Nichiren Buddhism
Doctrines The Nichiren, Pure Land and Zen schools initially emphasised different facets of Tendai teachings, but they soon outgrew their 'parent', Tendai.
Nichiren (1222-1282), a learned monk and resolute devotee of the Lotus Sutra (Japanese; Myoho-Renge-Kyo or Hoke-Kyo), preached uncompromisingly against other 'evil' forms of Buddhism, including Zen, Shingon and Pure Land. His aim was to restore pure Tendai teaching, which focused on the Lotus Sutra. According to Chinese thought, the Buddha had gradually revealed more and more of the true Dharma during his life. In Nichiren's view, the Lotus Sutra was the only, not just the final, revelation of the truth.
For Nichiren, reciting the mystic phrase 'Namu Myoho Renge Kyo' ('Hail to the Lotus Sutra') was the quintessence of Buddhist practice. If adopted throughout the country it could transform Japan and then the world into a Buddha-land. Nichiren's teachings, though based on a sophisticated knowledge of the Buddhist scriptural tradition, are set out in the form of intriguing vernacular dialogues between a devotee of the Lotus Sutra and an unbeliever, and in letters sent by Nichiren to various disciples during his lifetime. Central to his teaching is the Tendai notion of 'three thousand worlds in one instant of thought'. This conveys the idea that at any moment we can experience hell or, by invoking the power of the Lotus Sutra, the highest enlightenment. Central to Nichiren's doctrine was a mission to convert the shogun, emperor and all the people of Japan to devotion to the Lotus Sutra.

Reform the Nichiren Buddhist Debate
This web site is devoted to bringing civility to the discussion of Nichiren Buddhism on the internet. I and all of those supporting the positions in the essay hope to protect and purify the online perception of Nichiren Buddhism in its various forms by proposing the following:
  • The disputants in the various inter-Nichiren debates should immediately agree to cease their angry, hateful rhetoric online and in every other forum.
  • The forums of the individual schools should be left to those individual schools unless a member of another school invites an individual to participate.
  • Participants in forums for those of more than one school (ecumenical forums) or as an invited guest in the forum of a particular school should behave in a courteous manner, humbly, politely, and unabusively stating his or her opinions on subjects of contention.
  • Attacks on persons not in a particular forum, besides being contrary to the above principles, should also cease in respect of the fact that the individual is not able to respond to them.
  • These propositions should be applied with the spirit that each individual and each school has the right to practice as it sees fit without interference from other individuals and schools, regardless of one's personal beliefs as to that school's truth or efficacy.

Analytical psychology and Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin
    by Erika Gsell
Foreword This paper should not be considered a scientific work, but simply the expression of a few ideas, supported by Buddhist and Jungian bibliography, and a "basis of discussion". Furthermore, as I unfortunately do not have any books in English, except the three works mentioned found on Internet - I was almost always unable to quote directly but had to summarize the main contents of the cited works. Finally, the language is certainly not at all perfect, however I hope it is at least understandable. Introduction In this brief paper I would like to compare some aspects of Buddhism, in the theoretical and practical approach of Nichiren Daishonin, with some aspects of Jungian analytical psychology. Searching on Internet I discovered that several other authors have already compared Buddhism with Jungian analytical psychology, thus confirming my "suspicion" that these two ways of spiritual and psychological development are somehow not only linked but also very similar in many aspects. Eric Pettifor (1) has, for example stressed the parallel between Zen Buddhism and Analytical Psychology, in the sense that, he writes, "both paths are transformational. The paradox in each of them is that the transformation is becoming more oneself, one's true self".

Members of the SGI practice the Buddhism taught by Nichiren , a 13th Century Japanese priest whose philosophy centered around the final teaching of the first historically recognized Buddha (known as Siddhartha Gautama or Shakyamuni Buddha ). This teaching, called the Lotus Sutra , declares that all living beings have the potential to attain enlightenment or Buddhahood. This responsibility is furthered by an understanding of the simultaneity of cause and effect. Each thought, word and deed has an immediate effect both on the individual and on his or her environment. The goal SGI members try to achieve is to manifest Buddhahood, or enlightenment, in their lives, which will tap their creative potential as individuals and, in so doing, create thriving and peaceful families, work places and communities. The eventual goal is, through the gradual "human revolution" of the individual, to create peace and prosperity in societies throughout the world.

