Her health initially improved under his care, but she later suffered a relapse. Shortly afterwards, she fell on an icy sidewalk and severely injured herself. Some did not expect her to survive. On what she believed to be her deathbed, she read one of Jesus' healings. She suddenly realized that healing comes not from internal bodily processes, or from the power of a person's mind, but from the Divine Mind, God. She was instantly cured! Mrs. Eddy withdrew from society for three years in order to concentrate on a deep search through the Bible and discover precisely how her healing had taken place. She wished to share this knowledge with others, and to give them the tools to take away sin and achieve health. Mrs. Eddy then wrote her main book, Science and Health , later called Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures . The book has since been published in 17 languages, and is available in English Braille, on audio cassette, CD, and in software packages.

Such was clearly true of the Lord's people in the first century (Acts 11:26; 1 Pet.4:16; Eph. 1:22-23; Col. 1:18; Rom. 16:16). We refer to ourselves as the church of Christ, the Lord's church, or some other scriptural description, not in an attempt to be "sectarian," but on the contrary, to identify ourselves as the church belonging to Christ. Our Emphasis is Spiritual, Not Material or Social: We Strive To be The Same Church Described In the New Testament: It is our purpose to be completely identified with the Christians of the first century. We believe this to be possible to all who will learn, believe and be guided by the plain teaching of the word of God. Jesus declared such to be "the seed of the kingdom" (Lk. 8:11). A fundamental truth in nature is that a specific kind of seed, when planted, will always produce after its kind. The word of God when planted in the hearts of honest people, and obeyed will produce Christians - just as it did in the first century - nothing more and nothing less. We are human, and therefore subject to error, so we recognize the possibility that we may be wrong in our application of the scriptures. But if we can be shown where we are wrong - by the scriptures - we are willing and anxious to change.

With The Spirit and Understanding "What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the understanding also," (1 Corinthians 14:15). This passage is commonly used to impress the thought that we need, not just to sing the words, but to understand the words. Does God require that we mean what we are doing, to understand with our hearts what we are saying? Absolutely! This certainly is a part of what Jesus said to the Samaritan woman: "God is spirit and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and truth," (John 4:24). God has always required the heart of man. However, is that what Paul is saying in 1 Corinthians 14:15? First, note the context where Paul says that all things are to be done to edifying. Particularly, as it relates to a discussion of languages and prophesying, Paul argues the superiority of prophesying, because it edifies (vv. 2-5). How does one edify who speaks in a language unknown to the hearers, unless there is one to interpret the meaning of the language? If the gift of interpretation was not present, one was not supposed to speak in tongues in the assembly (vv. 27-28). In v. 14, Paul says, if I pray in a tongue, my spirit (Gr. word pneuma the spirit part of men inspired by H.S. which involves my comprehension) prays but my understanding is unfruitful. He means by "my understanding," not the comprehension I have of what I am saying but rather the understanding I seek to convey by my speech. His answer to that dilemma is first that he will pray and sing with the spirit. By "spirit" he means by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit the context indicates this, because prophecy and tongue speaking were done only by the power of the H.S. Though the translators have not capitalized "The Spirit," the definite article is present and it is commonly capitalized in other places to convey the thought of the Holy Spirit.
