I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Some thoughts on the origins of Celtic Christianity in Wales Celtic Christianity......... a few thoughts from an Anglo-Saxon ! St David A more scholarly approach Good Literary Sources Another history of the Celtic Church ... Home Page As an Anglo Saxon living in the heart of Celtic Wales it has been an eye-opener to look at the influences of the country itself, as well as the example and teaching of the early Christian Saints, on the way that Christianity is evolving in these 'interesting' days. What do we mean by Celtic? (The following is information gratefully gleaned from various web sources including CADW) Celtic is simply an ethnic and cultural grouping used to designate the peoples descended from the Irish, Scots, Welsh, Bretons, Manx and Cornish. There were other peoples in ancient times who were classified as Celts who inhabited what is today France, Belgium, Switzerland, Galicia, Southern Germany, Austria, Bohemia and Galatia. The first Celts to convert to Christianity were the Galatians of whom St.Paul's epistle in the New Testament was addressed. Galatians were descendents of Gauls who invaded Phrygia in Asia Minor (now called Turkey).
The ancient Celts were just another of many European peoples whose language and culture derived from the Indo-European family just as the Germanic or Teutonic, Slavic, Baltic, Hellenic (Greek), Roman (Latin or Italian), Scythian-Sarmatian (Iranian) peoples.

What is Celtic Christianity? Andrew Dunn
The interest today in Celtic spirituality is huge. Whether it is in the art, music, saleable handcrafts, or books about it, or in the growth of modern Celtic communities and retreats, this ancient way of describing how to be Christian, and how to relate to God, God's creation, God's word and God's people, is attracting attention.
"The rediscovery of the Celtic world has been an extraordinary revelation for many Christians in recent years, an opening up of the depths and riches within our own tradition which many of us had not before suspected", writes Esther de Waal in Wales. The breadth of the interest in Celtic spirituality is surprising. People across the theological spectrum find elements in Celtic Christianity that attract them. Liberal Christians find the emphasis on the love of God and inclusiveness irresistible. Conservatives discover in Celtic spirituality a theological and biblical orthodoxy that gives them certainty about its aims and roots, and enables them to explore its spiritual offerings with confidence. Those involved with Creation spirituality, along with green and eco-sensitive believers, delight in the Celtic honouring of creation as God's Second Book. Feminists find the gender equality in leadership honours their discoveries. Earth-centred Christians delight in the maternal principle of the early Celtic cradling which gave women a prominent place in society, mission centres and church.

The Heart of Celtic Christianity
John Scotus Eriugena's Homily on the Prologue to the Gospel of St. John
Christopher Bamford
Forward by Thomas Moore
"Christopher Bamford has written a wonderful book. It combines a rigour of scholarship with a lyrical unveiling of how this wonderful text of Eriugena's can resonate with the hungers and discoveries of our times. It deserves a wide readership. Its lucid depths enrich the mind and awaken the heart to the grandeur of light where the eternal shines." — John O'Donohue , author of Anam Cara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom John Scotus Eriugena was born and raised in Ireland during the early ninth century. Neither monk nor priest but a "holy sage," he carried to France the flower of Celtic Christianity. His homily, The Voice of the Eagle, is a jewel of lyrical mysticism, theology, and cosmology, containing the essence of Celtic Christian wisdom. He meditates on the meaning and purpose of creation as revealed by the Word made flesh, distilling into twenty-three short chapters a uniquely Celtic, non-dualistic fusion of Christianity, Platonism, and ancient Irish wisdom. The translator's "Reflections" make up the second half of this book and attempt to unfold some of the life-giving meaning implicit in Eriugena's luminous sentences. Inspired both by a personal search for a living Christianity and by a sense of the continuity of Western culture, these "Reflections" offer a contemporary, meditative encounter with the Word, or Logos, as mediated by both St. John's Prologue and Eriugena's Celtic homily.

Celtic Christianity
Ecology and Holiness
Edited by Christopher Bamford and Will Marsh "Our God is the God of Heaven and Earth, of sea and river, of sun and moon and stars, of the lofty mountain and lowly valley." St. Patrick These words are perhaps the epitome of the Celtic monk's holy embrace of nature and sense of "ecology." Everywhere in Celtic Ireland, on rocky promontories and lonely hillsides, in hermitages and monasteries, we find a holy intimacy of human, natural, and divine. In this anthology, the stories of the Celtic saints are interspersed with verses, prayers, and sayings attributed to those ancient sages from Patrick and Brigit, through Brandan and Columba, to Aidan and Cuthbert. It is uncertain when or how Christianity first arrived at those westernmost reaches. It seems always to have been there. Legend tells us that Irish bards attended the events on Golgotha "in the spirit." In the Celtic tradition there is a continuity in cosmic process. For the Celt, Christ's death and resurrection was a healing that allows a reconciliation between humanity and nature in God. In this sense, Christianity was always in Ireland, and we seek its historical beginning in vain. If the Celtic Church had survived, perhaps the fissure between Christianity and nature, widening through the centuries, would never have fragmented our Western attitude toward nature and the universe.

WHAT IS celtic christianity? celtic christianity holds to a balancedview of the Biblical doctrines of freewill and predestination.
http://www.grailchurch.org/celtic.htm
menu T HE CAMBRIAN EPISCOPAL CHURCH OF THE GRAIL Ancient Church of Cambria WHAT IS CELTIC CHRISTIANITY? Specifically, Celtic Christianity refers to the branch of Christianity which was unique to the peoples of the British Isles during the early Middle Ages. Although there is some debate over exactly when and how Christianity got to the British Isles, there is no doubt that it was firmly established by the 2nd Century, because Ireneaus, the Bishop of Lyon, had significant interaction with them. The first, great Celtic son was Morien, also known as Pelagius. Pelagius was a spokesman for Celtic theology. Pelagius has been labeled as a heretic by traditional theologians because they favor a Latin version of Christianity. Pelagius' opponent, Augustine, succeeded in expelling the Pelagians out of the Roman Empire during the 5th Century. Augustine became the father of Latin Christianity. Celtic Christianity holds to a balanced view of the Biblical doctrines of free-will and predestination. Ostensibly, these doctrines were the focus of controversy between Augustine and Pelagius. Through the centuries, Pelagian Celts have emphasized the individual's responsibility to obey God's moral law. Latin Christianity has tended to rely upon the strong arm of the state. Celtic Christianity does not have much interest in the grand worship of state religion. Celtic Christians are fond of the small group and a liturgy which is an expression of personal faith. From ancient times, they have had great interest in spiritual gifts, manifestations of the Divine presence, religious revivals, and world evangelism.
