Changes in attitudes of the German Moravians towards Africans started to take place in the late 1700s.
After worshiping together for a half-century or more, church leadership decided in 1816 to extend the old Strangers' Graveyard westward towards Church Street, to the south of Home Moravian Church. This site then became the first African Graveyard for all Africans, Moravian or not.
Six years later, in 1822, the congregation ceased worshiping together, and Africans in and around Salem became a mission of the newly-organized Female Missionary Society. Services were held in several places in the immediate area during the first year, including the Schuman farm ( Happy Hill
Finally, in 1823, the church approved the construction of a log church to be used as the location of worship, on a site adjacent to the African Graveyard. (Later, in 1861, a larger brick church was built nearby see St. Philips Church
"Thirty Negroes gathered to lay up the logs for the church for Negroes. The Female Missionary Society has with pleasure undertaken to bear the expense. All went off well." -Salem Diary, September 27, 1823
On the last Saturday in September in 1999, five local lodges of the Prince Hall Masons recreated the 1823 event by hand raising the first several logs of the reconstruction of this African Moravian Church. (See photo above, courtesy of Old Salem, showing the new Log Church, with its hand-hewn logs, which is currently settling and drying before being roofed and enclosed.)

TOPIC

BY KEYWORD:

The Unity of Brethren Church, often referred to as the Moravian Church, was founded during the 1400s in Moravia in central Europe. Several principles guided the members' beliefs. First was that the Bible was the only source of God's true word. Second, all church members must achieve holy perfection to attain God's blessing. Third, humans are naturally sinful. Finally, to be saved, one must live a Christian life based on God's word as found in the Bible. Not only that, but one must truly believe in both God and Jesus Christ to enter heaven. To make God's word easier for people to understand, the Moravians believed that the Bible and other religious texts should be written in their language. In 1501, the Moravians published the first hymnal in the language of the people. Before that, all religious writing had been in Latin, which only educated people could read or understand. The church grew quickly in both Moravia and Bohemia. By 1500 it had more than 200,000 members and 400 churches. But older, established churches feared and persecuted the Moravians for their more democratic message. By the late 1600s most Moravian churches stood idle from this oppression, but a revival began in 1722 after a small group of believers left Moravia for Saxony in modern-day Germany. In Saxony, the Moravians flourished. They became missionaries, converting many Europeans and then Americans, including Native Americans. Chief among their missionaries to the Indians were

Candle Tea The Moravian Candle Tea, regarded by many as the opening event of the Christmas Season in Winston-Salem, will be open to the public this year on Thursday, November 29, Friday, November 30, Thursday, December 6, and Friday, December 7 from 2:00 - 8:30 p.m. On Saturdays, December 1 and 8, the hours will be from 11:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. Please notice the extended hours for Saturdays. The Candle Tea will again be held in the historic Single Brothers' House, which was built on Salem Square in 1769.
Hostesses, in early Moravian costumes, will greet guests at the door and guide them through the Chapel, through the room where beeswax candles are being made, through the old kitchen where sugarcake and coffee are being served, and through the two rooms in the sub-basement where the Putz is on display. (The word "putz" is of Germanic origin and means "to decorate".) The two sections of this year's Putz include a Nativity scene surrounded by other Biblical scenes connected with the birth of our Lord, and a replica of Salem Square in the early 1900's with each tiny house constructed to the exact scale of the original building.
General admission is $3.00 for adults and $1.00 for children 12 and under. Mrs. Emily Fearnbach is the Chairman of this year's Tea.

In 1769, the British government granted 100,000 acres of land at "Esquimaux Bay" in Labrador to the Unitas Fratrum. During the 19th century there were between 30 and 40 missionaries on the coast of Labrador. For more information on the Moravian Church in Newfoundland visit Hans Rollmann's Religion, Society and Culture in Newfoundland and Labrador web site. The Moravian Church Originally known as the Unitas Fratrum, the Moravian Church traces its roots to 15th century central Europe, in what is now the Czech Republic. A Protestant episcopal church, it suffered severe persecution during the 17th century. However, in the 1720s a number of families which had continued the church's original traditions were given refuge in Saxony by Count Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf. Here, at a new community named Herrnhut, the Unitas Fratrum was renewed and revived. In the process it merged its older practices with Zinzendorf's Lutheran Pietism. Under his leadership, Moravian influence spread across Protestant Europe, and by the time of Zinzendorf's death in 1760, there were 13 Moravian settlements in Germany and Holland, and settlements and congregations in England, Ireland and Britain's North American colonies.

Home Moravian Church
Construction on the church, originally known as the Saal, was begun in May of 1798. The building was designed by Frederic William Marshall, who was the Oeconomus or Administrator of the Wachovia settlement. The plan called for a simple rectangular structure with an exterior dimension of 92' x 46' with a ceiling height of 26 feet. The walls were built of solid brick with a thickness of 2'-6". The interior of the Saal was furnished with simple wooden benches facing the minister's seat and table located on the north wall. A balcony was located on the west, south and east walls with the west balcony being built to accommodate the Tannenberg organ. The windows were of plain glass and were located on the north, west and south walls. The west windows remain until this day. By the late 1860's the congregation was beginning to outgrow the Sanctuary. In 1870 the building was renovated to provide more seating capacity. The benches were removed and new pews were installed facing the east wall. The southern portion of the balcony was enlarged and a similar section was added on the north wall. The organ remained on the west balcony. The old wooden supports for the balconies were replaced with cast iron posts. The sills of the windows on the north and the south walls were lowered about two feet, six inches and stained glass windows were installed. In the early part of the 1900's the congregation was again outgrowing the Sanctuary. Once again the Saal was renovated. In 1912 and 1913 most of the north wall was removed and an area for the minister, the choir and a new organ was built. The entire balcony was removed, along with the Tannenberg organ, and a new curved balcony was installed. The support posts from the 1870 renovation were retained. Curved pews were installed in the balcony and the lower part of the Sanctuary. New stained glass windows were also installed at this time.
