The Bruderhof Communities STATEMENT ON THE DEATH PENALTY We oppose the death penalty in all cases, out of reverence for human life and for God, the creator of life. Death is the ultimate enemy of life; we yield to God alone the power over death and life. We ourselves must not presume to shorten the life of any human being. That would be not less than a crime against God. Even Cain, the first murderer, was not given the death sentence, and no man was allowed to kill him. The statute in Leviticus 24:19-21 states, "When a man causes a disfigurement in his neighbor, as he has done it shall be done to him, fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth; as he has disfigured a man, he shall be disfigured. He who kills a beast shall make it good; and he who kills a man shall be put to death." This was meant to limit revenge; no more harm should be done to the offender than he had done to his neighbor. Jesus went further; revenge is to be left to God. We follow our Lord Jesus Christ, who never punished, or imprisoned, or hurt, or executed anyone while he lived on earth, but fought evil by taking suffering on himself. When the death penalty law was quoted to him Jesus said, "Let him who is without sincast the first stone." We are all fallible; our law courts and government no less so than the people who established them or those who function in them. Innocent persons have been executed in the name of the law. That alone should be reason to eliminate the death penalty. And while human justice implies that similar crimes should receive similar punishment, where is the justice in executing about a hundred murderers in a year when there are tens of thousands of murders committed per year in the USA? Further, while there is no proof that the death penalty deters crime (contrary to the claims of some proponents) it does brutalize our society and creates an atmosphere in which crime flourishes.

The Bruderhof controversy; multifaith dialogue; a Federation religious celebration

Summary:
This week: members of the Bruderhof, a U.S.-based Christian sect, have just bought a large grazing property near Inverell, where they plan to establish a 400-strong community. Local government thinks they'll be good for the economy - but the farmers want them out. Also: the Pope visits a Damascus mosque, and finally we hear from representatives of a number of different faith communities, speaking at "A Sense of Place: Victoria's Multifaith Religious Celebration".
Details or Transcript:
Lyn Gallacher: Today on the program, it’s a moment for multi-faith celebrations
SITAR MUSIC
Ghanesh: My name is Ghanesh, so I am lucky. Every auspicious occasion is started with the prayer of Ghanesh.
Lyn Gallacher: That’s the religious side of the celebrations to mark 100 years of parliament, and you’ll hear more of these festivities later in the program.
But first to a story from rural New South Wales: Inverell, the district famous for its association with the artist, Tom Roberts, has been in the news lately for another reason; Newstead, the property where Tom Roberts painted, has just been bought for over $3-million by the Bruderhof, a wealthy American Christian group. The Bruderhof wants to establish a community there. Inverell Shire Council is saying the Bruderhof will be good for the local economy, but neighbouring farmers aren’t so sure. David Rutledge has this report.

Bush Telegraph Summary Wednesday 31/10/01 Bush Telegraph Summary Story Archive Weather Bruderhof in Inverell - We often hear stories on Bush Telegraph about the decline of country towns - loss of services, young people leaving for the city and so on. So it makes for a nice change to hear of a country town that is attracting a significant number of new residents. The town in question is Inverell, in north-east NSW. It's been chosen as the site for a 400 person commune, by an American religious group called the Bruderhof. That's quite significant for a town of around 10 thousand people. The community at Inverell is enjoying the benefits of having the Bruderhof in town, but not everyone is happy with their arrival. Surrounding farmers are concerned about the impact on land use and the impact quite a solitary group may have on their close knit country community. Radical Love
Living the Sermon on the Mount
Eberhard Arnold
Excerpted from Salt and Light . Available FREE in e-book format.
The cross is the radicalism of love. The peace of the Sermon on the Mount tackles everything at the root. Out of love it gives away the last remnants of property, right down to jacket and shirt, and gives every bit of working strength to the community spirit of absolute unity. As often as love demands it, this peace sacrifices itself and goes serenely twice the distance and gives twice the working time. Without pause, the church of peace conducts an active and creative general strike against all the surrounding injustice of outward unpeace. In this break with the status quo, Jesus recognizes no claims justified by law. He does not allow his church to carry on any lawsuit or to sit in judgment in any court of law. He demands that the church should drop or interrupt its religious worship whenever brothers need to be reconciled, whenever the genuineness of brotherly unity is in question. He places the restoring and maintaining of the unity of love over and against the insincere cult of disunited piety. Here at last the justice and righteousness that was begun in the prophets becomes complete reality in Jesus Christ, which is better than that of all moralists and theologians, of all socialists, communists, and pacifists. For the sap of life flows in it for the plantation of the future, for the living community of perfect peace. Here the salt of the divine inner nature is at work in strength. Here the light of God's heart streams out as the beacon of the city church whose towers proclaim freedom, unity, and dedication. Here what each one wants is wanted and done for all. Here no one lays up possessions and no ones heart is cold with icy fear for their own existence or how to make ends meet. Here the peace of love reigns.

