Kadampa Buddhism - NKT
The Kadampa tradition was founded in Tibet by the Indian teacher Atisha (982 - 1054). Up to the time of the great reformer Lama Tsongkhapa (1357 - 1419) it was known as the Old Kadampa Tradition. After the time of Lama Tsongkhapa it is known as the New Kadampa Tradition ( NKT ). Initially there were two principle lines of teaching (lineages) passed down from Buddha Shakyamuni. These were the wisdom lineage of Nagarjuna and the method lineage of Asanga. The wisdom lineage, which emphasises the teachings on sunyata, or emptiness of inherent existence , passed from Buddha Shakyamuni to Manjushri, from Manjushri to Nagarjuna, then to Chandrakirti and further Indian Buddhist masters. The method lineage, which emphasises moral discipline and compassion passed from Buddha Shakyamuni to Maitreya, from Maitreya to Asanga and then to Vasubandhu and further Indian masters. The great Indian teacher Atisha gathered these two lineages together and brought them to Tibet, where Buddhism, originally introduced by Padmasambhava, had been seriously weakened by persecution. Atisha successfully revived Buddhism in Tibet. His principal teachings are known as Lamrim and are set down in 'Lamp for the Stages of the Path'. Lama Tsongkhapa (1357 - 1419) was born at a time when Tibetan Buddhism was being undermined by confusion. He single-handedly reformed and revitalised Tibetan Buddhism giving it the clarity and impetus which has lasted to the present day. Eminent modern Kadampa scholars have included Je Pabongkhapa, Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche and Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. Geshe Kelsang Gyatso is a noted translator and author who is responsible for the introduction of Lama Tsongkhapa's teachings to western readers. A very brief introduction to Kadampa meditational practice is given in the

1. What is Kadampa Buddhism?
Kadampa Buddhism is a time-honoured tradition that for centuries has made Buddha's teachings and meditation practices available to people throughout the world. Kadampa Buddhism is a Mahayana Buddhist school founded by the great Indian Buddhist Master Atisha (AD 982-1054). His followers are known as 'Kadampas'. 'Ka' means 'word' and refers to Buddha's teachings, and 'dam' refers to Atisha's special Lamrim instructions known as 'the stages of the path to enlightenment'. The Kadampa tradition was later promoted widely in Tibet by Je Tsongkhapa and his followers, who were known as the 'New Kadampas'. back to top 2. What is a Kadampa Buddhist?
By integrating their knowledge of all Buddha's teachings into their practice of Lamrim, and by integrating this into their everyday lives, Kadampa Buddhists are encouraged to use Buddha's teachings as practical methods for transforming daily activities into the path to enlightenment. Buddhist teachings and meditation for personal growth
Escape from the busyness of modern life by discovering the ancient art of Buddhist meditation. Create an inner space and tranquility free from the turbulence of modern living. Meditation helps you:
  • increase positive states of mind reduce stress and anxiety experience greater contentment and well-being improve concentration develop better relationships and, maintain greater physical health.
"The purpose of meditation is to make our mind calm and peaceful. If our mind is peaceful we shall be free from worries and mental discomfort, and we shall experience true happiness; but if our mind is not peaceful we shall find it very difficult to be happy, even if we are living in the very best conditions. If we train in meditation our mind will gradually become more and more peaceful, and we shall experience a purer and purer form of happiness. Eventually, we shall be happy all of the time, even in the most difficult circumstances."
-Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Shakyamuni Buddhist Center is a Western Buddhist Meditation Temple in Albuquerque. and
The New Kadampa Tradition (NKT)
Kadampa Buddhism is dedicated to bringing peace and happiness to all living beings. It is a living school of Mahayana (meaning, Great Vehicle) Buddhism which clearly demonstrates methods for increasing temporary and ultimate happiness, as originally taught by Buddha. These teachings were re-presented by the great Indian Master Atisha 'The Stages of the Path to Enlightenment' powerful ability to transform their mind into more and more positive states . The great Kadampa Teachers and practitioners are famous not only for being great scholars but also as spiritual practitioners of immense purity and sincerity . These teachings have been passed down in an unbroken lineage from teacher to disciple and have not only spread throughout much of Asia, but now to many countries of the Western world. Adapting to the different ways of life wherever these teachings go, their essential meaning, authenticity and effectiveness remain unaltered. Another special quality of Kadampa Buddhism is that all of the teachers live in and understand the present lifestyle of their students , and teach directly in their same language according to their individual needs and inclinations. In this way, many thousands of Westerners are enjoying the immeasurable benefits of the Kadampa way of life. By integrating these clear and practical instructions into our daily lives, we not only solve our everyday problems, but also experience for ourselves the joy of making meaningful spiritual progress.

