Our Tradition - the path of wisdom and compassion
Kadampa Buddhism is a Mahayana Buddhist school founded by the great Indian Buddhist Master Atisha (982-1054 AD) His followers are known as Kadampas: 'ka' means 'word' and refers to Buddha's teachings, and 'dam' refers to Atisha's special Lamrim instructions known as the stages of the path to enlightenment. The great Kadampa Teachers are famous not only for being great scholars but also for being spiritual practitioners of immense purity and sincerity. The lineages of these teachings, both their scriptural transmission and realization, were then passed from Teacher to disciple, and spread throughout much of Asia, and now to many countries throughout the western world. Buddha's teachings, which are known as Dharma , are likened to a wheel that moves from country to country in accordance with changing conditions and people's karmic inclinations. The external forms of presenting Buddhism may change as it meets with different cultures and societies, but its essential authenticity is ensured through the continuation of an unbroken lineage of realized practitioners.

New Kadampa Tradition
The New Kadampa Tradition (NKT) was established by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso to preserve and make available Kadampa Buddhism throughout the world in a form that is suited to the modern world and way of life. By using this title to describe the association of Centres following his spiritual direction, Geshe Kelsang Gyatso is making it clear that practitioners of this tradition are principally following the teachings and example of Atisha and Je Tsongkhapa . The word 'New' is used not to imply that the tradition is newly created, but to show that it is a fresh presentation of Buddhadharma in a form and manner appropriate to the needs and conditions of the modern world. New programs such as the General Program Foundation Program , and Teacher Training Program have been specially designed to meet the needs of western practitioners. By using the title 'Kadampa', Geshe Kelsang Gyatso encourages his disciples to follow the perfect example of simplicity and purity of practice shown by the ancient Kadampas.

An introduction from a New kadampa buddhism perspective to Buddhist religion, philosophy, teachings, meditation, and practice.

Welcome to About Buddhists
All living beings have the same basic wish to be happy and avoid suffering, but very few people understand the real causes of happiness and suffering. We generally believe that external conditions such as food, friends, cars, and money are the real causes of happiness, and as a result we devote nearly all our time and energy to acquiring these. Superficially it seems that these things can make us happy, but if we look more deeply we will see that they also bring us a lot of suffering and problems. Happiness and suffering are states of mind, and so their main causes cannot be found outside the mind. The real source of happiness is inner peace. If our mind is peaceful, we shall be happy all the time, regardless of external conditions, but if it is disturbed or troubled in any way, we shall never be happy, no matter how good our external con- ditions may be. External conditions can only make us happy if our mind is peaceful. We can understand this through our own experience. For instance, even if we are in the most beautiful surroundings and have everything we need, the moment we get angry any happiness we may have disappears. This is because anger has destroyed our inner peace. Subscribe Below For More Information!

Thought of the Week A Simple Meditation Tilopa Centre is a member of the New Kadampa Tradition (NKT) of Mahayana Buddhism. The Kadampa Tradition originates from Atisha, an Indian Buddhist master who was invited to teach in Tibet in the 10th century. Atisha specially arranged of all Buddha's teachings into a comprehensive collection that explains how to enter into, progress, and complete the Buddhist path to enlightenment. This arrangement became known as Lamrim in Tibetan or Stages of the Path to Enlightenment . Someone who practices Lamrim is a Kadampa. As Spiritual Director of the NKT, Geshe Kelsang Gyatso encourages his students to be inspired by the Kadampa Geshes, the followers of Atisha, who were not only great scholars but also spiritual practitioners of great purity and sincerity. In the 14th century another great teacher, Je Tsongkhapa appeared in Tibet. He became famous for his clear teachings and profound writings. After this time, the tradition became known as the New Kadampa Tradition. All of Geshe Kelsang's books are commentaries to Je Tsongkhapa's teachings and maintain this unbroken lineage of teachings from Buddha Shakyamuni, through Atisha, to Je Tsongkhapa to the present day.

About Kadampa Buddhism
Kadampa Buddhism is a Mahayana Buddhist school founded by the great Indian Buddhist Master Atisha (982-1054 AD). Kadampa Buddhism offers Modern Day Buddhism designed for Westerners. It offers timeless techniques that are easy to understand and apply to daily life. Most of Kadampa Buddhists, including the vast majority of teachers, practitioners, monks and nuns are Westerners. Thus the emphasis is on helping Westerns gain access to the beauty and wisdom of Buddhism. Transforming daily activities By integrating their knowledge of all Buddha's teachings into their practice of Lamrim, and by integrating this into their everyday life, Kadampa Buddhists are encouraged to use Buddha's teachings as practical methods for transforming daily activities into the spiritual path. The great Kadampa Teachers are famous not only for being great scholars but also for being spiritual practitioners of immense purity and sincerity. The lineages of these teachings, both their scriptural transmission and realizations, were then passed from teacher to disciple, and spread throughout much of Asia, and now to many countries throughout the western world.