Six Months after September 11
Sarah Taft
On Sunday, March 10, Bruderhof communities across the United States opened their doors to welcome their friends, neighbors, and anyone who wished to attend a gathering in remembrance of the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Officially titled "Six months after 9/11: Finding Hope to carry On," the gathering was an opportunity for everyone to share their thoughts, dreams and fears; to learn from each other and to enjoy fellowship. One of the ways that the Bruderhof gives back to their communities is to hold events like this one, where friends and neighbors are invited to come and share a day of fellowship and a meal. At the gathering at the Catskill Bruderhof in Elka Park, visitors were greeted with warm smiles and wishes of welcome by members of the community. Visitors assembled in the large hall that is used for the meetings and prayer services of the Bruderhof. Glorious rays of light illuminating the entire space flowed in through a large window at one end of the hall. At the front of the hall there were two paintings surrounding a central stage: each one depicted the Twin Towers with fields of lilies dominating the foreground. After the welcome speech and a brief prayer, visitors were then encouraged to share publicly their thoughts, prayers, and dreams. This part of the day was especially emotional, filled with both tears and laughter. One of the most moving moments of the day was the speech by Ms. Ilsa Homer, the mother of Leroy Homer, who was the co-pilot of United Airlines flight 93 which crashed in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Ms. Homer alternately laughed and cried as she openly shared her son's life story, from his exceptional performance in school to his love of flying to his faith in God. Listeners were brought to tears as she recounted how she told her granddaughter, Mr. Homer's niece, that her Uncle Leroy would not be returning home. "All of the angels in Heaven were busy," she said, "and your Uncle Leroy was called by God as a special angel to watch over you."

cccc Eberhard Arnold founded the Bruderhof Communities , a community fellowship and pro-life alternative based on Jesus' "Sermon on the Mount" that grew out of the Youth Movement in post-World War I Germany. Everyone these days seems to be searching for community in one way or another - whether in the form of committed, nourishing relationships at home and at work, support networks, small groups, house churches - even cyberspace. In his time-honored manifesto, Why We Live in Community (Plough 1995), Eberhard Arnold , the founder of the Bruderhof community movement, adds a fresh, engaging voice to the vital discussion of what real community is all about: love, joy, unity, and the great "adventure of faith" shared with others along the way.
Henri J. M. Nouwen has called Arnold's essay, which in book form appears with two interpretive talks by Thomas Merton, "One of the most challenging statements on community that I have ever read. Its radical God-centeredness makes it not only very demanding, but also very inviting, comforting, and reassuring." And Basil Pennington notes, "There is something stark about Eberhard Arnold's statement on community. It is chiseled clearly in the solid granite of faith."
Readers of Eberhard Arnold's books enthuse over the clarity of this vision. Perhaps, as Juli Loesch Wiley of the New Oxford Review suggests, "The undeniable power of Eberhard Arnold's writing owes to the fact that there is absolutely no difference between what he professed to believe and the way he lived."

Against the wind :Eberhard Arnold and the Bruderhof
by Markus Baum ; foreword by Jim Wallis ; [translated and edited by the Bruderhof Communities]
Review:
Baum, a youth conference speaker and host of a young adults' radio program, provides an engaging biography of a revolutionary Christian in early 20th-century Germany. Inspired by religious vision and forced by his father to study theology, Arnold moved increasingly away from the state church, inspired an antibourgeois youth movement, and founded a community based on "common table, community of goods, communal work" but dedicated to marriage and to children. Arnold also influenced Barth, Tillich, and Buber and opposed Hitler. He is hence an important figure for both historians and scholars of contemporary religious thought, but this first biography on him is accessible and enjoyable reading for general audiences as well. Recommended for public, seminary, and academic libraries. Carolyn M. The persecution of the Anabaptists forced them to flee to the north. Many of them found refuge on the lands of some exceptionally tolerant princes in Moravia. There they founded a long-lasting form of economic community called the Bruderhof, a Christian commune. In part they aimed to follow the pattern of the early apostolic community. But they sought community for practical reasons tooas a means of group survival under persecution. Their communities attempted to show that in the kingdom of God brotherhood comes before self. Consolidated under the leadership of Jakob Hutter, who died in 1536, these groups came to be known as "Hutterites".

In community living, it's easy to become complacent, stuck in a rut, says Charles Moore, a member of the Bruderhof Communities. Mission can revitalize a church, and in this article he describes recent humanitarian and peacemaking missions of the Bruderhof, a community group seeking to live out the Sermon on the Mount after the manner of the early Christians.
