Tell me more about the Mindfulness of Breathing meditation technique.
The Mindfulness of Breathing uses the breath as an object of concentration. By focusing on the breath one becomes aware of the mind's tendency to jump from one thing to another. Through disclipine and concentration we bring ourselves back to the present moment and the richness of experience that it contains. This practice develops alert and sensitive awareness. It is an excellent method for cultivating states of intense meditative absorption. It is also a good antidote to restlessness and anxiety. Do I have to be Buddhist to practise this meditation?

The Group meets to support our own efforts to establish a regular meditation practice. In addition to the regular meetings we offer:
    Introductory courses
    Day and weekend meditation retreats
    Talks
    Buddhist teaching sessions
Library of books and tapes We are affiliated to the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order [FWBO], and meetings are usually led by an FWBO Order Member. What is meditation? Meditation is a way of becoming more aware and alive to our moment-to-moment experience. All its effects, from simple relaxation to spiritual insight, follow from that. In the short term, meditation is an antidote to stress, a means of living with more calm and self-possession; while in the long term, it is a tool with which we can transform ourselves fundamentally. By applying a consistent effort in sessions of brief but regular practice, we will free ourselves from our limiting habits. In meditation, we learn not to react habitually to our experience, but to respond creatively to what comes to us. You do not have to be interested in Buddhism to benefit from meditation.

    About Sangharakshita
Sangharakshita was born Dennis Lingwood in South London in 1925. Largely self-educated, he held a strong interest in Eastern cultures and philosophies from a very early age. At sixteen he realised he was a Buddhist. After serving in World War II in Sri Lanka, he took the opportunity to stay on in India. There, he lived as a wandering mendicant, and later was ordained as the Theravadin Buddhist monk Sangharakshita ("protected by the spiritual community"). In Kalimpong, where Sangharakshita lived for many years, he met many teachers from the Tibetan tradition. It was during this time that he had the opportunity to study under leading teachers from all the major Buddhist traditions. After twenty years in India, he returned to England to establish the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO) in 1967, and the Western Buddhist Order (called Trailokya Bauddha Mahasangha in India) in 1968. A translator between East and West, between the traditional world and the modern, between principles and practices, Sangharakshita's depth of experience and clear thinking have been appreciated throughout the world. He has always sought to discern the core teachings that underlie all Buddhist traditions, and to re-express them in ways that are relevant and spiritually vital. In particular, he has emphasized the significance of commitment in the spiritual life, the paramount value of spiritual friendship and community, the link between religion and art, and the need for a "new society" supportive of spiritual ideals.

FWBO Friends of the Western Buddhist Order around the world The FWBO has many centers around the world. The links below offer information about each of them. They include Buddhist Centers that offer courses and classes in meditation and Buddhism, and possibly complementary practices such as yoga or tai chi. Retreat Centers are usually in the countryside and offer an opportunity to get away from one's ordinary life for a while and engage more deeply in meditation or Buddhist practice. Some Buddhists have decided to come together and form businesses , providing the opportunity for them to work with like minded people, and to offer something of value to the world.

Learning to Love by Sanghadevi We aim to give a full picture of women practising as Buddhists in the West today. There is information on what Buddhist Ordination for Women means and how you can help bring this about. There are also regularly updated articles by and about buddhist women practising in their every day lives. The FWBO is an international Buddhist movement founded in 1967 by Sangharakshita, an Englishman who spent twenty years practising Buddhism in India under Indian, Chinese and Tibetan teachers before returning to the West. The FWBO aims to take the essential truths of Buddhism and express them in ways appropriate to the modern world through meditation, study, the arts and the development of ethical businesses. We will be looking for a large piece of land with an old building (castle, farm, orphanage, convent or similar) that we can renovate and build around. As yet we don’t know which country this will be in, Spain, Portugal, France and Italy are all possibilities.

    Buddhism in the West
Buddhism is a path of practice and spiritual development leading to Insight into the true nature of life. Buddhist practices such as meditation are means of changing oneself in order to develop the qualities of awareness, kindness, and wisdom. The experience developed within the Buddhist tradition over thousands of years has created an incomparable resource for all those who wish to follow a path - a path which ultimately culminates in Enlightenment or Buddhahood. Because Buddhism does not include the idea of worshipping a creator God, some people do not see it as a religion in the normal, Western sense. The basic tenets of Buddhist teaching are straightforward and practical: nothing is fixed or permanent; actions have consequences; change is possible. Thus Buddhism addresses itself to all people irrespective of race, nationality, or gender. It teaches practical methods (such as meditation) which enable people to realise and utilise its teachings in order to transform their experience, to be fully responsible for their lives and to develop the qualities of Wisdom and Compassion. There are around 350 million Buddhists and a growing number of them are Westerners. They follow many different forms of Buddhism, but all traditions are characterised by non-violence, lack of dogma, tolerance of differences, and, usually, by the practice of meditation.
