Ohev Yisrael Messianic Jewish Congregation
About Ohev Yisrael
Ohev Yisrael is a Messianic Jewish congregation founded on Yeshua Ha Mashiach (Jesus the Messiah) who, according to the Hebrew Scriptures, died for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day. We worship the GOD of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in a style reflective of first century synagogues where followers of Mashiach Yeshua from both Jewish and non-Jewish backgrounds assembled in unity. Our worship and observance seek to fulfill Yeshua's words for true worshippers, blending together the Torah (the word of GOD) and Ruach Hakodesh (truth and spirit). We rely on the Holy Scriptures as our source of truth and on the Holy Spirit for power, gifts, and direction in our lives.
Vision
Our vision is to pursue the restoration and unity of the Church, Israel, and the world under the Kingship of Yeshua the Messiah by serving as a Bible based, first century, new covenant congregation of Jews and Gentiles.
What is Messianic Judaism?
Messianic Judaism focuses upon the Mashiach (Messiah) of Yisrael (Israel). The Mashiach is the central tenet of the Pentateuch (The first five books of Scripture). Torah contains at least 75 passages which mention or are related to the Messiah. The writings of the Prophets contains at least 243 passages on the Mashiach. The Messiah is clearly the central focus of Scripture. Therefore the Mashiach is at the center of the Messianic believer's life. Yeshua (Jesus) was himself a Jew, raised in a Jewish home, of the

King Solomon built the First Temple in the 10th century BCE. It was destroyed in 586 BCE by the Babylonians. The Second Temple was built on the same ground in 516 BCE and was vastly enlarged and beautified by Herod in 20 BCE. The Temple was again destroyed, this time by the Romans in 70 CE. IS IT JEWISH TO BELIEVE IN JESUS? To some, the concept of a Jew believing Yeshua seems to be a contradiction. The reason is, many people have a dichotomy set up in their minds. On the one hand, you have Jews and Judaism and on the other hand, Christians and Christianity. YOU ARE EITHER ONE OR THE OTHER...SO THE THINKING GOES. But this simple dichotomy is in reality not so simple. If we go back 2,000 years we find that Yeshua was a Jew living in a Jewish land among Jewish people. All the apostles were Jewish as well as the writers of the New Covenant and for many years this faith in Yeshua was strictly a Jewish one. From the Book of Acts and other historical evidence, many believe that in the first century there were literally hundreds of thousands of Messianic Jews In addition, there were Messianic Synagogues scattered throughout the Roman Empire and beyond.

What is Messianic Judaism?
It is impossible to understand what Messianic Judaism is without knowing a bit of history...
Scriptural Judaism
Older than and much different from modern Rabbinical Judaism is what this essay will label Scriptural Judaism: how the Torah told the Israelites to be Jewish. It is not a modern division of Judaism. It cannot be practiced today because it relies on animal sacrifices, and Leviticus 17:8-9 has prohibited these since the Second Temple was destroyed in the year 70 C.E.. So there are no Scriptural Jewish congregations, as there are Rabbinically Jewish congregations and Messianic Jewish congregations. The Judaism of Yeshua's day was Scriptural Judaism. It was augmented by much rabbinical teaching, but its focus was the Temple and its rituals and sacrifices.
Judaism Divides
In the year 70 C.E. the Second Temple was destroyed. It was no longer possible to practice Scriptural Judaism. Without the Temple sacrifices to atone for their sins, what would the Jewish people do? At that time there were many sects of Judaism: Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes, Zealots, Nazarenes. All of these were different ways of augmenting Scriptural Judaism with other teachings. Only two of these sects survived: the Pharisees and the Nazarenes.

Messianic Judaism is a biblically based movement of Jewish people from all walks of life, in all parts of the world, who have come to believe in Yeshua (Yeshua is the Hebrew name for Jesus which means Salvation) as the promised Jewish Messiah and the Savior of Israel and of all the world. Today, there are up to 100,000 Messianic Jews in the United States and Messianic synagogues are springing up in almost every major city of the land. Messianic synagogues are to be found in many nations including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, England, France, Holland, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia, and South Africa. In Israel there 69 Messianic congregations and a dozen or so home groups. These congregations in Israel experience varying degrees of hardship, vandelism, violence and persecution. They need our ongoing prayers.
