Climate Change and Christian Witness
Church of the Brethren Statement on Global Climate Change The threat to creation by global warming/climate change is a cause for concern for everyone on the planet, but for Christians the issue is more than a matter of self preservation; it is a matter of faithfulness. Throughout its history, the Church of the Brethren has been concerned with good stewardship of God's creation. We are increasingly aware of the interrelatedness of all life. We acknowledge that energy use is linked to the ecological crisis facing the Earth, the health consequences for us and future generations, and spiritual well-being in relation to other species and our Creator. Climate change is an issue of justice. The industrialized nations, representing less than 20 percent of the world's population, are responsible for 75 to 80 percent of the annual greenhouse gas emissions. Yet those who live in poor and developing countries will be most seriously affected by global warming. A major challenge facing humankind is an equitable standard of living for this and future generations: adequate food, water, energy, safe shelter and a healthy environment. Human-induced climate change, along with land degradation, loss of biological diversity, and stratospheric ozone depletion, threatens our ability to meet these basic human needs.

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30 Peak Creek Church of the Brethren , located in the mountains of Ashe County North Carolina, has served this area for well over 100 years proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ. The church building located on Peak Creek Church Road was erected between 1924 and 1926. The congregation at Peak Creek worships together in many other ways throughout the year. Revivals are also an important part of our year and they are welcomed as a time of renewal. We also share together in the "Love Feast" (twice a year) which reminds us of the Lord's Supper, when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, ate a simple meal with them, and shared the bread and cup. Peak Creek Church of the Brethren has many people who are musically gifted. On a given Sunday you might hear special music from "Rejoice" a group within our church who sing a mixture of southern gospel and contemporary music. Another Sunday you might get to hear hymns played by a fiddle, a hammered dulcimer, or an old-fashioned upright piano. Or you might simply want to join the uplifting voices of our congregational singing as we praise our Saviour in song.

http://www.reformedreader.org/history/cobhistory.htm
Brief History of the Church of the Brethren Eighteenth century Europe was a time of strong governmental control of the church and low tolerance for religious diversity. Nevertheless, there were religious dissenters who lived their faith in spite of the threat of persecution. Some of these dissenters found refuge in the town of Schwarzenau, Germany. Among them was Alexander Mack, a miller who had been influenced by both Pietism and Anabaptism. In August 1708 five men and three women gathered at the Eder River in Schwarzenau for baptism, an illegal act since all had been baptized as infants. They understood this baptism as an outward symbol of their new faith and as a commitment to living that faith in community. An anonymous member of the group first baptized Mack. He, in turn, baptized the other seven. This new group simply called themselves "brethren." Though the early Brethren shared many beliefs with other Protestants, issues which separated them from the state churches included discipleship and obedience, reinstitution of the New Testament church, church discipline, biblicism, and nonresistance. They also shared their faith enthusiastically with others, sending evangelists to other parts of Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Due to growing persecution and economic hardship, Brethren began emigrating to North America in 1719 under the leadership of Peter Becker. Most Brethren left Europe by 1740, including Mack, who brought a group over in 1729. The first congregation in the New World was organized at Germantown, Pa., in 1723. Soon after its formation, the Germantown congregation sent missionaries to rural areas around Philadelphia. These missionaries preached, baptized, and started new congregations.

http://www.womaenscaucus.org/
Womaen's Caucus is a network of feminist women and men who identify with the Church of the Brethren . Emboldened by our awareness of the violence and pain related to the denial of gender inequality, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we engage in the prophetic task of creating church which is free from attitudes and practices of injustice.
  • Womaen's Caucus was founded in 1973 by a group of about 50 women from the Church of the Brethren. Through the years, members of Caucus have energetically advocated for women's concerns and issues. Strong and centered, Caucus greets the future with confidence, certain of our call to bear witness to truth as we are led by the wisdom of the Spirit. The first steering committee selected the name Church of the Brethren Womaen's Caucus , the spelling of the word Womaen to reflect the common bond between each woman and all women. Caucus has empowered women to claim a leadership role in the denomination, and participate fully in the life of the church.

A 1992 History of Bible Helps
The ministry of Bible Helps began in 1950, when a group of concerned members of the Church of the Brethren, including G. Howard Danner, Samuel M. Lehigh, David W. Lehigh, and Amos Lehigh decided to make available a Bible-teaching, Gospel message from a conservative viewpoint, in printed form. The first publication consisted of several articles written by various contributors, and ensuing issues were sent out once a month. In 1950, about 1,000 pieces were printed, and the distribution was limited to a few states. This later evolved into a publication with one featured article in each issue, written by one writer, and was sent out every other month. Brother Harold S. Martin became involved, and did a large majority of the writing for Bible Helps. The growth of Bible Helps was largely effected by "word-of-mouth" advertising.
