persons closely connected with the Saviour appears repeatedly in the New Testament under the designation "his brethren" or "the brethren of the Lord " (Matt 12:46, 13:55; Mark 3:31-32, 6:3; Luke 8:19-20; John 2:12, 7:3-5; Acts 1:14; I Cor 9:5). Four such "brethren" are mentioned by name in the parallel texts of Matt 13:55 and Mark 6:3 (where "sisters" are also referred to), namely, James (also mentioned Galatians 1:19), Joseph, or Joses, Simon, and Jude ; the incidental manner in which these names are given, shows, however, that the list lays no claim to completeness. Two questions in connexion with these "brethren" of the Lord have long been, and are still now more than ever, the subject of controversy: (1) The identity of James Jude , and Simon; (2) the exact nature of the relationship between the Saviour and his "brethren". (1) The identity of James, Jude and Simon. James is without doubt the Bishop of Jerusalem (Acts 12:17, 15:13

  • Date of Birth:
  • Birth Place: Schrisheim in Germany
  • Year Founded: Brief History: With the end of the Thirty Years War in 1648, the German principalities were given the freedom to choose between the Catholic, Lutheran or German Reformed traditions as their established faiths. But the established churches were not satisfactory for some. Pietism began to gain influence among people who felt that the churches were too mechanical. Alexander Mack agreed with the pietists position that there was a needfor a more personal and spiritual experience in religion. But unlike the pietist who believed that baptism was merely spiritual, he believed in adult baptism and the importance of water in the baptismal act (Brubaker, 2). On a summer day in 1708, Alexader Mack rebaptized eight people in the river Eder, thus initiating the "Brethren movement." The Brethren, officially known as the German Baptists throughout the nineteenth century (Melton, 441), mixed pietism with the Anabaptist tradition, blending a renewed emphasis on spirituality with the Anabaptist emphasis on outward expression of faith. They were specially influenced by the

    Statistics on MB pastors.

    Who are our pastors?
    And how are they doing?
    Jim Coggins
In 1993, Lyle E. Larson and J. Walter Goltz, in cooperation with the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada, conducted a detailed survey of pastors and their spouses in 21 denominations across Canada. Questionnaires were sent to 181 of the 335 Mennonite Brethren pastor households; 66 pastors (64 of them male) and 58 spouses (57 of them female) responded. The results were expected in some cases, surprising in others. On the whole, Mennonite Brethren pastors, their challenges and their ministries are similar to their counterparts in other evangelical denominations. However, there are also some significant differences. With the permission of Lyle E. Larson, J. Walter Goltz and the EFC, we present the following summary of the MB results.
    Who are our pastors?
The average Mennonite Brethren pastor is 46 years old (slightly higher than the evangelical average) and has about 15 years of pastoral experience in three pastorates. Ninety-seven percent of MB pastors are married (for an average of 22 years), and 88% have children (an average of 3.3 children). These MB pastors and their spouses come from stable homes. Only 1.5% of MB pastors and 3.4% of spouses come from families in which there was a divorce or separation. Eighty-two percent of MB pastors described their relationship with their fathers and mothers as accepting or supportive (another 3% said their relationship with their fathers was fantastic; 11% said their relationship with their mothers was fantastic.)
