P.D.Ouspensky (1878-1947) was born in Moscow. His books TERTIUM ORGANUM (written 1912) and A NEW MODEL OF THE UNIVERSE (written 1914) revealed his stature as a thinker and his deep preoccupation with the problems of man's existence. His meeting with George Gurdjieff in 1915 marked a turning point in his life, and his interest from this time centered on the practical study of methods for development of consciousness in man. It is to this study that IN SEARCH OF THE MIRACULOUS and THE FOURTH WAY refer. Humanity, Gurdjieff realized, had entered a precarious new period in its evolution. The world would be destroyed, Gurdjieff warned, unless the 'wisdom' of the East and the 'energy' of the West were harnessed and used harmoniously. To effect this Harnelmiatznel, Gurdjieff gave the necessary shock: he introduced to the West a unique and powerful esoteric teaching of self-transformation. Gurdjieff called it the Fourth Way

But everyone must realize that this is his own task and not expect others to do it for him. The proper performance of this task by each of you will show first, that you have already assimilated something, understood something, and second, that you are able to appraise people, to understand with whom it is worth while talking and with whom it is not worth while, because the majority of people cannot take in any of these ideas and it is perfectly useless to talk to them. But at the same time there are people who are able to take in these ideas and with whom it is worth while talking." The next meeting after this was very interesting. Everyone was full of impressions of talks with friends; everyone had a great many questions; everyone was somewhat discouraged and disappointed.

The Fourth Way
" One must do everything one can and then say 'God have Mercy!' " G. I. Gurdjieff The idea of the fourth way is strongly associated with Gurdjieff, who appears to have been the first to use this phrase. The bulk of his discussion of this idea is to be found in Ouspensky's record of his teaching in Russia, In Search of the Miraculous . In his own writings, the idea is implicit but never mentioned as such (this is similar to his teaching on the enneagram). In Russia, he referred to three traditional ways:
  • Way of the Fakir, involving effort in the body
  • Way of the Monk, involving devotion and concentration of feeling
  • Way of the Yogi, involving largely mental attention. In the fourth way, effort is made in all three: body, feeling and mind. This is harmonious development, as in Gurdjieff's Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man. To some degree, his series of movements or 'sacred gymnastics' epitomised this approach (in the learning of them rather than their performance). His inner exercises, insofar as these are reported, usually involved an act of mental concentration combined with physical effort; the feelings are also involved but spontaneously in the 'I am' state. As with the other ways, the fourth requires its own kind of social organisation. How this has been interpreted has varied from group to group. However, in contrast with the traditional ways, the fourth does not require separation from conditions of ordinary life. Indeed, Gurdjieff often indicated that these conditions were ideal, especially in times of turmoil, for the 'awakening' process that he so strongly advocated and which is integral to the effectiveness of the fourth way. At the same time, work with others of like mind is essential.
  • 54. Intentional Observation - Practical Exercises - Kesdjan.com
Extracts from 'The fourth way' pages 43 and 54.
    http://kesdjan.com/exercises/io.html
Intentional Observation from Ouspensky's "The Fourth Way," pp. 43 &54 Q. Does one acquire knowledge of oneself through self-observation? A. Self-observation is connected with certain definite practices. If you just start observing how things happen, you will miss many things; but if you try to struggle against some of the things you see, for instance against small habits, you will at once begin to see many things which ordinarily you do not notice. Everyone has many small habits: habits of walking, habits of moving their hands, habits of sitting, standing, speaking in a certain way. This struggle is not for any particular results but merely for self-observation. Perhaps later you will find that you have to get rid of certain habits, but at present this struggle should be merely for self-study. Another useless function is talk; we talk too much. We talk and talk and talk, and we never really notice it. Generally we think we talk very little, much too little, but particularly those people who talk most think that they never talk. This is a very useful subject for watching. You will see how your day passes, how many mechanical things you say in certain conditions, how many other mechanical things in other conditions. Or you will notice that you just talk and talk because it gives you pleasure, or fills your time. It is necessary to watch it and stop at least some of this unnecessary talk. Talk, imagination, lying and expressing negative emotions are in fact our chief functions.

