May 2001
Rabbi's Previous Columns The Society for Humanistic Judaism On the weekend of May 4-6 we will be privileged at Beth Or to host the national conference of the Society for Humanistic Judaism. While significant tenets of our movement have to do with individual freedom, it is important that we associate ourselves with and support the efforts to strengthen the larger community of those identified with Humanistic Judaism. All who attend the conference will have the opportunity to dialogue with and learn from Humanistic Jews from across the country, including various speakers from within our own congregation who are part of the program. We will be able to share ideas and draw strength from one another. In particular, we will all be privileged to have the opportunity to learn from Rabbi Sherwin Wine, the founder of Humanistic Judaism. What I wrote in an article entitled The Many Faces of Beth Or in the January edition of the Light: "One of the most beautiful qualities of our congregation is its openness to diversity," is equally true of our entire movement. It is all too common in congregational life, as elsewhere, for people to believe that they know what is best and to feel even threatened by ideas that are different from their own. This can sometimes lead to a narrow and often arrogant isolationism. We will have the opportunity to be intellectually and spiritually strengthened by our association with members of the Society of Humanistic Judaism who will be visiting us at Beth Or.

95. International Federation Of Secular Humanistic Jews
Worldwide linking for secular Jews who wish to affirm their judaism by celebrating their Jewish identity.
http://www.ifshj.org
Secular Humanistic Jews understand Judaism as the human-centered history, culture, civilization, ethical values, and shared experience of the Jewish people. For us, the message of Jewish history is that we have the power and the responsibility to take control of our own lives. Today, more than ever, secular Jews need a collective voice. This voice is expressed worldwide by The International Federation of Secular Humanistic Jews, which links national organizations in Israel, the United States, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, Australia, France, Belgium, Italy and the countries of the former Soviet Union. The goals of the Federation and our constituent organizations are to reach out to secular Jews and offer communities where we can affirm our Judaism, celebrate our Jewish identity, educate our children about their rich and vibrant heritage, and fully participate in Jewish life. click here to view photos from our recent conference and tour of Brussels and Prague Jewish Continuity Communities Projects ...
