Buddhism - a complete path of personal development Buddhism is a major world religion that arose from the inspiration and teachings of Buddha. It is a complete way of life concerned with the wholesome development of the individual. Buddhism can be best summarised by the words of Buddha himself: Learn to do good,
Cease to do harm,
Control the mind,
And benefit others.
Buddhism teaches us how to overcome our problems and difficulties by understanding and preventing their causes. Whereas we usually look to outward circumstances for the causes of our problems, Buddha taught us to look inwards. He showed how our feelings of dissatisfaction arise from negative states of mind - primarily anger, attachment, and ignorance - and offered methods to eliminate these by developing generosity, compassion, wisdom and other positive states of mind. Through cultivating these qualities we discover an inner state of peace and strength.

Buddhism for Today, Practical Learning for a Lifetime
The Three Special Spiritual Programs of Kadampa Buddhism
There are three reasons why we need to study and practice the teachings of Buddha:
  • To develop our wisdom To cultivate a good heart To maintain a peaceful state of mind
If we do not strive to develop our wisdom, we shall always remain ignorant of ultimate truth - the true nature of reality. Although we wish for happiness, our ignorance leads us to engage in non-virtuous actions, which are the main cause of all our suffering. If we do not cultivate a good heart, our selfish motivation destroys harmony and good relationships with others. We have no peace, and no chance to gain pure happiness. Without inner peace, outer peace is impossible. If we do not maintain a peaceful state of mind we are not happy even if we have ideal conditions. On the other hand, when our mind is peaceful we are happy even if our external conditions are unpleasant. Therefore, the development of these qualities is of utmost importance for our daily happiness.

Kadampa Meditation in San Diego Kadampa Buddhism is a time-honored tradition of meditation that teaches the integration of profound methods for developing inner peace into our daily lives. These teachings have the same universal relevance today as when they were first taught by Buddha 2,500 years ago. They can be practiced by anyone in any culture, regardless of race, gender, or age. We do not need to be a Buddhist to try out these practices, or to benefit from them. Vajrarupini Buddhist Center was founded in 1995 by the renowned author and meditation master Geshe Kelsang Gyatso , who has dedicated his life to bringing the ancient wisdom of Buddha into modern society. The purpose of Vajrarupini Center is to enable the development of inner peace through the study and practice of Kadampa Buddhist meditation. Classes are taught by the resident teacher, Buddhist nun Gen Kelsang Tubpa , and by senior students at the Center.

Stress and meditation
Several years ago when I was going through a period of stress, I saw a poster for a meditation course. It was run by a Buddhist organization called the New Kadampa Tradition ( NKT ). I knew very little about Buddhism (and was later to find what I thought I knew was wrong), and absolutely nothing about the NKT. So I turned up at the first meeting with some trepidation. What was I going to find - a cult, a sect, a bunch of latter-day hippies, or weirdo religious fanatics asking me whether I was 'saved' or 'born again'? (My mother always said once was enough). I was pleasantly surprised to find that everyone there seemed reasonably normal (at any rate by my standards) and the 'religious aspects' were very low key. The emphasis was on using meditation techniques to produce beneficial results in our everyday life. This suited me, because I was a total materialist who had abandoned childhood religious beliefs by my early teens. The NKT teachers gave some philosophical teachings, but for the most part these seemed very humanistic and sensible. Nevertheless, I couldn't really see how it was possible for Buddhists to believe that the mind was anything other than the brain, or that there exists any non-material aspect to the universe. Religious background - early childhood I was baptised as an Anglican, probably to please my grandparents since my father is an atheist and my mother agnostic. Consequently, I passed my early childhood in blissful ignorance of any form of religion.

Modern Day Kadampas:
The New Kadampa Tradition is a special Kadampa tradition of Mahayana Buddhism, founded by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. Although established as a distinct tradition in 1991, the New Kadampa Tradition arose, as with all Buddhist traditions, from the teaching, example and blessings of Buddha Shakyamuni. These were then transmitted through a lineage of realised Buddhist Masters, including the Indian Buddhist Master Atisha, the founder of the Old Kadampa Tradition, and the Tibetan Buddhist Masters, Je Tsongkhapa and Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche, the root spiritual guide, or Guru, of Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche.
Buddha taught how to examine our mind and see which states produce misery and confusion, and which states produce health and happiness.
He taught how to overcome the compulsively non-virtuous minds that confine us to states of discontent and misery, and how to cultivate the virtuous minds that liberate us from pain and lead us to the bliss of full enlightenment. Buddha Shakyamuni, or Gautama Buddha, (circa 6th century BC), is the fourth of the thousand Buddhas that will appear in this world during what is called the 'Fortunate Aeon'. As a Supreme Emanation Body, he performed the twelve principal deeds, and by 'turning the wheel of Dharma', presented the Sutra teachings of both Hinayana and Mahayana, and appearing in the aspect of Buddha Vajradhara revealed the Vajrayana, or Tantra, teachings.
