"Plymouth Brethren" FAQ
Author: Shawn Abigail
October 2001
Version 1.9 This Frequently Asked Questions list (FAQ) concentrates on the so called "Open Brethren" since this is the background of the author. However, an attempt is made to explain some of the positions of "Closed and Exclusive Brethren". This FAQ should not in any way be considered to be an authoritative document representing the view of any local church or any individual (including the author). At almost every point in this FAQ, you will find Brethren churches that will disagree or differ. Variation is even greater between different countries. The author could probably best be described as from the traditional end of the open Brethren in North America. Suggestions and corrections should be emailed to: Shawn Abigail This FAQ now has an official home page! You can see it at: Quite a number of brothers have sent me email with suggestions and additions. I would like to thank all who have helped build this FAQ.

"Plymouth Brethren" History FAQ
Version 0.2
September 1997
This work is under construction, and comments are invited.
Here is a FAQ on the history of that movement sometimes referred to as the "Plymouth Brethren". That title is rejected by most of the Christians within these assemblies, but is commonly applied to them. The questions appear in the left column, while the answers appear in the right column. Also in the right column is my analysis of the historical facts. This analysis appears in Italics.
Why do you mention so many splits?
The first reason is that it is a sad historical fact. While the "Plymouth Brethren" have given a great deal to evangelical Christianity, they have suffered many splits, particularly in the "Exclusive Meetings". The second reason is more subtle - it is easier to discuss splits than broad changes of direction. Just as secular historians find it easier to discuss and find original source material on wars, it is easier to discuss and find original source material on splits than on the development of evangelistic techniques, missions work, etc.
Where and when did the "Plymouth Brethren" start?

    I. History:
    1. Foundation; Record till 1845.
The Plymouth Brethren, called by others Darbyites or Exclusive Brethren, and by themselves "Brethren," are to be distinguished from Bible Christians and Disciples of Christ (qq.v.). They took their origin in Ireland about 1828 after a movement under the leadership of John Walker which was a revolt against ministerial ordination, and in England the origin is connected with the interest in prophecy stimulated by Edward Irving (q.v.). Conferences like those under the Irving movement were held from 1828 at Powerscourt Mansion, County Wicklow, Ireland, at which John Nelson Darby (q.v.) was a prominent figure. Prior to this, from 1826 private meetings had been held on Sundays under the leadership of Edward Cronin, who had been a Roman Catholic and later a Congregationalist, for "breaking bread," at which Anthony Norris Groves, John Vesey Parnell (second Lord Congleton), and John Gifford Bellett, a friend of Darby, were attendants. In 1827 John Darby resigned his charge and in 1828 adopted the non-conformist attitude of the men named above, prompted by the Erastianism of a petition of Archbishop Magee to the House of Commons, and issued a paper on

Fellowship Extremes by Jerry C. Dyer Gospel Advocate
    Mar 2002
Subscribe to Gospel Advocate G od is very clear that His children must avoid extremes. Scripture instructs us to shun the extremes on the right or the left (Deuteronomy 5:32-33; Joshua 1:7-8; Proverbs 4:27; Ecclesiastes 7:18). As there were ancient extremes among God's people, there are extremes in our fellowship today referred to as inclusive and exclusive brethren. When the word "inclusive" is used, it refers to those willing to include individuals into their spiritual fellowship, those who have not responded in loving, faithful obedience to God's plan of reconciliation. Our purpose is not to ascribe impure motives to those who include people in fellowship that God will not or does not fellowship. When talking to these brethren who want to be inclusive, one gets the impression that some have very tender hearts and do not want (in their words) to draw a line between us and others who love the Lord just because they have not been baptized. A serious problem arises when one takes the position of an inclusive. John discussed this in 2 John 9-10: "Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take him into your house or welcome him" (niv).

    The Plymouth Brethren
The following page includes three papers written by Miles J. Stanford on the subject of the Plymouth Brethren (PBs)both the Open and Closed varieties. The Plymouth Brethren (often known throughout the world as Assemblies or Gospel Halls) are a small groups of Christians with a deep and rich history. The PBs should not be confused with any "Brethren" out of the Continental Free Church tradition, (such as the Church of the Brethren, Brethren Church, etc.), nor the Arminian Pentecostal Assemblies of God. For decades, the PBs reached out with their various needs to brother Miles Stanford by telephone and letter, yet often in pride and denial that they could be helped or ministered to by someone "outside" their Assembly system. However, it is often only an outsider who is in a position to evaluated conditions as they truly are, rather than how insiders represent them to be. Miles' burden was always that the PBs would discover the rich legacy of Pauline Dispensationalism established by the original founders of the movement. The green titles above and below are links to specific articles.

    Chapter Three
From Brutal Beatings to Brutal Addiction My childhood was difficult, painful and lonely. My grandmother, who used to baby-sit me when I was very small, once told me that she had a heck of a time changing my diapers because my father was beating me black and blue. Nobody ever did anything to stop my father, not until he nearly killed me when I was about fourteen. See, my dad weighed about 400 pounds and was pretty intimidating. The rules My parents belonged to a religious sect, The Exclusive Brethren, which is an arm of the Plymouth Brethren. Brethren rules said the father of the family was in charge and must be obeyed. My father took it to the extreme. Brethren have many rules. I made a list of the ones I know about:
    • No praying with anyone but Brethren members No television, radio or movies No eating with anyone but Brethren people (Even if they are family members) No education past high school Attend prayers meetings five nights a week, once on Saturday and church twice on Sunday Women are not to work outside the home Women are not to cut their hair or wear makeup Women are not to wear jeans or slacks of any kind Brethren members could not have life insurance Women must be submissive to their husbands Only men preach in church, only men ask questions

    Biography:
John Nelson Darby For the simplest believer the principle is still as clear as at the beginning. Like the man born blind in John 9.35-38, he comes out from all false systems, though many true saints are still there, and approaches the True Center, bows the knee and worships. He does not look round to see how many or how few are gathered with him. His eyes and heart are towards his Lord, Who gave him sight and salvation. W.R. Dronsfeld.

In 1838 Darby went to reside in French Switzerland, and made many disciples. Congregations were formed in Geneva, at Lausanne, where most of the Methodist and other dissenters joined the Brethren, at Vevey and elsewhere in Vaud. His opinions also found their way into France, Germany, German Switzerland, and Italy; but French Switzerland has always remained the stronghold of Plymouthism on the Continent, and for his followers there Darby wrote two of his most important tracts, Le Ministere considere dans sa nature and De la Presence et de faction du S. Esprit dans I'eglise. The revolution in the canton Vaud, brought about by Jesuit intrigue in 1845, brought persecution to the Brethren in the canton and in other parts of French Switzerland, and Darby's life was in great jeopardy. important division ‘among the Exclusives came to a crisis in 1881, when William Kelly and Darby became the recognized leaders of two sections who separated on a point of discipline. This was followed (1885) by the disruption of the strict Darbyite section, two communions being formed out of it upon points of doctrine. The movement has a distinct interest for students of church history: (1) as illustrating again the desire of certain Christians to pass over the garnered experience of the centuries,~and by going straight to the Bible to make a fresh start without any other authority, precedent or guidance; (2) in its development alongside the Evangelical, T~actarian and Broad Church movements of the 19th €ent.rry and its affinities with them all,. A certain haphazardism that has always marked the Brethren is responsible for the present lack of qualified leaders. The early enthusiasm has waned, and no provision was made for proper theological study.