Gautama Buddha Sutras The Lotus Sutra Nichiren ... Gongyo GAUTAMA BUDDHA
Gautama Buddha (Shakyamuni, jp.) lived twenty five hundred years ago. Anyone who wishes to know what sort of a man he was must peer at him through shrouds of time and thickets of legend. Many of the stories that have been preserved for us appear to tel1 the life and work of a real man; others are symbolic of the religious beliefs of the Buddhists and the Hindus, others are pure folklore, as old as humanity and lively with marvels and mirages.
The real miracle is this; that wisdom exists. It is inbuilt in the foundation of the mind, and though it is hardly noticed by ordinary people in their hurry to get on with their everyday affairs, there have been some extraordinary individuals who have noticed it. They have seen the shape of pure wisdom and have described it in simple language for the rest of us to build our lives upon. Gautama was one of these gifted men. The moral law he devised became the inspiration for many eastern civilizations, and people ended by assuming he must have been not a man but a god. His

    About the NSA Logo
he Nichiren Society of America (NSA) is a lay organization of Buddhists who base their spiritual beliefs on the teachings of Nichiren, a 13th Century Buddhist reformer from Japan. It is unaffiliated with any other religious, social, or political organization. Membership in our organization is quite simple. Anyone with an interest in Buddhism is welcome.
he purpose of NSA is to help people find out about and practice Nichiren Buddhism, to create and maintain a mutual support system wherein members can comfortably develop their faith without imposing limits, to assist members in introducing new people to this philosophy, to facilitate and encourage the study of Nichiren Buddhism, and to make available resources, such as reading materials, which accommodate and advance these goals.
ur basic unit is the local group. All decision-making occurs at this level based upon the conscience of the group. There is no national or regional structure giving direction to the local groups. The only NSA functions outside of the group level will be advisory and voluntary, for example in sharing suggestions for meeting formats, and maintaining communication channels such as a web site and Internet discussion groups. All groups will be financially independent.
SA does not have leaders or hierarchies. It does not have a rigidly defined set of doctrines. Our NSA practice is based upon the teachings of Nichiren, the Lotus Sutra, the Gohonzon (the mandala and focus of meditation) and Daimoku (Nam(u) Myoho Renge Kyo, the mantra we chant during meditation). We believe that it is up to individuals to find their own way within the Buddhism of Nichiren. NSA exists to offer a helping hand in the pursuit of the goal of Buddhism, which is "to cause all living beings to gain entry to the highest way and quickly attain Buddhahood."*

Nichiren asserted that every individual has the potential to become enlightened in his or her present lifetime. Buddhist practice is a vehicle of individual empowerment. Each person has within the power to overcome life's inevitable challenges, to live a life of value and become a positive influence in one's community, society and the world.
    Origins in India
Nichiren's philosophy is rooted in the teachings of Shakyamuni (Gautama Siddartha), the historical founder of Buddhism who lived in India some 2,500 years ago. His teachings were recorded as sutras and spread throughout Asia, giving rise to a number of distinct schools of Buddhism.
    Accessible to All
Nichiren lived in Japan during a tumultuous time of social unrest and natural disasters. The common people, especially, suffered enormously in this harsh feudal society. Appalled by this state of affairs, Nichiren, while a young priest, set out to find the solution to the suffering that surrounded him. After intensive study of the Buddhist sutras, he realized that the essence of the Buddha's enlightenment, and the means to bring an end to suffering and social turmoil, was found in the

    Prayer in Buddhism
Prayer is central to the practice of Nichiren Buddhism. SGI members often relate experiences of "offering earnest prayer," or "praying from the bottom of my heart." They also speak of having their prayers "answered." What do SGI members mean when they make such statements?
The Webster's Third International Dictionary defines prayer as "a solemn and humble approach to Divinity in word or thought, usually involving beseeching, petition, confession, praise, or thanksgiving."
In what ways does the Buddhist understanding of prayer accord with this definition, and how does it differ?
Prayer appears to be a universal human activity. There is evidence to suggest that humans have been engaged in some form of "prayer" since the earliest days of our species. As soon as humans developed a consciousness of their relative powerlessness before the forces of nature, the precariousness of their existence and their own mortality, they no doubt began giving expression to intense feelings of petition, praise or thanksgiving.

    http://www.middlewaypress.com/about_buddhism.html
Nichiren Buddhism is one of the foremost schools of Buddhist thought in the world today. It centers on one of the last teachings of the historic Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama or Shakyamuni. This teaching, called the Lotus Sutra, decares that all living beings, regardless of gender or intelligence, have the potential to attain "Buddhahood," a state of life characterized by compassion, courage, wisdom, joy and life force.
Thus people can use Nichiren Buddhism in an everyday, practical way, to both deal with the realities of their busy daily lives and also to actively engage with others and ultimately contribute to the betterment of society and the world at large.
