The Messianic Idea in Judaism
Belief in the eventual coming of the moshiach is a basic and fundamental part of traditional Judaism. It is part of Rambam 's 13 Principles of Faith , the minimum requirements of Jewish belief . In the Shemoneh Esrei prayer, recited three times daily, we pray for all of the elements of the coming of the moshiach: ingathering of the exiles; restoration of the religious courts of justice; an end of wickedness, sin and heresy; reward to the righteous; rebuilding of Jerusalem; restoration of the line of King David; and restoration of Temple service. Modern scholars suggest that the messianic concept was introduced later in the history of Judaism, during the age of the prophets. They note that the messianic concept is not mentioned anywhere in the Torah (the first five books of the Bible).

Level: Basic Traditional Judaism firmly believes that death is not the end of human existence. However, because Judaism is primarily focused on life here and now rather than on the afterlife, Judaism does not have much dogma about the afterlife, and leaves a great deal of room for personal opinion. It is possible for an Orthodox Jew to believe that the souls of the righteous dead go to a place similar to the Christian heaven, or that they are reincarnated through many lifetimes, or that they simply wait until the coming of the messiah , when they will be resurrected. Likewise, Orthodox Jews can believe that the souls of the wicked are tormented by demons of their own creation, or that wicked souls are simply destroyed at death, ceasing to exist.

Some scholars claim that belief in the afterlife is a teaching that developed late in Jewish history. It is true that the

Messianic Judaism: What is it?
Messianic Judaism is the term used to define Jewish people who believe in Jesus. Messianic Jews maintain a lifestyle and form of worship that identifies them with Jewish customs and traditions while believing that Yeshua (Jesus) of Nazareth is the promised Messiah of the Jewish Scriptures. Messianic Judaism is part of the universal Body of Messiah, but claims the right to express itself, in a way that agrees with its Jewish heritage.
One of the goals of Messianic Judaism is to build bridges of understanding between Judaism and the Christian church. Because of its origin and composition, Messianic Judaism seeks to help the church to rediscover its Jewish roots. Likewise, Messianic Judaism helps traditional Judaism to have a better understanding of the common heritage that it has with the Christian faith.

Shalom! Messianic Judaism is a modern movement with an ancient past. All the first followers of Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah were Messianic Jews. In recent years, more and more Jewish people are believing that the Messiah has come. At the same time, more and more Christians are exploring the Jewish roots of their faith. Lederer/Messianic Jewish Communications has a two-pronged purpose reaching Jewish people with the message of the Messiah, and teaching Christians about the Jewish background to the New Testament. We accomplish these goals through:

Pesach Pesach (Passover) commemorates the Exodus when G-d freed the Israelites from bondage in Egypt. It is also the first of the three feasts that require a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Pesach begins the evening of Aviv (Nisan) 14. It is a night to remember when G-d passed over Egypt killing the firstborn of each household that did not have lambsblood on its doorway. We commemorate Pesach each year by having a seder. The Haggadah is traditionally read, which tells the story of the Exodus and teaches of G-d's mighty arm redeeming Israel from bondage. It is at this meal that the youngest one at the Seder traditionally asks four questions, beginning with "why is this night different from all other nights?" The seder ends with the hope of "Next Year in Jerusalem." Over the years many mistaken traditions have crept into Passover observance, for more info see Passoverisms: Rabbinic Follies. For Messianics, we believe Yeshua was our Pashal lamb in Him we find deliverance from sin and death. Matzo Matzo (Feast of Unleavened Bread) follows Pesach, though many refer to the Festival of Pesach as meaning both festivals: Pesach and Matzo. The Feast of Matzo lasts from Aviv (Nisan) 15-21. No leaven is consumed during this holy festival, reminiscent of the Exodus, when the Israelites fled from Egypt having no time for their bread to rise it was baked unleavened.

Membership Israel Members Only Sign In Miscellaneous Image Awards True Jewish Heroes News News News Archive The Quiet Holocaust The Perfidious Plot to Convert Jews By Meira Bat Avraham It's not easy being a Jew. Ours is a faith of personal accountability, of strict rules for daily life, of social obligations and community covenant. Our hardfast commitment to our people, our laws, our G-d, have spawned in an intolerant world hatred, an ever-growing resolution to force us to change, and now, renewed commitment to dwindle our ranks. The more blatant results of anti-Semitism, are, of course, well known to us. We will never forget the Inquisition, the pogroms of eastern Europe, the Holocaust. We are reminded regularly of the ongoing rejection of our people each time we receive hate literature, see news from Israel, eye skinheads on the street, hear Louis Farrakhan's vile speeches. However, perhaps the most insidious, dangerous, and hateful anti-Semitism is more subtle, less easy to spot, less provoking of criticism. This type of anti-Semitism is societally condoned. It can be characterized as "affectionate, compassionate anti-Semitism". I am speaking of the evangelical Christians, particularly the Baptists, who are attempting to LOVE US TO DEATH. While a determination to "save" the Jews has always been among the cornerstones of the evangelical movement, only recently have churches and ministries upgraded their mission to a more active status. In 1996, the Southern Baptist Convention not only passed a resolution calling on all Baptists to "direct their energies and resources toward the proclamation of the Gospel to the Jewish people", but directed $100,000 toward the cost of hiring a full-time missionary to the Jews. Individual churches have also directed funds toward this effort. (It is of note that the Southern Baptists were the propounders of the statement "G-d does not hear the prayer of a Jew.")

What is Messianic Judaism?
The rebirth of modern Israel has been paralleled by a revival of interest in spirituality among Jewry worldwide. Amidst this search for meaning and truth, Jewish people have once again examined the Hebrew Scriptures, the most ancient and central document in Jewish faith. Many have compared the teachings of the Torah and the Prophets with the claims of the New Testament. A great number of these people have come to embrace the belief that Jesus is the Messiah of Israel and that the New Testament is, after all, a Jewish book ... about a Jewish Messiah. While Messianic Judaism is new in some respects, it is also ancient. It stands on a foundation going back to biblical times. In the first century CE, there were several different sects within Judaism Pharisees, Saduccees and Herodians to name a few. These different Jewish groups were unquestionably part of the larger Jewish community. A great number of Judeans comprised one of these groups the Nazarenes. These were followers of the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, and the forerunners of today's Messianic Judaism. The rise of the current Messianic Jewish movement began simultaneously with the rise of the Zionist movement in the early 1900s. Study groups and fellowships began to sprout throughout the United States and in different parts of the world. The explosive growth that solidified the Messianic movement, however, took place in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Today there are over 200 Messianic Synagogues in the United States and approximately 50 in Israel. The movement's rapid growth continues, with new congregations being started in the former Soviet Union, Latin America, and in key cities around the world.
