Public Talks
The FWBO Glasgow Buddhist Centre has been making meditation and Buddhism available to the people of Glasgow since 1973. We have a varied programme of courses and drop-in classes at which you can learn to practise meditation and Buddhism in a friendly and comfortable environment.
This year we are celebrating the founding of an FWBO Buddhist group in Glasgow thirty years ago. As part of our celebrations we are having a series of public talks at Hillhead Library in Byres Road. All are welcome! Our introductory courses are suitable for complete beginners. For those who have completed one of our introductory courses there are opportunities to attend classes that take meditation and Buddhism a stage further. The Centre programme also includes complimentary activities such as yoga and taiji as well as events which focus on the creative arts. The Centre is a non-profit making organisation. In the programme all prices are given at the cost to the Centre based on our expenditure. However, if you feel that you cannot afford the stated amount please talk to one of the team organising the class you wish to attend. Our aim is to create a radical economy based on generosity, in which we each give what we can and take what we need. We depend heavily on donations and covenants from friends who share our aim of making Buddhism available to Glasgow and, increasingly, to Scotland as a whole.

"The Melbourne Buddhist Centre was established in 1993 and offers a wide range of activities, including meditation and Buddhism courses and classes, seminars, retreats and arts and social events. The centre has a well-stocked bookshop and audio and video tape library and hosts regular public talks on Buddhism from both local and visiting speakers. The centre caters for school visits, and we can also arrange for speakers to visit schools and colleges. The MBC is one of many centres around the world affiliated with the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order, a relatively new Buddhist movement, which makes available the Buddha's teaching to people from all cultures and backgrounds. We draw inspiration from all the great Buddhist schools in a systematic way to make the practices both comprehensible and accessible within a western cultural context. I hope that you enjoy your visit to our site, and that it stimulates you to visit us sometime and take part in a class or course.

Many different activities are organised at the Centre. Some people attend just to learn meditation, others want to find out about Buddhism. Some drop in just occasionally, others more regularly. For some, the Centre is at the heart of their lives. Activites include meditation classes, weekly workshops on various aspects of Buddhism, women's and men's events, weekend retreats and festivals. We have an excellent bookshop and video and tape libraries and can arrange visits from schools and other groups by appointment. The Centre is wheelchair-friendly.

About the Western Buddhist Review
The Western Buddhist Review is a Journal of Buddhist ideas, which publishes articles exploring the principles of Buddhism, in particular as practised within the tradition known as the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order. The FWBO started in the late 1960's through the inspiration of an Englishman, Venerable Sangharakshita. At that time he was the seniormost Western Buddhist monk, having spent twenty years in India. After three decades in the West, the FWBO has successfully taken root. It is particularly strong in the UK, but there are long established FWBO centres in many other countries world-wide, including India. As a Buddhist teacher, and in his writings, Sangharakshita has done much to promote clear thinking in Buddhism. If you are interested in his books or what he teaches, then you can find out more by visiting the FWBO Web Site You may not find much specifically about the FWBO in the Western Buddhist Review, even though most writers are likely to be members of the Western Buddhist Order. But all the papers are intended to have some bearing on the living of an authentic spiritual life. Some will be scholarly, others more concerned with matters literary, historical, scientific, or cultural. We would also like to publish new translations, book reviews, commentary on Buddhist scripture, as well as interpretations and clarifications of Buddhist doctrine.

Welcome to Ashvajit's Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO) Page This page was last updated on 7th November 2002 Hello .... my name is Ashvajit and I live in a Buddhist men's community called Padmaloka in the village of Surlingham, not far from Norwich, Norfolk, UK.  I am a Member - of some thirty years standing - of the Western Buddhist Order which was founded by Sangharakshita in 1968.  My chief sources of inspiration are the human historical Buddha, his teaching of the Path to Enlightenment, and the Sangha or community of Enlightened disciples.  My brothers in the community where I live are a source of inspiration to me too, as are literature, poetry and classical music.  I find inspiration in films and theatre occasionally, and write a little poetry now and again.  Before beginning to work as a full-time Buddhist, I practised as an architect. He is also the founder of The friends of the western buddhist order the FWBO- known as Trailokya Bauddha Mahasangha Sahayaka Gana (TBMSG) in India.
http://website.lineone.net/~ashvajit/Bhante.htm
URGYEN SANGHARAKSHITA
Sangharakshita is one of the founding fathers of Western Buddhism. He is a prolific writer on Buddhism, as well as a poet and meditator. He is a widely-read, extensively-travelled and deeply experienced student of both Eastern Buddhism and the Western cultural tradition. He is also the founder of The Friends of the Western Buddhist Order - the FWBO - known as Trailokya Bauddha Mahasangha Sahayaka Gana (TBMSG) in India. It is a large and dynamic Buddhist movement with Centres in nearly twenty countries, and is dedicated to encouraging people to live the Buddhist Life to the fullest possible extent in the modern world. Sangharakshita was born in 1925 in Tooting, South London, and grew up as Denis Lingwood. He read voraciously as a child, especially during a long period when he was confined to bed, having being diagnosed (incorrectly) as suffering from heart disease. Largely self-educated, he developed an interest in the cultures and philosophies of the East early on and realized, reading at the age of sixteen the Diamond Sutra and the Platform Sutra of Hui Neng, that he was a Buddhist, and had always been one. The Second World War took him to India, where he stayed on to become the Buddhist bhikshu Sangharakshita ('Protected by the Spiritual Community'). His first ordination was in the Theravadin tradition, but Sangharakshita also studied and practiced intensively under leading teachers from the Tibetan Vajrayana traditions and Chinese Ch'an. He went on to teach and write extensively on Buddhism and is the author of over forty books, translating the Buddhist tradition into terms relevant and inspiring to Westerners and Easterners alike. He is an accomplished poet and a commentator on literature and the arts.

Did you know that ...
  • the name Sangharakshita can in no way be translated as "Protector of the Sangha" ?! Sangharakshita was not the founder of the WBO ?! medical experts have stated that a number of suicides have occurred as a direct result of involvement with the FWBO and its teachings ?!
No? Take a look at ...
Is it

true?

BREAKING NEWS Take a look at our new section: The FWBO-Satires FWBO finances DBU The Indian government has declared Sangharakshita persona non grata. He will never again be granted a visa for this core-country of Buddhism.
Asked about this, order member Jnanacandra declared in a state of disbelief that "if that was true, he [Sangharakshita] would in fact no longer be a Buddhist!" Sangharakshita the Plagiarist : Writing his 'own' book "The Eternal Legacy" in 1985, Dennis Lingwood copied illegally from Dr. Edward Conze's book "The Prajnaparamita Literature", which was first published in 1960.
