Rationale for Establishing the Center
The Roman Catholic Church in the U.S. is rapidly changing its demographic makeup, and the same may be said of the Episcopalian and other Churches which locate themselves within the overall western Catholic Tradition. Nearly one half of all U.S. Roman Catholics are Latinos/as, and their proportional representation will only continue to increase within the Church. Similar transformations are also occurring in other Christian (western Catholic) Churches. This demographic reality (and its profound social, pastoral and theological consequences) strongly suggests that further research into Latino/a Catholicism, broadly understood, is an urgent and necessary task. Catholic universities, precisely because of their Catholic character, are important as loci for the interdisciplinary, rigorous study of religion beyond the merely descriptive. Indeed, theological reflection on social scientific findings is an especially important and appropriate contribution of the Catholic university.

This document is posted as a reference background to several other documents in preparation, for want of any other easily accessible resource that I can find on the net or elsewhere. My main interest is in the logic of communication. I have already posted a document on this site delineating the problems with Aristotelian logic . Much of the power of Rome, and much other political power, rests upon the misuse and misunderstanding engendered by the weaknesses of categorical Aristotelian logic. These problems permeate and debilitate western culture. Concurrently, I am preparing several documents on Abelard and his analysis of logic and documents on the imperatives of real politic in a backward culture. This document is designed as a real-world exemplar context. I shall update this document if I have the resources to investigate in more detail. If you notice any glaring historical errors or irritating typos, it would be of assistance if you would

    Nicolas of Flue
Canonized on 15 May 1947, Nicolas of Flue , also known as Brother Klaus, hermit and mystic of Obwalden, became known to Confederates over the years as one of the noblest patriotic figures, in the fashion of a "national saint". The majority in Switzerland with over three million partisans, the Roman Catholic Church is obviously well represented in this country. The beginnings
Christianity very quickly penetrated into Switzerland via the merchants and Roman soldiers. The earliest trace of Christian life in Switzerland dates back to the decline of the Roman empire: in 377, Pontius Asclepiodotus, Roman prefect of Sion, had an inscription containing the monogram of the Christ engraved on a renovated official building. From this we can deduce that the population of Sion, from the first half of the fourth century, was primarily Christian. Geneva, Martigny and Coire were the first bishoprics, but Christianization did not truly begin until the Middle Ages, due in particular to the wandering Irish and Scottish monks such as Gall, Ursicinus, Germanus, Romanus, Fintan, Pirmin and Colombanus junior.

How wondrous, that despite these wounds, the Church has continued on,and has produced saints in every age. So, why embrace catholicism?
    http://www.transporter.com/apologia/why_cath.htm
Hundreds of Catholics each year are led to doubt their faith because they do not know the biblical basis of it. What is the biblical basis of our faith? Why are we Catholic?
The first reason to be Catholic is Jesus Christ.
    Who was/is Jesus Christ?
Jesus of Nazareth is the only founder of a religion who was pre-announced hundreds of years before his birth. In Isaiah 53, written several centuries before Christ, we read:
  • (v5)...he was pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins,
Upon him was the chastisement that makes us whole, by his stripes we were healed.
  • (v12)...Therefore I will give him his portion among the great, and he shall divide the spoils with the mighty, Because he surrendered himself to death and was counted among the wicked; And he shall take away the sins of many, and win pardon for their offenses.
Also, see Isaiah 49:1-7; 50:4-11; and the rest of Isaiah 53. In Psalm 22, written as early as 980 BC, we find what could pass for an eye-witness account of the crucifixion of Jesus (the opening words of which he quotes in Matthew 27:46).
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me... All who see me scoff at me... "He relied on the Lord; let him deliver him..." They have pierced my hands and my feet; I can count all my bones... They divide my garments among them; for my clothing they cast lots...

Avery Cardinal Dulles Among the major nations of the Western world, the United States is singular in still having the death penalty. After a five–year moratorium, from 1972 to 1977, capital punishment was reinstated in the United States courts. Objections to the practice have come from many quarters, including the American Catholic bishops, who have rather consistently opposed the death penalty. The National Conference of Catholic Bishops in 1980 published a predominantly negative statement on capital punishment, approved by a majority vote of those present though not by the required two–thirds majority of the entire conference. Pope John Paul II has at various times expressed his opposition to the practice, as have other Catholic leaders in Europe. Some Catholics, going beyond the bishops and the Pope, maintain that the death penalty, like abortion and euthanasia, is a violation of the right to life and an unauthorized usurpation by human beings of God’s sole lordship over life and death. Did not the Declaration of Independence, they ask, describe the right to life as “unalienable”? While sociological and legal questions inevitably impinge upon any such reflection, I am here addressing the subject as a theologian. At this level the question has to be answered primarily in terms of revelation, as it comes to us through Scripture and tradition, interpreted with the guidance of the ecclesiastical magisterium.

