Hermeticism is an ancient spiritual, philosophical, and magical tradition. It is a path of spiritual growth. Hermeticism takes its name from the God Hermês Trismegistos (Greek, "Thrice-Greatest Hermes"), a Græco-Egyptian form of the great Egyptian God of Wisdom and Magic, Thôth. What the Hermetic Fellowship defines as Hermeticism has also been called the Western Esoteric Tradition, and embraces the Perennial Philosophy or the Ageless Wisdom. Generally, the following can be said to be characteristic of the positive form of Hermeticism advocated by the Hermetic Fellowship.
Hermeticism:
Considers humanity to be on a spiritual journey to return to a state of unity with the Divine; this is the Great Work of humankind. Holds that if we would attain to the Divine, we must aspire to the Divine; spiritual growth cannot be achieved without human effort

Hermeticism:
Considers humanity to be on a spiritual journey to return to a state of unity with the Divine; this is the Great Work of humankind. Holds that if we would attain to the Divine, we must aspire to the Divine; spiritual growth cannot be achieved without human effort Is eclectic and draws material from sources spanning the entire Western Esoteric Tradition Is polytheistic, yet ultimately monotheisitic ( i.e., posits a multiplicity of Manifestations of the Divine Which emanate from an ultimate Divine Unity) Holds that the Divine is both immanent and transcendent Holds that the Universe is Divine and basically good Teaches that when we seek the Divine, we may best begin with the Mysteries of Nature Encourages spiritual curiosity Understands that human beings can access the Subtle Realms through technique and aspiration; to this end, it embraces theurgy, meditation, ritual, and other spiritual and magical practices Urges those who seek the Divine to also seek balance in embracing all things Is a poetic rather than an ascetic worldview

The Historical Background of Hermeticism
Hermeticism takes its name from the God Hermes Trismegistos or Thrice-Greatest Hermes. Trismegistos, in turn, was so-called because of His identification with the great Egyptian God of Wisdom and Magic, Thoth.

Our Order is looking to attract sincere people who are concerned about spiritual advancement. The Tree of Life is a worldwide fraternity dedicated to preparing sincere people for true Adepthood. It is here that the Student learns the "secrets" of listening and hearing that inner voice of Light called the "Higher Genius" or "Holy Guardian Angel." The Higher Genius is the True and Bornless you. It was reality before you were born, and it will be so after you die. It is timeless. Under the guidance of your own personal Higher Genius, you will learn the reason you are here, alive and in the flesh. This is your own True Will, and in the Hermetic tradition this development is called the “Great Work”.

Hermes Trismegistus Hermeticism derives its name from the Greek name for Thoth, also known as Thoth-Hermes, Hermes Trismegistus, or Thrice-Great Hermes. Thoth is an Egyptian god who was believed to have invented writing and who is portrayed as a scribe, teacher, god of magic, and as the `psychopompos', the soul's guide to the underworld. Hermeticism is an ancient philosopical tradition that emphasizes the importance of inner enlightenment or gnosis, rather than that of pure rationalism or doctrinal faith. It has often been said that western culture is based on the two polarities - of Greek rationality on the one hand, and biblical faith on the other. But there has always been an important third current in western culture, characterized by a resistance to the dominance of either of these polarities, and Hermeticism plays an key part here, along with other philosophies such as Gnosticism, and the Hermetic revival of the Italian Renaissance, etc. Very briefly, Hermeticism - unlike the dualist sects like the Cathars, for example - is described in the Hermetic writings as a worldview of One Reality, where all dichotomies, all distinctions between body and soul, spirit and matter, etc., are integrated as a part of one whole. Everything was seen as being interconnected with everything else, and such relationships rested on the principle of analogy. Reality, in the Hermetic way of thinking, is ultimately holistic and is a vital, living web of correspondences. Thus, the famous Hermetic maxim of "As above, so below". The aim of Hermeticism, like Gnosticism, was the deification or rebirth of man through the knowledge (gnosis) of the one transcendent God, the world, and humanity.

The Corpus Hermeticum
Archive Notes
The Hermetic tradition represents a non-Christian lineage of Hellenistic Gnosticism. The central texts of the tradition, the Corpus Hermeticum were lost to the West in classical times. Their rediscovery and translation during the late-fifteenth century by the Renaissance court of Cosimo de Medici, provided a seminal force in the development of Renaissance thought and culture. The complete Corpus Hermeticum is comprised of 18 tracts. Only the first and primary thirteen of these are presently contained in our library. The texts presented here are taken from the very fine translation of G.R.S. Mead, Thrice Great Hermes: Studies in Hellenistic Theosophy and Gnosis , Volume II (London: Theosophical Publishing Society, 1906). For an excellent introduction to this material, the Archive offers a lecture by Dr. Stephan Hoeller, on Hermes: The Thrice Great Hierophant of Gnosis . (This lecture is in RealAudio format and runs about 80 minutes).

What is Hermeticism?
Hermeticism is a path of magic which has evolved from a diverse blending of influences during two key periods. The first period was during the Rennaissance, when Christians of a mystical bent combined newly unearthed Greek, Hebrew and Arabic mysticism with native Alchemy, Freemasonry, and heretical Christian Theurgy and Thaumaturgy. The second period was during the Victorian era, when colonization of orient brought back a variety of meditational techniques (including Tantra) which were combined with the previously mentioned influences and both Spiritism and Theosophy. Arising from the muddle of secret organizations was the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a pseudo-masonic organization which claimed to be descended from the Rosicrucians. This organization harbored a good number of English aristocrats as members, as well as theologians, poets, and people still known primarily for their occult work. One such person was Aleister Crowley, who left the Order angrily and began work with Ordo Templi Orientis. Claiming to descend from the Knights Templar, this organization was largely centered in Germany and was focused primarily on Tantra (sexually induced trances.) Crowley added his own ideas to the mix, including his "Book of the Law", a kind of Holy Bible to the religion he founded called Thelema. During roughly the same period, Crowley's students and contemporaries added an immense amount of public literature to Hermeticism; largely because the Hermetic Orders were splintering into factions. New organizations devised new material in a flurry of inspiration, and individuals published the previously secret papers of dying Orders for the sake of posterity. During this period came forth individuals like Austin Osman Spare and Kenneth Grant, whose ideas on Hermetica go off into controversial directions (and border on, or are an early form of
