From its humble beginnings in a small studio in the 5 th arrondissement, the centre is presently located in a large apartment close to Nation, and is soon to move to spacious premises nearby which will become the first Buddhist temple within the city boundaries. Gen Lhamo: 'The majority of those who visit us for the first time are simply curious to discover how Buddhism can enrich the quality of their life. People come from all religious backgrounds, and none, and from all walks of life.' No one can deny that increasingly, consumer items are sold with a spiritual guarantee, from holidays promising an inner journey, to perfumes – it's no longer enough to smell good, the fragrance must also bring calm to the wearer, and CDs for relaxation, 'serenity' has become a buzz word. Although it's easy to be taken in by this form of spiritual materialism, increasingly people are realising that serenity is not something you can buy but a state of mind cultivated within using the technique of meditation. The centre's spiritual director is the Tibetan teacher and meditation master, Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, a naturalised British citizen who has been teaching in the West for twenty years. In his book

The third Swiss Dharma Festival
of Kadampa Buddhism
In this the third Swiss festival of Kadampa Buddhism, two courses with English translation will be offered. In the first course Kadam Björn Clausen will grant the tantric empowerment of the universal healer, the Medicine Buddha. During the empowerment we receive special blessings creating the cause for us to be able to heal ourself and others on every level of body and mind. According to the teachings of Buddha all the causes of disease lie in the mind. Due to states of mind like ignorance, attachment, anger, anxiety and frustration we experience our world in a distorted manner. We may identify with these delusions, or we may repress them. Either way, they determine our experiences and our responses, and induce us to create the causes for physical and mental suffering. Under their influence we engage in negative actions that produce suffering. Also our deeply rooted negative projections eventually manifest themselves in the form of actual physical and mental disease. Through receiving and practising the precise instructions of the Medicine Buddha we establish a connection with the Healing Buddhas and receive their blessings. This connection gives us a special power to heal ourselves and others. In particular we can also use the practice of Medicine Buddha to recognize and abandon those delusions which are creating our own diseases, and to purify our negative karma.

Kadampa Buddhism is a Mahayana Buddhist school founded by the great Indian Buddhist Master Atisha (AD 982 - 1054). Atisha's followers are known as 'Kadampas'. 'Ka' means 'word' and refers to Buddha's teachings, and 'dam' refers to Atisha's special Lamrim instructions known as 'the stages of the path to enlightenment'. The Kadampa tradition was later promoted widely in Tibet by Je Tsongkhapa and his followers, who were known as the 'New Kadampas'. Through teachings and writings of unparalleled clarity and comprehensiveness, an immaculate personal example, and tireless energy, Je Tsongkhapa single-handedly revitalized Buddhism in Tibet, giving it a new lease of life that was to last until the present century. By integrating their knowledge of all Buddha's teachings into their practice of Lamrim, and by integrating this into their everyday lives, Kadampa Buddhist 's are encouraged to use Buddha's teachings as practical methods for transforming daily activities into the path to enlightenment. The great Kadampa Teachers are famous not only for being great scholars but also for being spiritual practitioners of immense purity and sincerity.

About Kadampa Buddhism
Kadampa Buddhism is a Mahayana Buddhist school founded by the great Indian Buddhist Master Atisha (982-1054 AD). His followers are known as Kadampas: 'ka' means 'word' and refers to Buddha's teachings, and 'dam' refers to Atisha's special Lamrim instructions known as the stages of the path to enlightenment. Thus a Kadampa is someone who relies on the word of Buddha by practicing the instructions of Lamrim. Transforming daily activities
By integrating their knowledge of all Buddha's teachings into their practice of Lamrim, and by integrating this into their everyday life, Kadampa Buddhists are encouraged to use Buddha's teachings as practical methods for transforming daily activities into the spiritual path. The great Kadampa Teachers are famous not only for being great scholars but also for being spiritual practitioners of immense purity and sincerity. The lineages of these teachings, both their scriptural transmission and realizations, were then passed from teacher to disciple, and spread throughout much of Asia, and now to many countries throughout the western world.

Kadampa Frequently Asked Questions

Who was Buddha?
The founder of Buddhism in this world was Buddha Shakyamuni who lived and taught in India some two and a half thousand years ago. Since then millions of people around the world have followed the pure spiritual path he revealed. The Buddhist way of life of peace, loving kindness and wisdom is just as relevant today as it was in ancient India. Buddha explained that all our problems and suffering arise from confused and negative states of mind, and that all our happiness and good fortune arise from peaceful and positive states of mind. He taught methods for gradually overcoming our negative minds such as anger, jealousy and ignorance, and developing our positive minds such as love, compassion and wisdom. Through this we will come to experience lasting peace and happiness. These methods work for anyone, in any country, in any age. Once we have gained experience of them for ourselves we can pass them on to others so they too can enjoy the same benefits.
