HOW WE RELATE TO OTHER CHRISTIAN DENOMINATIONS
The original vision of The United Church of Canada was that it should be both a United and a Uniting Church. This vision arose from Jesus' prayer for his followers in the 17th chapter of John's gospel. The church's motto "that all may be one" is a quotation from John 17:21. Jesus prayed for his disciples saying, "I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me."
(John 17:20, 21) The unity of the church is based on the eternal unity of the Father and the Son in the Holy Spirit. The church is included in that self-giving unity within God, not for its own sake but "so that the world may believe..." Just as the Father sent the Son into the world, so the Father and the Son send the church into the world to invite everyone, everywhere to join in eternal fellowship of love, light life. The church is to be in the I world, but not

THE POSITION OF MAJOR CHRISTIAN DENOMINATIONS ON CREATION AND INERRANCY
The statements describing the churches' stance on inerrancy and evolution have been taken from their web pages or other official documents. Statements have been chosen that seemed to best describe the church position on inerrancy and that best fit the current position, regardless of historic beliefs. Other writings may indicate a stance either more conservative or more liberal than the statements quoted here. Most Protestant churches have historically placed a high value on individual autonomy, diversity of opinion, and questioning authority, so that the official position of a denomination may not fairly represent the beliefs of the membership.
CHURCHES THAT SPECIFICALLY DISCOURAGE A LITERAL READING OF THE GENESIS ACCOUNT:
Unitarian Universalist Church. "Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and science"
CHURCHES THAT IMPLICITLY OR EXPLICITLY ENCOURAGE OR PERMIT A NONLITERAL INTERPRETATION OF THE BIBLE, OR THAT RECOGNIZE THE TRUTH OF EVOLUTION:
The Catholic Church. "Today, more than a half century after this encyclical, new knowledge leads us to recognize in the theory of evolution more than a hypothesis. ... The convergence, neither sought nor induced, of results of work done independently one from the other, constitutes in itself a significant argument in favor of this theory."

Christian Denominations
It is truly difficult to estimate the number of Christian Denomiations. For the purposes of this page - only denominations found in the United States will be listed. Even so there are potentially hundreds which could be listed. In order to be listed the denomiation must meet one of three criteria -
1. Have a reported membership of over 10,000.
2. Have been established at least 100 years ago.
3. Be of such a level of uniquness, controversy or influence that their inclusion is warrented. Note - In order to be considered "Christian" for the purposes of this page the denomination need only to refer to itself as being Chiristian. The author does recognise that this will include a number of denomiantions or movements which reject or do not adhere to historic doctrines of the Christian faith (ie. The Trinity, the vicarious atonement, salvation by grace, the inspired nature and authority of the scriptures etc.)
Ecumenical Movements
Ecumenical Denomination Links
Many links to the homepages of many denominations. National Council of Chruches of Christ
The NCC is a classic case of a well intentioned but flawed movement. Its ideal was to help break down denominational barriers but instead it has broken down denominations. Most NCC member churches have lost membership since the NCC was formed in the late 1940's. Coincidence? I think not!

The Holy Land Christian Ecumenical Foundation* Conference Summary Opening Prayer Rev. Dr. Frank Trotter prayed for God's goodness and love to sustain us and that we seek guidance and wisdom as we work to strengthen the Christians in the Holy Land. All the speakers reiterated this prayer by emphasizing that what would bring healing to the Holy Land is God's justice and peace. Opening Remarks Rateb Y. Rabie, KHS, President, Holy Land Christian Ecumenical Foundation (HCEF), offered the opening remarks for the Fourth International Conference. He explained the theme for the conference, The Divine Light Still Burns: the Holy Land Christians Endure, was picked because Palestinian Christians continue to carry the light of Christ despite hardship and suffering. He noted that HCEF continues to provide for the housing needs of Christian families. Last year, due to the generous contributions of donors, HCEF was able to send a half million dollars to support construction of housing units for 24 families in Beit Jala. HCEF would like to see support for construction of housing units for 30 families in Taybeh through the Greek Orthodox Housing Project.

Christianity: Do I Have To Join A Church?
WHY ARE THERE SO MANY CHRISTIAN DENOMINATIONS?
Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one... I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one. As you Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The kingdom of heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good seed in his field; but while everybody was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then went away. So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared as well. Making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge. ...the head, from whom the whole body, nourished and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows with a growth that is from God.
