Described in the Lonely Planet as a "rococo extravaganza combining the architectural idiosyncrasies of a French church, a Chinese pagoda, the Tiger Balm Gardens and Madame Tussaud's". Caodaism was founded in Saigon in 1925 by the mystic Ngo Van Chieu . His intention was to combine the faiths of all Vitenamese under one supreme being. The cathedral and Holy See at Long Than was built in 1927. At the height of its power in the early 1930's there numbered one and a half million faithful. Noon service at the Cao Dai Temple, Tay Ninh, Vietnam.
Saigon may well be an alluring city. But if you need a break - physically, mentally and spiritually - from this city's frenetic pace during your stay, there are plenty of day trip options out of the city to choose from. Saigon in fact doubles up as great stepping-stone in the south of Vietnam. Many of the traveller's cafes and tour operators in the centre of town can organize these for you, as you're probably smart enough to pass on the public transport. One such excursion and a real highlight for many travellers, is the Cao Dai Cathedral , or Great Temple of the Holy See . As its only 96kms out from Saigon - in Tay Ninh District - you can easily make the trip in one day. The journey out to the cathedral, heading northwest out of Saigon on Highway One, is lined with pancake flat paddy fields and farmland. Its' present day tranquillity belies the ferocious fighting experienced here during wars of previous decades. Tay Ninh District is virtually encompassed by the foreboding lands of Cambodia, and the imposing

Cao Dai draws upon ethical precepts from Confucianism, occult practices from Taoism, theories of karma and rebirth from Buddhism, and a hierarchical organization (including a pope) from Roman Catholicism. Its pantheon of saints includes such diverse figures as the Buddha, Confucius, Jesus Christ, Mu h ammad, Pericles, Julius Caesar, Joan of Arc, Victor Hugo, and Sun Yat-sen. In Cao Dai, God is represented as an eye in a triangle, a symbol that appears on the facades of the sect's temples. The religion's organization is patterned after that of Roman Catholicism, with a pope, cardinals, and archbishops. Worship involves elaborate rituals and festivals. In 1919 Ngo Van Chieu, an administrator for the French in Indochina, received a communication from the supreme deity during a table-moving séance. Chieu became the prophet of the new religion, which was formally established in 1926. A Cao Dai army was established in 1943 during the Japanese occupation of Indochina. After the war the Cao Dai was an effective force in national politics; it first supported, then opposed, Premier Ngo Dinh Diem. In 1955-56 Diem disbanded the Cao Dai army and forced the sect's pope, Pham Cong Tac, into exile. After the communist takeover in 1975, Cao Dai was reportedly repressed by the government. Centers of worship were established in Vietnamese refugee communities abroad, however, and by the early 1990s Cao Dai was reported to have some two million adherents in Vietnam, Cambodia, France, and the United States. Headquarters of the religion are at Tay Ninh, near Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon).

In a small, octagonal pavilion, a group of elderly woman dressed in long, white robes are arranging their hair. It has to be very smooth, not a hair out of place, and twisted into a neat, round bun at the nape of the neck. Some of them also cover their heads with a piece of white cotton, wrapping the bun so that it is concealed and securing the whole thing with a large jewelled hairpin in the shape of a lotus. They do this four times a day - at dawn, at midday, at dusk and at midnight - and, when they are dressed and coiffed to their satisfaction, they make their way to the Great Divine Temple of the Cao Dai. The women with the hairpins, even though they all appear to be at least sixty years old, are student priestesses of the Cao Dai. The ones with bare heads are followers.
From a long, low building on the other side of the temple come a number of very old men. Some are wearing yellow robes, others sky-blue and yet others scarlet. Those with little, round, coloured caps are bishops or even archbishops. Those with tall, winged headdresses are student priests. The man wearing a mitre is a, or possibly the, principal archbishop.

Cao Dai is an attempt to create a perfect synthesis of world religions. It is a combination of Christianity, Buddhism , Islam, Confucianism, Hinduism, Geniism, and Taoism . Established in the Southern regions of Vietnam in the early 1920's, the religion was officially codified in 1926. The functioning center of Cao Daism is located in the Tay Ninh province. Cao Dai literally means high tower or palace, a metaphor for the spender of spiritual growth. The central philosophy of Cao Daism pertains to the duty that the faithful perform for themselves, their family, society and the world at large. Much like Confucianism, this element of the Philosophy pertains to how the individual functions within the context of the community. Plight of the Cao Dai Church
Following are excerpts from the report of Rev. Le Trung Cang on the condition of the Cao Dai Church in Vietnam after years of enduring attacks from the Vietnamese Communist Party and its government. Cao Dai Church was founded in Vietnam with its Holy Temple and headquarters in Tay Ninh province. Millions of Cao Dai followers are now living in southern and central Vietnam. This report was presented at the ceremony to commemorate the announcement of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, organized by the Free Vietnamese Community in Paris on December 05, 1999. Ladies and Gentlemen: Human rights violations today are considered serious crimes by humanity. Governments can no longer hide behind the façade of national sovereignty to cover up their domestic human rights violations. Recent events showed that the United Nations are now willing to intervene by force in the name of human rights in Iraq, Bosnia, Rwanda, Kosovo, East Timor, Sierra Leone and so on. With such hope for people's rights as human beings and their rights to happiness, I consider it my duty to raise my voice alongside with other Buddhist, Christian, and Hoa Hao Buddhist leaders to reveal to the public inside and outside Vietnam, and to the conscience of the world those human rights violations on the Vietnam soil, particularly the anti-religion policy of the Vietnamese government.

Cao Dai struggles for survival in Vietnam By Andy Soloman TAY NINH, Vietnam, April 21 (Reuters) - Cao Dai is a religion under siege in Vietnam. Believers say priests cannot be trained, certain sacred activities are banned and property has been confiscated. Sources say several Cao Dai clergy have also been jailed for actions considered a threat to national security. Fear is pervasive at the Tay Ninh Holy See, the seat of this unique sect that blends Eastern and Western religious philosophies under a banner of ``Love and Justice'' and which counts several million adherents in Vietnam. But that image remains hidden from the scores of foreign tourists who flock to the Tay Ninh Cao Dai cathedral, 100 km (60 miles) southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, to snap pictures of the almost psychedelic temple and white-clad believers. ``The tourists know nothing. They come here and think they are seeing freedom of religion,'' said one man, who like most Cao Daiists, declined to be identified. ``There is so much I want to tell you, but I am frightened of the police. Maybe I can tell you in two or three years.'' Communist-ruled Vietnam vehemently rejects charges it limits religious freedom, and its 1992 constitution enshrines the right to follow or not follow a faith.

A Cao Dai temple, Vietnam
Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity, Hinduism Confucianism and Islam. It is based in the province of Tay Ninh, an hour away from Cu Chi and it currently has 7 to 8 million followers in Vietnam and 30,000 around the world. "Cao Dai” is a metaphor for spiritual growth and literally translates as “high tower” or “palace”. Its followers believe that God was concerned that the multiplicity of religions prevented people from living together in harmony and so gave a third revelation through a spirit called Duc Cao Dai. This revelation grew into Caodaism. Its central philosophy is similar to Confucianism , concerned with how the individual functions within society. The follower has a duty towards themselves, their family, the community and the world as a whole. They must not kill, be dishonest, commit adultery, get drunk or sin by word. Similar to Christianity and Islam, believers worship only one God but they also look to numerous superior spirits for guidance.
