I kicked off the Open Directory Project's Celtic Christianity Section . The Open Directory is a Yahoo like directory with the important distinction that anyone can sign up to manage a category. This means that the directory has literally thousands of editors so sites are validated very quickly compared to Yahoo. If you have a Celtic Christian site or find a good one that is not listed there please sumbit it in the appropriate section. Also if you have some spare time and have a particular field interest please sign up as an editor for your own sub section.

Introduction
What's in a Name?

Purpose
... James Wirrell's Home Page This site attempts to provide a brief overview of Celtic Christianity. Start with the Introduction to Celtic Christianity. See Organizations which are linked to Anglican or Orthodox churches or interdenominational groups. Independent Churches are those Celtic denominations not formally connected to the Anglican, Roman Catholic, or Orthodox bodies. Celtic Liturgies can be found at my Liturgical Resources page. A) Introduction Celtic Christianity has always been close to my heart given my love of early British history. The Celtic church has many lessons to teach the contemporary Church. The early Celtic Christian church was catholic and apostolic in nature, fiercely independent, in tune with creation, yet remaining committed to Scripture and tradition. It drew on the positive aspects of the earlier druidic religion yet remained true to the Faith and thereby was able to transform Celtic society without destroying it. I would like the Anglican Communion to model the ancient Celtic church: catholic and apostolic in nature, resisting of overburdening and corrupting hierarchy and structure, in tune with the created world, remaining committed to Scripture and tradition, and finally acting as a powerful transforming agent to Western society.

What is Celtic Christianity? The idea that there was a ‘Celtic’ flavour of Christianity probably dates back to the time of the Venerable Bede, who saw the older churches of his westerly, Celtic, neighbours as centres for great learning and piety, as well as for more controversial issues of diversity of practice. In the modern era, people continue to look to the piety, learning and colour of the Christianity of early Brittany, Cornwall, Man, Ireland, Scotland and Wales for inspiration and for a model of an early Christianity which was rooted in western Europe. Pilgrims to the ancient churches of Celtic Britain, Ireland and Brittany continue to be moved by the beauty of the setting of the earliest Christian sites. Manuscript collections in libraries all over Europe bear witness to the genius of Celtic Christians.

What we can learn from the Celtic Christians who first brought Christianity to Iceland and the Faeroes.
The Icelanders were keen to know more about their earliest roots in the Celtic monks who brought the Gospel to Iceland. So the leaders of our prayer conference invited Graham McCartney from Northern Ireland to come and teach about Celtic Christianity and give a historical survey of the coming of the first missionaries to Iceland, and to the other Nordic lands from Ireland. Sweden and Denmark received their first Christian influence through Catholic missionaries from Germany, but Iceland and the Faeroes had their first Christian influence from a much purer source. The Catholic church came with a State church system, christening people by power and by the sword, but the Celtic monks came without any weapons or compulsion.
A movement is afoot at present in Great Britain, both among Christians and the wider community, to get back to the Celtic roots. Books, music and musicals are being produced concerning Celtic Christianity and culture.
After listening to Graham McCartney, I have become convinced that the Christianity that was brought to the Northern lands from Ireland in the eighth century is the Christianity that we need in order to become overcomers in the end time.

    Background
Adomnan of Iona - The Life of Columba
      • Comment Adomnan's life of Columba is the collected stories about the life of Saint Columba written on Iona by his successor about 100 years after the saint's death. The stories cover Columba's miracles, prophesies and visions of angels.
      • For me the main interest in the book is the picture of Iona it gives. It is an ideal book to read if you are about to visit Iona or have just visited, as the places mentioned and the scenes described often have remained unchanged since Columba's time. Only a quarter of the 400+ page book is taken up with "The Life Columba", there is a 100 page scholarly and readable introduction, extensive notes and a full bibliography. ( Stuart

The Ecclesiastical History of the English People- Bede
      • Comment An interesting and readable account of the Church in England upto and during the times in which the Celtic Church flourished.
      • Some of Bede's most glowing praise is for the Celtic Saints but it is always tempered with a reminder that their practices, such as dating Easter, did not agree with the Roman practice. (

The latest Christian fad...a significant rediscovery...New Age thinking invading the church...everyone has an opinion on the awakening interest in Celtic Christian spirituality.
I've been a Christian for around forty years. I'd describe myself as both evangelical and charismatic to people who like those kind of labels..
I've always been interested in church history - it seems to me we can learn a lot about the present, and perhaps the future, by examining the experiences of Christians who lived for Jesus in the past. About seven years ago I was thinking about how Christianity needs to find expression within each culture, and that got me to thinking about whether there had ever been a distinctive British form of Christianity. At the same time, I was also thinking about ways to communicate the unchanging Gospel in our rapidly changing, post-modern, post- Christian culture.
I looked at the origins of Christianity in Britain, during the Roman occupation and the so called Dark Ages, a time of great change and uncertainty not unlike today.
The stories of the men and women who brought Christianity to Britain, and an examination of the way they lived struck a chord with me. It challenged me to examine my own faith and spirituality afresh.
