All Buddhism and meditation classes at the Centre are led by ordained members of the Western Buddhist Order, who have many years' experience of teaching and practising Buddhism and meditation. Many different activities are organised at the Centre. Some people attend just to learn meditation, others want to find out about Buddhism. Some drop in just occasionally, others more regularly. For some, the Centre is at the heart of their lives. Activites include meditation classes, weekly workshops on various aspects of Buddhism, women's and men's events, weekend retreats and festivals. We have an excellent bookshop and video and tape libraries and can arrange visits from schools and other groups by appointment. The Centre is wheelchair-friendly.

http://www.fwbo-nyc.org/sangharakshita.html
About Sangharakshita Sangharakshita was born Dennis Lingwood in South London in 1925. Largely self-educated, he held a strong interest in Eastern cultures and philosophies from a very early age. At sixteen he realised he was a Buddhist. After serving in World War II in Sri Lanka, he took the opportunity to stay on in India. There, he lived as a wandering mendicant, and later was ordained as the Theravadin Buddhist monk Sangharakshita ("protected by the spiritual community"). In Kalimpong, where Sangharakshita lived for many years, he met many teachers from the Tibetan tradition. It was during this time that he had the opportunity to study under leading teachers from all the major Buddhist traditions. After twenty years in India, he returned to England to establish the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO) in 1967, and the Western Buddhist Order (called Trailokya Bauddha Mahasangha in India) in 1968. A translator between East and West, between the traditional world and the modern, between principles and practices, Sangharakshita's depth of experience and clear thinking have been appreciated throughout the world. He has always sought to discern the core teachings that underlie all Buddhist traditions, and to re-express them in ways that are relevant and spiritually vital. In particular, he has emphasized the significance of commitment in the spiritual life, the paramount value of spiritual friendship and community, the link between religion and art, and the need for a "new society" supportive of spiritual ideals.

Auckland Buddhist Centre The Auckland Buddhist Centre is part of a worldwide movement called the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO).
It is run by members of the Western Buddhist Order (WBO), who as well as teaching Buddhism and Meditation, establish centres, residential communities, retreat centres and team-based businesses. The FWBO was founded over 30 years ago in UK by Sangharakshita, a Westerner with a background in the whole of Buddhism. He was ordained in India as a Theravadin monk in 1950, and requested Bodhisattva ordination there in 1962. Also when many eminent lamas escaped into India, he was one of the first Westerners to meet them and receive Vajrayana practices.
The FWBO does not concentrate on any one Eastern cultural expression of Buddhism eg Japanese, Tibetan. So it is able to draw on the whole Buddhist tradition - in all its great richness and depth. We believe it is possible to identify an essential core of teachings common to all Buddhist schools, and transmit this to the West. The cultural trimmings are secondary - colourful as they may be - as they do not directly help Westerners adopt Buddhism as a modern way life.
Buddhism has adapted to each new culture it has come into contact with, and it is now gradually entering our Western culture. We do not regard Western culture as inherently any better than Eastern cultures - it just happens to be increasingly dominant at this time.

The Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO) - a new shoot on a 2500 year old trunk. The Buddha didn't drive a car. He didn't have to take a stance on GM technology or European integration, and he managed without a computer. All the same, his teaching is just as relevant now as it was 2500 years ago, and is today one of the fastest-growing spiritual traditions in the western world. Since 1967, the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO) has been presenting Buddhist teaching and practice in a way which is particularly suited to people in an industrialised society. Gunaketu here gives a short overview of this tradition. Buddhism in a nutshell The FWBO is the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order, and draws inspiration from the Buddha. Buddhism is a spiritual tradition which through teaching and practice help people to develop that compassionate love, wisdom and vitality we all have in potential. It is a treasury of advice and inspiration for those who want to develop their mind and being to ever higher levels. It is a way of life that has freedom as its essence and culminates in Enlightenment. The Buddha was the first person who, 2500 years ago in northern India, woke up to how the reality we live in really is. He was not divine, and certainly not a God, but a human being who after many years of determined searching realised his potential. After a gradual but radical transformation, he conquered all the limitations we as human beings struggle with. Thus emancipated, he did not withdraw, but wandered round India showing others how they could undergo the same transformation. It is this insight and these methods that over the millennia have been called the Buddha-dharma (Buddha's way), or in the last hundred years - Buddhism.
