What made things entirely different was the fact our family was part of theexclusive brethren cult. Even the exclusive brethren!' I realized.

Tim Twinam Back to Testimonies Page A Date with Destiny, not with Mary ... I suppose I had an unusual upbringing! For a start it was in England ... and then every two years, another sister arrived until I had managed to collect five of them. What made things entirely different was the fact our family was part of the Exclusive Brethren cult. The EB's started off historically as a bible-based non-demoninational gathering in the early 1820's in Ireland. After a while the first large assembly was held in Plymouth, England and this gained them the early label of Plymouth Brethren. Over the course of time, there were a number of divisions among them and the most extremist group became known as the Exclusive Brethren or the 'Frozen Chosen'! Some parts of the upbringing were excellent, in that the Bible was read daily and ours was a God-fearing household. However, to me they were only words and I couldn't wait to break loose and actually eat and play with other non-Brethren kids. I felt trapped in a sub-society whose favorite word seemed to be "Don't!". I eventually had my wish and in my late teens, I was free to do whatever I wanted following managing to become excommunicated from the cult. In their view I was now damned, so what did I have to lose now? I started dating and began to explore a wider world.

Julia Llewellyn Smith meets a couple whose family was destroyed by their 'terrifying' church elders The Sunday Telegraph (England), Mar. 16, 2003 http://infobrix.yellowbrix.com/ Christine and Andrew Wallach's world changed forever early one Sunday morning in 1994 when their two teenage sons staggered home the worse for drink. Many families would have laughed it off, but as members of a secretive Christian sect the Exclusive Brethren , the Wallachs, from Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, were terrified. By visiting a snooker hall, the boys had "transgressed" and the whole family would be punished for it. Two days later, the Wallachs were officially "shut up" -

The Brethren, founded in the 19th century, cut themselves off from outsiders to the extent of refusing even to eat with them. But the new leader, an Australian called Bruce Hales, may be about to change all that. A BBC Everyman film about the sect on Tuesday interviews local leaders for the first time. They admit to making mistakes and taking "hasty" decisions in splitting British families when members wished to leave the sect. The film's producer, Nick Gray, was surprised to be offered an opportunity to speak to senior members of the Brethren. But they still accused him of bringing the devil with him.

Mr. Straw: That is true. However, we end up being judicially reviewed more regularly than some other Departments because of the nature of our business. It is right that we should be reviewed more regularly, as we are daily dealing with crucial issues of the liberty of the subject. I personally have no difficulty about the fact that the quasi-judicial decisions that I have to makelike the decisions that the former Attorney-General had to makehave to be made with very clear application of the law and judicial review. Judicial review and many other remedies have been developed, and the Government believe that the courts will be imaginative in developing other remedies if they are needed. Ifas I do not think will happenthere turns out to be some gap in the remedies, the safeguard is that it will be possible for litigants to go to Strasbourg, where article 13 will arise. It picks up the concerns about which they spoke with great eloquence and deep sensitivity when referring to the Exclusive Brethren. I am choosing my words carefully so that I do not breach parliamentary convention, but I am aware that members of the Exclusive Brethren continue to take a close interest in our proceedings. Whatever view one may take of such matters, members of the Committee want to be as sensitive as possible to persons of conscience. The amendment would exclude employers from the obligation to participate in the ballot when they had particular reasons of conscience for doing so. If that were to happen, the exclusions would need to be tightly secured.

Independent Fundamentalist Family
Churches in this family flowed from the work of John Nelson Darby (1800-1882). He was an Anglican priest who came to reject the idea of a state church and sought an approach to faith that would be non-denominational. The movement he began in England in the 1820s attempted a more complete revival of early Christianity than either the Puritan or Wesleyan movements, which had come earlier. This new movement sought to literally recreate the Apostolic church through intense focus on the Bible. Darby’s key theological concept was “dispensationalism.” From his work came modern fundamentalism. Dispensationalism sees the Bible as a history of God's dealing with humanity in terms of various periods (dispensations) of history. There are different characteristics of the various periods and subdivisions, with different themes and issues apparent at different times. Based on this theory, the true church was seen as a faithful subgroup. Anyone who would foster a particular denomination was seen as acting contrary to the action of the Holy Spirit. Darby established assemblies of like-minded believers. They accepted no authority except the "charismatic" leadership of Darby.

Nee's Doctrine
Nee was clearly influenced by the Plymouth Brethren and the Keswick, or "victorious life," form of teaching. He also read and admired Hudson Taylor, George Meuller, and Madam Guyon. These influences are evident from the time of "The Spiritual Man" (1923) up until "The Normal Christian Life."53 The appeal of his preaching, according to Kinnear's sources, was "his gift of making so plain the way to God that relies solely upon Christ's finished work. All too many Christians were striving after a salvation based on good works."54 Late in his career, Nee is said to have developed some doctrinal aberrations that went beyond his usual purism. These areas had to do with a heavy emphasis on authority and submission, and an increasing tendency to dichotomize the material and the spiritual, or the ideal and the real. Some of the literature published during the past ten years claiming to originate from the last 5 years of Nee's ministry are definitely deserving of criticism at many points.55 However, care must be exercised here because of an unusual feature in his writings. Only two books actually written by Nee's own hand are available in English. These are Concerning Our Missions, and The Spiritual Man. Ironically, Nee criticized both of these works.56 His other works are translated from notes taken from his lectures, and are therefore open to interpretive additions by the translators.57

If troubles arose in the outer world, they were regarded as the beginning of the fulfilment of the prophecies in Daniel, Matthew and Revelation. But it was understood implicitly that England was specially favoured by God on account of the breach with Rome. The child, who, at this period, was called by the dreadful name Alick, supposed it to be a law of nature that Queen Victoria would never die and that consols would never go below par. With regard to the question of salvation, by the way, the theory of the exclusive Plymouth Brethren was peculiar, and somewhat trying to a logical mind. They held predestination as rigidly as Calvin, yet this nowise interfered with complete freewill. The crux was faith in Christ, apparently more or less intellectual, but, since "the devils also believe and tremble", it had to be supplemented by a voluntary acceptance of Christ as one's personal saviour. This being so, the question arose whether Roman Catholics, Anglicans or even Nonconformists could possibly be saved. The general feeling seems to have been that it was impossible for anyone who was once actually saved to be lost, whatever he did . But it was, of course, beyond human power to determine whether any given individual had or had not found salvation. This, however, was clear: that any teaching or acceptance of false

The argument is considered in relation to the formation of Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Taoism.

The article maps out the development of the Electronic Church form the first EC broadcast in 1912 to the Bakker scandal in the late 80's, under the headings: Definition, History, Theology, Electronic Church and Politics, the Electronic Church around the world, present and future of the Electronic Church. The intention of the article is to introduce the reader to the world of the EC and provide him or her with the basic facts of its development.
