46. West Richmond Church Of The Brethren - Another Way Of Living
For almost 300 years the church of the brethren has tried to do as Jesusdid. The church of the brethren welcomes you to another way of living.
http://www.globalweb.net/wrcob/reading.htm
Another Way of Living...
If you've fished all night
and caught nothing,
try another way. From the shore, Jesus looked across the water and saw that his friends had caught no fish. He called out, "Cast your nets on the other side of the boat." Then he went back to the fire, to the breakfast he was preparing. He knew that within moments, there would be plenty of fish to go around. For almost 300 years the Church of the Brethren has tried to do as Jesus did. To notice the need. To help. To welcome, and to share. To replace the night's emptiness with a new morning of abundance. Brethren believe there's enough to go around. And we try to help that happen. The Church of the Brethren welcomes you to another way of living. West Richmond Church of the Brethren

If you're fed up with doctrine
and still hungry,
try another way. When you're fully instructed by not fully satisfied where can you turn? For almost 300 years, we in the Church of the Brethren have found steady nourishment and guidance not in a set creed, but another way: Through open-minded consideration of Jesus, the scriptures, and our own hearts.

Peters Creek Church of the Brethren
One of the Valley's Oldest
Peters Creek Church of the Brethren built in 1845 Early in the 18th century Europe was torn by strife. In the Eder Valley, near Schwargenau, Germany in the spring of 1708, Alexander Mack along with seven others, began a movement which evolved into what is known today as "The Church of The Brethren". In 1719, Mack, with his numerous followers, fled from Europe to America. The colony which they established in Germantown, Pennsylvania was the beginning of the "Dunkards" in America. We must remember the people called "Dunkards". who first came to the area were clannish, German speaking and for many years held themselves apart from their neighbors. They were hard working, industrious people and as a whole, excellent farmers. They sought only enough land to supply their needs. They sought neither wealth nor social prestige. They were not interested in political office and certainly they were not desirous of any type of military honor. When the Shenandoah Valley was first settled the Germans heavily populated the upper portion.

Origins of the Church of the Brethren and Other Brethren Groups by Lois C. Byrem, Strasburg, Pennsylvania Groups which stem from the Schwarzenau Brethren, 1708 Many religious groups have the term "brethren" as part of their names. Most are not related to the events that took place in Schwarzenau (present day Germany), in 1708, and to the group called "the Schwarzenau Brethren." According to The Brethren Encyclopedia, there have been more than 35 groups which are identified as having evolved from the Schwarzenau Brethren. It is important to note that those that are listed below, all consider themselves to be the true heirs of the Schwarzenau Brethren. The Church of the Brethren (earlier called Fraternity of German Baptists, until 1907 they were known as the German Baptist Brethren). Membership about 155,000. Beginning in Pennsylvania in 1723. Considered "conservative" in the 1880s. It has a seminary and six colleges. Headquarters - Elgin, Illinois. Ephrata Community (German Seventh Day Baptists). Led by Conrad Beissel, it resulted in the first schism among the Brethren in 1728. In 1732, Beissel led his followers to the place where the Ephrata Cloister now stands. Membership about 100. Office: 9400 Anthony Highway, Waynesboro, PA 17268.

Who We Are
Continuing the Work of Jesus . . .
Though the Brethren as a group have existed for nearly three hundred years, we subscribe to no formal creed. We simply try to do what Jesus did. Jesus brought a message of life, love, and hope. But he offered much more than inspiring words: He understood that peoples spiritual needs also include day-to-day human ones - food, health, rest, comfort, friendship, and unconditional acceptance. I am the way, he told his followers. He showed them how to trust, how to care, and how to help. Steadily, lovingly, even radically, Jesus went about saving the world - by serving its people. Because we believe his message, we seek to do the same.
Peacefully.
Whether the conflict involves warring nations, racial discord, theological dispute, personal disagreement, or mere misunderstanding, Brethren listen conscientiously, seek guidance in the scriptures, and work toward reconciliation. We practice peaceful living. Our longstanding commitment to peace and justice includes a deep regard for human life and dignity. Brethren reach worldwide to help repair the ravages of poverty, ignorance, exploitation, and catastrophic events. Along with our faith, we bring food, books, classes, tools, and medicine.

They purchased land for themselves and took out options on property for their friends. Rev. A. B. Church of the Brethren resettlement staff members, Alex Kirculescu and Stan Noffsinger, serve newly arriving refugees at the Brethren Service Center in New Windsor, Maryland. The Church of the Brethren and its Emergency Response/Service Ministry has been involved with refugee ministries since World War II and has worked in partnership with Church World Service for many years. Photo: CWS/New Windsor The Church of the Brethren, a historic peace church, has long been involved in the ministry of refugee resettlement. It began by providing assistance to people left homeless by the devastation of World War II. In 1949, congressional action opened the way for large numbers of refugees to enter the United States. That same year the Church of the Brethren Annual Conference called on the churches to help resettle 1,000 families displaced by the war. Within a year, Church of the Brethren congregations had resettled 500 families and the goal of 1,000 was reached the following year. Since that time, the Church of the Brethren has been involved in the resettlement of refugees fleeing from brutal and oppressive conditions resulting from war and civil strife. Refugees have come from all over the world, representing the spectrum of racial, social, ethnic and religious diversity. Working closely with CWS, the Church of the Brethren has resettled refugees in congregations throughout the U.S.
