Denominational Affiliations of the Framers of the Constitution Dr. Miles Bradford of the University of Dallas did a study on the denominational classifications that the delegates to the Constitutional Convention accepted for themselves. New England and the Unitarian Church Check out the inside of this church steeple! . . . Bedford, Massachusetts was founded around 1730. In the New England colonies, incorporating a town was based on the English laws binding church and state. To form a town you had to have enough people within an area that all wanted to establish their own church and commons. There had to be a practical hardship (such as being too far away from the current church) and an economic viability (enough money and labor to establish the church and the commons, and of course to pay taxes to the King!). Beyond that, the governing British tried to stay out of it. This picture shows the Bedford Commons in the town center. Want to take a climb up into the bell tower? Unlike the top-down hierarchy of the Church of England, Congregationalists believed in the congregation's autonomy. The first church was smaller than this, and it blew down in the Great Gale in the early 1800's, and then it was rebuilt like this.

Wales Contents Welsh Periodicals The "bible" on this subject is by Dr Huw Walters , called Llyfryddiaeth Cylchgronau Cymreig (A Bibliography of Welsh Periodicals 1735 - 1850) NLW, 1993 . This contains detailed descriptions of the 195 titles which were published within that period, including lists of editors, publishers, printers, place of publication, place of printing etc. In 1987 the conference of the Research Society for Victorian Periodicals was held at the NLW and the opportunity was taken to stage an exhibition on the Welsh Periodical Press 1735-1900. A 47 page booklet was produced to describe the exhibition . Both books are still available for purchase from the NLW. Huw Walters has provided this introductory commentary below about the main book and his ongoing work on extending the period covered to 1900; "Welsh periodicals contain a wealth of information on all aspects of nineteenth century life. In fact, the Welsh denominational monthlies were the main sources for both local and national news before the tax on advertisements and the stamp duty on newspaper copies were abolished in 1853 and 1855. The majority of the periodicals listed in the *Bibliography* were denominational and had a tremendous influence on Welsh religious and political life. *Y Diwygiwr* published by David Rees at Llanelli was regarded as one of the most radical and influential publications of the century.

Why was it that emotions were so inflamed that many Old Schoolers found desirable a remedy as drastic as excising a significant portion of the church? In some quarters, the anger was so deep that it continued to smolder even years after the division. As late as 1855, one Old School partisan still contended that "the palpable perversions of religious truth" in the New School would have, if unchecked, "prove[d] the programme to an age of infidelity, and introduce[d] upon the American stage the shocking theological panorama of universal derangement and confusion in the elements of the moral world; as a parallel to which we may point only to the reign of terror and triumph of ungodliness in the French Revolution.