Buddhism
Kadampa Buddhism New Kadampa Tradition Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Buddhism The founder of Buddhism in this world was Buddha Shakyamuni who lived and taught in India 2,500 years ago. Motivated by compassion, he left the royal family he was born into, determined to understand and overcome the causes of suffering. Through engaging in the spiritual path and training in meditation, he attained enlightenment - a state of permanent freedom from suffering, and of perfect wisdom. He spent the rest of his life teaching and helping others to gain the same understanding and freedom. Buddha explained that happiness is a state of mind. If we want to be happy, we need to learn how to change our mind. Through practical methods of meditation and cultivating a good heart, we can learn to control our negative states of mind (such as anger) and develop positive minds (such as love and compassion). As a result we too will come to experience lasting peace and happiness. Since the time of Buddha millions of people around the world have followed the pure spiritual path he revealed. The Buddhist way of life - focusing on inner peace, loving kindness and wisdom - is just as relevant today as it was in ancient India. Kadampa Buddhism The instructions are easy to follow and put into practice, emphasising the importance of transforming our daily activities into the spiritual path.

http://website.lineone.net/~kwelos/kadampa.htm
Kadampa Buddhism - NKT According to the New Kadampa Tradition (NKT), Buddhist beliefs are of little use if just held intellectually, they also need to be 'realised' intuitively and then mixed with the root mind. The main motivation of Buddhist training is to develop deep compassion for all sentient beings, this is known as bodhicitta.
The eminent Tibetan scholar Geshe Kelsang Gyatso states in Universal Compassion [1] that compassion is the root of a Buddha because all Buddhas arise fom the mind of compassion, it is the root of Dharma because Buddhas give Dharma teachings out of compassion for others, and it is the root of the Sangha (the community of Buddhist practitioners) because it is impossible to become Sangha without practising compassion. Universal Compassion is a translation and commentary on Geshe Chekhawa's Training the mind in Seven Points. It is probably the clearest and most beautiful explanation in the English language of Mahayana teachings and meditational practices on compassion.
Buddhist teachings on compassion are extremely practical. Their immediate purpose is to lessen the stress on ourselves and those around us by making us more peaceful, understanding and patient. Ultimately, they reduce the negative imprints in our root mind that form the causes of uncontrolled rebirth and the obstacles to liberation.

Kadampa Buddhism
The Florida meditation centers are all members of the New Kadampa Tradition. To learn about this tradition, begin by reading the answers to some frequently asked questions below. The Kadampa Buddhist Temple, England How can you have a 'new tradition'? The original Kadampa tradition came from Buddha himself, and passed down through a lineage of Indian masters to the Kadampa practitioners of Tibet. 'Kadampa' just means 'those who rely purely on Buddha's advice'. When Geshe Kelsang was invited to the West, he saw there was a need to strip Buddhism of its cultural overtones and make the pure teachings of Buddha available to all people throughout the world, regardless of race, culture, or gender. He wrote a series of books encapsulating the essential meaning of the traditional Buddhist scriptures, devised comprehensive study and meditation programs to guide practitioners along the path to enlightenment, trained people from many countries as qualified teachers, and founded centers around the world where anyone who wished to could practice Kadampa Buddhism. Having given the Kadampa tradition a new lease of life, Geshe Kelsang renamed it the 'New Kadampa Tradition', or 'NKT'.
