Exclusive Brethren Information
This site is a collection of information about the Exclusive Brethren, specifically the Taylor - Symington - Hales branch currently led by Bruce D. Hales of Australia. These brethren are a world-wide evangelical Christian sect with roots in the ministry of John Nelson Darby . Besides the Taylor/Symington/Hales brethren there are many other gatherings who adhere to the basic premises of Exclusive Brethrenism. There is some information here about those other Exclusive Brethren gatherings. This site is in no way sponsored or approved by the brethen described here, though they are aware of the existence of the site. Be advised that entries you make in the guest book or articles you submit for posting may be read by these brethren. This World Wide Web site serves multiple purposes.

Exclusive Brethren (1/2)
Often referred to mistakenly as 'Plymouth Brethren', the Exclusive Brethren is in fact an extremist offshoot of the former. Founded in 1825 by a clergyman dissenter called John Nelson Derby, the Plymouth Brethren always had strongly predeterminist views - it was the duty of God's chosen to avoid all contact with the ungodly. Friendship, business or even eating with those outside the Brethren was forbidden. The founders of Exclusive Brethren believed that this isolationism should not be compromised in any way - today's members are not allowed television, radio, newspapers, fax machines or computers. They do not vote, join unions, take civil office or allow their children to take part in sports or social activities at school. Men wear jacket and tie; women must have long hair, modest clothes and no make-up. Sunday worship begins at 6am in Brethren Meeting Rooms (which have blocked-out windows) and goes on all day.

The first time I signed this guest book was back on November 24th 1997 - the day I discovered this wonderful website, I was so excited. Since then the site has developed and expanded exponentially. It serves so many purposes - for example, through it I have met many wonderful people. Reading through the guest book entries and all the other various contributions it seems to me that each of us is seeking our own pathway to freedom and I find each story fascinating, reflecting as it does the great diversity and individuality of human kind. Many have continued with their christian beliefs, some joining mainstream churches, others linking up with other brethren groups - many have also decided that christianity is not for them and I would suspect that there are also many who have not yet decided. I remember sitting on that particular fence for many years, it seemed too difficult and too scary to even contemplate thinking about getting off. When people asked of me 'Are you still the Lords', I found the question irritating or intrusive and not at all an invitation to leave my perch.

EXCLUSIVE BRETHREN
The Exclusive Brethren is an extremist offshoot of the Plymouth Brethren. Founded in 1825 by John Nelson Derby, the Plymouth Brethren always had strong views about avoiding contact with outsiders. The Exclusive Brethren believe this isolationism should not be compromised in any way. Today's members are not allowed television, radio, magazines, newspapers, computers or any other modern communication method. Even eating with a non-member is seen as evil association. The Exclusive Brethren do not vote, stand for public office or join unions. They reject life insurance, university education or military service. They do not permit their children to take part in sports or social activities at school or have contact with children outside the group. Pets are forbidden as idolatry. Men wear coat and tie to all meetings and women must have long hair with a head covering, modest clothing and no make-up. Their Sunday meeting commences at 6 am and goes all day. There are shorter meetings each night of the week. The Brethren Meeting Rooms have blocked out windows and meetings are not open to strangers. Members are not allowed to communicate with relatives who have left the movement and only cursory communication is permitted with relatives outside the movement if it is absolutely necessary.

http://www.caic.org.au/biblebase/brethren/taylor exc breth.htm
Taylorite Exclusive Brethren The correspondence on this subject during August and September 1999 has only recently been drawn to my attention. Eryl Davies’ original article drew partly on information gleaned from an account written by me, and published on a website. I was specially intrigued by the reply signed by three Taylorite Exclusive Brethren printed in Evangelical Times in August 1999. Computer trouble I left the Exclusive Brethren ten years ago and know all three of the respondents. My reason for leaving was simply that it seemed hypocritical to me to publicly denounce the use of computers, while at the same time privately condoning their use for running their own organisation. At the time that I left the organisation, virtually all UK members of the sect had to sign a form once a year, agreeing to their details being held on a computer database (the Exclusive Brethren called it an ‘Addressing System’). This consent was needed to satisfy the requirements of the Data Protection Act. But we were also urged to approach schools attended by our children to witness to the wickedness of computers! Their justification for this contradiction between what we did and what we said was that ‘worldly people’ would not understand the ‘special’ use of the computer for the ‘Lord’s work’ at the Brethren publishing house. Their attempts to justify this attitude helped me make up my own mind as to the deceit involved. They cited one of their leaders, James Taylor Jr, to the effect that when approaching members of a government to obtain a sympathetic hearing, you ‘wouldn’t tell them that you didn’t vote’. Exclusive Brethren never vote, but are happy to carry out vigorous lobbying of government representatives. Such economy with the truth seemed to me to be deceitful.

Notes by Peter J Blackburn Understanding Exclusive Brethren The Exclusive Brethren are a breakaway from the Plymouth Brethren, a group which originated in Dublin, but formed its first congregation in Plymouth in 1831. The origins of the Plymouth Brethren were essentially informal, with a desire to return to the simplicity of apostolic days and worship, and to break down the walls that divided Christians. Edward Cronin, a medical student at Trinity College, Dublin, withdrew from church attendance for a time because he was refused Communion unless he entered into membership with one of the dissenting churches. This he regarded as a denial that "the church of God was one, and that all that believers were members of that one Body." Joined by a small group of like-minded persons, he met with them "for breaking of bread and prayer" in a private house. The character of the meetings created great interest and many more attended to inquire further and learn from Scripture. As numbers grew, a room was hired to accommodate the people. John Nelson Darby was the outstanding teacher. Meetings showed a deep devotion to Christ and a zeal for evangelism. A.N. Groves, another leader, became concerned at the dominance of Darby and warned him against strengthening the very elements of legalism from which they had withdrawn, but Darby did not heed his words. Darby pressed for division, and those who followed him broke off all relations with those who agreed with Bethesda. From 1848 the Brethren became two distinct groups, the mainstream of the movement (Open Brethren) maintaining its original principles, while the Darbyist group (Exclusive Brethren) became increasingly centralised in government and separatist in relation to other Christians.

EXCLUSIVE BRETHREN LEADER DEAD In our March/April 1996 TACL we reported, in good faith - based on a number of different reports, the death of John Hales , the world leader of the Exclusive Brethren We were rather premature on that occasion, and published an acknowledgment of our error in the May/June issue of TACL that year. In spite of serious ill-health at the time, John Hales rallied and managed to live quite a deal longer than apparent expectations. His son also had to wait a bit longer to take over as the ‘Elect Vessel’ This time we haven’t made a mistake! John Stephen Hales JSH ), considered the ‘Elect Vessel’, the ‘universal leader’, the ‘Man of God’, ‘the embodiment of the Holy Spirit’ of the Taylorite Exclusive Brethren, died in Sydney, New South Wales (Australia), early on Saturday evening, the 12th of January, 2002. He was buried on Tuesday, the 15th of January. His wife, Helen Dietrich, died about a month earlier. Three Hales’ sons and one daughter survive their parents.
