She and her husband, Eberhard, began their Christian community in 1920, in their native Germany, after reading Jesus' Sermon on the Mount and determining his words were meant for today as much as for two thousand years ago. Today, the Bruderhof (the name translates as "place of brothers") is a Christian community movement with over two thousand members on three continents. Members still adhere to the Arnold's original vision for a life of radical Christianity where nonviolence, service to others, prayer, and fellowship are a natural part of every day. In this chapter from her memoir, A Joyful Pilgrimage (Plough 1999), Emmy Arnold recounts the first days of the Bruderhof's beginnings, in the rural village of Sannerz, Germany. The Bruderhof Communities: Some experiences, observations and resources. by Wayne and Betty Chesley We lived at the Bruderhof communities for a little less than two years. We had visited them regularly for several years before we made a "leap of faith", sold off most of our belongings, terminated my career, and committed ourselves to "The Life". We joined the Bruderhof thinking that we had found a church that was fully living out the teachings of the New Testament. That was the challenge often made to us by Bruderhof friends, "If you can find a group that is living more in accordance with the New Testament then tell us so that we can join it too." We tried to adapt ourselves to a different way of living out the scriptures, but at some point we just could not go along with what we saw were clear violations of the teachings of Jesus, teachings that were fundamental to the Bruderhof's claims about itself. We know how hard it is for people outside of the Bruderhof to believe the shocking stories that come from it's sharpest (and even it's gentlest) critics. And it is easy to dismiss ex-members criticisms (we know, we did it too) as stemming from the bitterness that comes from disillusionment and failure. So we know that what we have written and posted will be easily disregarded of by some. But we hope the serious seeker will consider what we present here.

By "community" I mean a gathered life involving a total commitment to each other. Our homes, work place, community center, and school are all together in one geographic space. We possess no private property and share daily life together. Why would I, a seminary professor, and my wife, a high school teacher, drop everything and move across the country to join the Bruderhof, a Christian community? We were both well on our way to a fulfilling and fruitful life of meaningful work. So why the change? In short, because we were living a slow death of gradual disintegration. As for myself, the explosive energy of my youth had fast become dissipated, not because of reckless living, but as a result of obsessively attempting too much and of trying to hold everything together. It was a meltdown of my own choosing. I was obsessed with trying hard, being good, meeting needs, pleasing God, and doing the right thing. There were so many good causes to join, so much knowledge to master, so many people to meet, so many relationships to build, so many obligations to fulfill, and so many opportunities to explore. But as I plunged into the whirlwind of possibility, I became systematically fragmented. Peace of heart slipped away, peace of life was lost.
