Six African members of the Congregation for the Evengelization of Peoples convened a meeting to discuss how African bishops could organise themselves to respond to the Council. A real need for African bishops to meet together has been indentified and deemed necessary. Afrer the Council, the Symposium of the Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) was inaugurated on the occasion of the first pastoral visit of Pope Paul VI to Uganda (the first ever by a Pope), in 1969. That visit gave SECAM its orientation and agenda for the future when he told the African bishops: "You may and you must have an African Christianity" (AAS, 1969). SECAM has a Standing Committee composed of the President, two vice-presidents and a member from each of the nine Regional Associations of Episcopal Conferences.

(Updated 3/24/03) PRAY FOR PEACE
In January, a group of parishioners travelled to Washington, D.C. to express their hope for peace. There will be a variety of ways to express that hope here in Baltimore. In Redeemer's chapel, a peace candle will be burning 24/7 and a peace chapel will be set up for personal refelection and prayers. If you know someone who is in the military, please contact us with their name. We continue to pray for the safety of all those in our armed forces. Prayers for Peace in a Time of War, each week day at noon in the chapel. FINDING LOVE IN THE DESERT
-The Rev. Linda L. Kerr
The desert of Lent possesses a daunting landscape. As we enter the desert, stripped of the usual embellishments and distractions, we struggle to adjust to the seemingly barren terrain. It is so much easier to bypass the desert, continuing to fill time. Learning how to empty time is both the lesson and the gift of Lent. Like journeys of other kinds, the desert journey demands the discipline of packing light. Without so many 'things," immediate gratification is stalled, if only for a few precious moments. The very barrenness of the landscape invites us to see and hear what is less obvious - the conservation of the heart, the divine whisper within the soul, the intricate and interlocking beauty of creation.

The Mission and Purpose of the Church
The Mission of the African Methodist Episcopal Church is to minister
to the spiritual, intellectual, physical, and emotional, and environmental
needs of all people by spreading Christ's liberating gospel through
word and deed. At every level of the Connection and in every local church, the African Methodist Episcopal Church shall engage in carrying out the spirit of the original Free African Society, out of which the A.M.E. Church evolved: that is, to seek out and save the lost, and serve the needy through a continuing program of : (1) preaching the gospel, (2) feeding the hungry, (3) clothing the naked, (4) housing the homeless, (5) cheering the fallen
