What is a Congregationalist? We are Christians who deeply believe that our church must be self-governing. We church members are the church government, and collectively we determine how our church shall be organized, always conscious of our covenant with Christ. Our participation in councils or associations is always voluntary. The word "congregational" refers to the type of self-government within the church. As Congregationalists, we believe that our relationship with God is one that is deeply personal and private. We do not adhere to any creed, and we come from a myriad of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. We are free to pray and commune with God as we each see fit. No one tells us how to pray, or how to worship, however - our belief system is deeply rooted and built upon Biblical tradition and the teachings of Jesus Christ. LIBERTARIAN HERITAGE PURITAN CONGREGATIONALIST CHURCH CONSTITUTION and CONFESSION of FAITH First Edition 1982 Second Edition 1994 Third Edition 1997 Candlestick Publishing San Antonio, Texas ISBN 0-9627423-8-4 INTRODUCTION Freedom and religious liberty in the United States have their foundation in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and it's Bill of Rights, the values thereof being rooted in the Westminster Confession of Faith . In the final analyses, the only true source of freedom is faith in the One who said, "ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32). The only true source of freedom, therefore, is the King of the Jews, Jesus Christ. The Early Church believed (as the Scriptures teach) in the Second Coming of Christ, when He will establish His Kingdom on Earth, with His throne in Jerusalem, from where He will rule in peace (with His saints) for a thousand years. Today, we call this belief "Premillennialism"; that is, the doctrine that Christ's Second Coming occurs before the thousand-year period of peace on earth.

Congregationalist Churches Congregationalism really began on the Island with the appointment of Samuel Haining as Minister in 1808. They opened their first chapel in 1813 in Athol Street Douglas from whence the congregation, after what appears to be some form of split, moved to Finch Road in 1866 and also to another chapel in Circular Road; A small chapel was also built in Union Mills. Nightingale in his Lancashire Nonconformity , 1893, gives the most detailed history available concerning the Congregationalists. The Evangelical Magazine for November 1808 has the following: The Gazette 27-Feb-1817 quotes Miles Leah as new independent preacher at Castletown - this M. Leah would appear to have later joined the Primitive Methodists as he is reported to have ministered at their first camp meeting 3 June 1823 and to have opened a new chapel in Braddan in Aug 1824 (when described as Mr Leah from Ramsey). The Manx Advertiser 20 June 1822 reports the opening of an independent chapel at Peel - this would appear to have been in the one-time Barracks Cubbon quotes Evangelical Magazine, 1822 as referring to 'Homilies in the Manx language' being distributed among the people of the Isle of Man and that on 27 May 1822 was formed 'The Isle of Man Congregational Itinerant Society' designed to spread the Gospel by menas of preaching and of schools - it was also 'proposed to procure itinerants to preach in Manks'. Nothing seems to have come of this - the Congregationalists remained very much English based.

Fawaz Damra God is One found on page 27, by placing the shoe on the other foot, so to speak: Yet, if he were fair, the reviewer would entertain such questions as "What is it about the sayings of Jesus that inspires such sectarian hatred as found in the Irish Republican Army?" Or try this question: "What is it about the Christian political tradition that led dozens, if not hundreds, of state and federal officials, including governors and senators, not only in the American South, but also in the Midwest to embrace the Klan, thereby aiding and abetting it in the lynching of hundreds, if not thousands, of innocent civilians?" I, of course, would have prima facie objections to such questions. As a Congregationalist, I do not, and cannot, identify groups such as the IRA or the Klan as Christian. Most of us can easily see through the Christian trappings appropriated by such groups and recognize their usage of the Cross, for example, as a perversion of the faith. Rev. Steven Blackburn, Ph.D.

First Since 1961 Finnish Church Elects Congregational Minister The Finnish Congregational Church of South Thomaston, Maine, has fulfilled a symbolic 93-year cycle in its history. On September 10, Rev. Terence Willis , Pastor Emeritus of the Payson Park Congregational Church in Belmont, Massachusetts, was officially elected to preach at the bi-weekly worship services of the local church. Therefore, Rev. Willis becomes the first pastor from the Congregational persuasion to serve this former Mission Station, since the death of the last of a long line of Finnish Congregational ministers in 1961. The tiny church had been served from 1961 to 1995 by various lay pastors of other denominations, with occasional visiting Finnish clergy of Lutheran and Congregational persuasions. The past five years witnessed a devoted ministry by Duane Pease , a lay pastor from the nearby South Hope Community Church. Rev. Willis and his wife Vera, are both originally from Plymouth, England. They bring a long history of dedicated Christian ministry to their new home in coastal Maine. He received his theological education at New College, London University, and was ordained in 1967 at the United Reform Christ Church in Rayleigh, England. They served the parish there until 1980, when they accepted the call to preach in America, at the historic Payson Park Congregational Church in Belmont, Massachusetts. Recently retired after a successful 19-year-ministry there, the couple decided to become permanent residents of St. George, Maine. This coastal community had been their favorite vacation spot for many years.
