Jo Hudson, pastor of Friends Congregational Church At a recent meeting of the Brazos Valley Ministers' Association, an editor of the Bryan/College Station Eagle reported that journalism in the area of religion and spirituality has exploded in recent years. He pointed out that articles on religion and spirituality are no longer relegated to the "religion" section in the Saturday paper, but are often found in the other sections of the paper to include the "life" and "regional" sections, as well as the front page. People are more and more interested in what is happening in the areas of religion and spiritual life and if people are interested, then that is what newspapers are going to write about. This is especially true in the on-going discussion of the acceptance of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transsexual people into the life of organized religions. While this discussion seems to center on Christianity, and those will be the examples discussed in this article, the other major religions of the United States and the world, to include Judaism and Islam are also engaged in the debate. (It is important to note that the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship as a denomination has long been supportive of gay and lesbian people.) As more and more GLBT people live open lives, more and more people of faith will be placed in a position of deciding how they will respond.

PROMISE KEEPERS WATCH No. 1 Promise Keepers and Mainline Christian Denominations cont... Promise Keepers is led by right wing fundamentalists and evangelicals, whose superficial biblical training tends to be that of a literal and inerrant understanding of scripture. By contrast, most of the mainline denominations' pastors and teachers have been taught biblical criticism, and therefore understand that words written centuries ago to pertain to a specific cultural or political problem of that day are not necessarily prophecies related to the vastly changed circumstances of the 20th or 21st centuries. Promise Keepers is not like earlier revival meetings conducted by evangelists. It is an ongoing national organization that is building a disciplined loyal membership of men committed to an ideologically and theologically different agenda from that of the mainline denominations. Historically, although most mainline churches have had fairly well-organized women's societies from local church, district or regional levels up to their national offices, few if any denominations have had such an emphasis on men's ministries. The United Methodist Church, for example, has a national meeting of men every four years and men's organizations in some local churches and at other levels, but it has not been a major denominational emphasis. This has left them vulnerable to the "men's movement" recruitment strategy of Promise Keepers.