    Roman Catholicism: A Biblical Analysis
    By: Brian Schwertley
    Edited by: Stephen Pribble
There are two types of religion in the world today: religions of the imagination (what men and demons have made up) and the religion of revelation (what God by His grace has given to man in the Bible). The purpose of this booklet is to examine some important Roman Catholic doctrines in the light of the Bible and determine if these doctrines are in harmony with, or contrary to, the clear teaching of God’s Word. Because the Roman Catholic Church believes (as does the author) that the Bible is the inspired, infallible Word of God, all good Roman Catholics should study the Bible for themselves and abide by its teachings. As Pope Pius XII stated, “To ignore the Scripture is to ignore Christ.” Authority. The Roman Catholic Church teaches that the Bible and tradition as interpreted by the Church are the final seat of authority in religion. Jesus condemned tradition as a rule for religious authority and exalted the Word of God: “The Pharisees and Scribes asked him, ‘Why do not thy disciples walk according to the tradition of the ancients...?’ But answering he said to them, ‘...in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrine the precepts of men. For letting go the commandment of God, you hold fast the tradition of men.... Well do you nullify the commandment of God, that you may keep your own tradition.... You make void the commandment of God by your tradition’” (Mk. 7:5-13 DB).

Advice for those who have left catholicism, but are still Christian.
    http://members.aol.com/excathlc/home.htm
    What Can an Ex-Catholic Believe?
by Lee Adams Young What can a former Catholic still believe in? In God, in the eucharist, in prayer? I suggest that you and I are in the immediate presence of God, even without the workings of a priest. I suggest that we can communicate with God without ritualistic prayer. These pages are addressed to those who have grown tired of the Catholic faith. Or are uncertain of their faith. These pages reach out to those who continue with the Church, who attend a different church, or who have given up church entirely. The heart of the gospel, I claim, is Jesus's exhortation to love our neighbors as ourselves. Loving someone carries a risk. The eucharist—the Body and Blood of Jesus—is a valuable symbol of this risk. The eucharist can be experienced (without its former magical connotations) if you stay with the Church—or go back to it, or go to another creedal church. Even if you don't go to any church, you are never out of touch with God. Some of you may find yourself at a distance from the Church because of the Vatican—over issues of abortion, women in the priesthood, the marriage of priests, or contraception. But I have no special wisdom to offer about social or political issues. I sympathize with you about these matters, even though I remain silent about them. This Web site offers the following pages: God in the eucharist?

The Truth About Roman catholicism. This amounts to adding to the Word of God, therebyplacing Roman catholicism under God's curse. Deut. 42; Rev. 2218, 19.

The Truth About Roman Catholicism. By M. H. Reynolds
THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH is by far the largest and wealthiest of all the so-called "Christian Denominations." It has consistently claimed to be the only true Churchthe Church which was founded by Jesus Christ during His earthly ministry. In addition, especially in this generation, it has embellished its image and attracted and held members by the claim that it is the one Church which has never changed, All of these claims are false. How-ever, in recent years, the Roman Catholic Church has done a complete about-face, actually boasting of the many changes it has instituted to meet the changing needs of Catholics and non-Catholics alike in this modern age. Is the Roman Catholic Church the one true Church? Are its past and present teachings and practices Scriptural? How has the Roman Catholic Church changed through the centuries? How much has it changed in our lifetime? Have these changes been basic or superficial? Where is the Roman Catholic Church headed? The purpose of this article is to turn the spotlight of truth upon Roman Catholicism both as to its past history and present teachings. Our sincere desire is to be of help to Catholics, many of whom are well aware that, in recent years, their church has been Instituting many changes, most of which have left them confused, uncertain, and deeply troubled. For the first time in their lives, many Catholics are raising serious questions about t their Church, its leaders, its teachings and its practices. They now realize that their church is not united but divided over issues such as birth control, abortion, divorce, celibacy for