HOME The Enneagram The Nine Types of the Enneagram Breakthrough ... PRESS ROOM Diagnosis and Prescription:
The Enneagram and The Fourth Way
By Kathy Hurley and Theodorre Donson I f your interest in the Enneagram is how it can improve your life, we believe there is much evidence to commend linking it with elements of Fourth Way spirituality. Briefly, the term "Fourth Way" refers to a process by which the most mundane events of ordinary life are used consciously to unfold our life’s meaning. (We will explore this system more fully in the next two sections of this article.) We the authors have combined the Enneagram, elements of The Fourth Way, and principles of the spiritual life that we have gleaned through the years to create a strategy for healing the human soul that we have found effective both in our personal lives and in our writing and teaching. In the early 1980s, a friend introduced us to the writings of Maurice Nicoll and through him to the ideas of George Gurdjieff and Pietr Ouspensky and their concept of Fourth Way spirituality. We were immediately attracted to Nicoll because his ideas seemed to hold the promise of healing, which has been our lifelong interest. We have found Nicoll’s Fourth Way teachings to be an essential addition to our Enneagram studies because the Enneagram only provides a diagnosis of our condition. By itself, it only describes our current condition, generally by highlighting what is wrong with us. Diagnosis by itself is both frightening and dangerous. If your doctor tells you that you have a serious illness but does not tell you what the cure is, you enter a state of fear that easily slides into hopelessness. The case is similar with the Enneagram. If studied by itself, the Enneagram is not only incomplete but can even mislead people into believing that there is nothing they can do about the compulsive personality traits and motivations that it describes. You need something else to show the way out of your predicament. That’s where The Fourth Way becomes invaluable.

    56. Imagine Yourself Conscious
    Extract from 'The fourth way.'
    http://kesdjan.com/exercises/iyc.html
Imagine Yourself Conscious from Ouspensky's "Fourth Way," p. 113 Q. I still do not see what it means to try and think as we would think if we were more conscious. A [Ouspensky]. Try to imagine yourself consciousthat would be the right use of imagination. We develop this power of imagination in an absolutely wrong and useless way which is always making trouble for us. But now, for once, try to use it and imagine yourself conscious. Try to think how you would act, think, speak and so on.

Our Fourth Way books are by Dr Philip Groves. He has been teaching students in Sydney for the past 30 years - those studying wholistic medicine and also those searching for Greater Truth. The underlying theme of this work is guiding people to realise the abundance of their life, leading to the unfoldment of potential in life skills, creative expression and greater knowledge and understanding of the world we live in. These higher goals are explored by the use of practical application and real methodology which require time and effort or 'work' to find the beginnings of fruition. Esoteric Christianity is the basis and fundamental doctrine of this Teaching although the works of Emanuel Swedenborg and Gurdjieff are frequently drawn upon. Dr Groves taught at Nature Care College as their senior lecturer for many years. He has a Ph.D in Biochemistry, a doctorate in Bio-Psychology and a Diploma of Naturopathy; he has practised as a psycho-therapist for many years, while also working in Industry as a microbiologist and chemist. In addition to this his fields of specialised interest and deep understanding extend to Egyptology, Comparative Religion (in particular Buddhism and Sufism), Botany and Biology. FOURTH WAY material: Author of this site "The (person who has succeeded in this Workthe Fourth Way)... will "remember himself"... for him consciousness will not be dependent on special associations, but will be that which accompanies them always, fasting or drinking wine, alone or in a crowd, laboring or meditating. It will be that which... lights up all that happens." Rodney Collin "What is the first characteristic of self-remembering? In this state (the individual person) is not the center. He or she is not 'separate'. Sitting in a room... they are aware of the WHOLE ROOM, of themself as only one of the objects in it. They are likewise aware of others and do not put themself above others, or criticize or judge. This is not love but is the beginning of love. In this state a person has no 'self' as they usually are aware of it. It is quite impossible for them to consider or become negative, for they moment they do, the state will vanish." George Gurdjieff "A student must search out and select the 'Teacher', as much as the teaching individual must discern and 'accept' who they feel is a capable and valuable 'Student'. Be aware not just of what you seek; be equally as curious as to what you offer. Do you have within what deserves a Teacher's time, attention, and giving... from the fountain of this historical, sacred, and great Work?"

    Glossary of Fourth Way terms
The Fourth Way system has its own special language which may seem unusual to outsiders. This glossary is meant to help those of you who are not already familiar with these terms. being: A term roughly equivilant to "experience", "understanding", or "wisdom". The Fourth Way system tends to view knowledge as matter, and therefore different "levels of being" are associated with different physiological states; ie, a person with a higher level of being is considered to have accumulated more higher hydrogens chief feature: The core psychological weakness at the root of all one's psychological problems. hydrogens: A name synonymous with "matter". Hydrogens come in many varieties, from the "coarse" to the "refined". Coarse hydrogens are associated with heavy matter and lower negative states of consciousness, whereas refined hydrogens are associated with light matter and higher subtle states of consciousness. See impressions impressions: An "impression" is that which is absorbed by the mind during the act of observation. This term is another example of how the Fourth Way sees everything as material, even psychological processes. This term was also used as a label for artwork officially sanctioned by the school; for example, "I framed some impressions today and hung them on my wall." life: A derogatory term applied to people outside of "the Work". People who are not active members of Fourth Way schools. Also used as an adjective; ie, "try to avoid listening to life music." Perhaps an abbreviation for "ordinary life".
