PERSPECTIVES SEMINARY IN THE CITY In February he preached at the 12th Annual PCA Western Regional Church Conference at All Nations Presbyterian Church in Oakland on the theme "Gospel Ministry in a Changing World." For his work, Smith has received several recent honors. He was awarded the “Agape Award” for 2002 from the women’s ministry of Shiloh Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. The award recognizes "men in ministry who have been willing to challenge the unfair treatment of women in ministry" that exists today. The award was presented during the inaugural conference for women ministers and musicians held at Shiloh Baptist Church. Allen Temple received a $500,000 Workforce Investment Act Grant for its job training programs for hard-to-serve individuals. The award was given during a special ceremony of the California Faith-Based Initiative held at Allen Temple. The recognition was made by California Governor Gray Davis. The Rev. Katie Choy Wong, director of admissions and instructor in ministry, addressed the East Bay Area American Baptist Women Ministries (ABW) Spring Rally at Church of the Valley in San Ramon, Calif. She was also a speaker for the recent East Bay Area American Baptist Churches of the West Family Night at First Baptist Church of Richmond.

The Roger Williams Fellowship of American Baptists
The Roger Williams Fellowship was founded in 1935 out of a need for a forum within the Northern Baptist Convention (at that time) where a variety of social and faith issues could be discussed with respect for diverse theological perspectives. The Fellowship welcomes laity and clergy of diverse backgrounds and perspectives who seek to discuss, study, and struggle with questions of conscience. The context of our mutual discernment is the exercise and pursuit of religious freedom. The RWF meets annually for a theological conference and at Biennial Meetings of the American Baptist Churches . Local breakfasts, area meetings, and gatherings at regional conventions are among the opportunities for relationship within the Fellowship. The Roger Williams Fellowship maintains strong relational ties with the Baptist Joint Committee on Public Affairs , the Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America, and the Baptist Alliance.

By Matt Kaufman W hen you drop your offering in the collection plate on Sunday, do you expect that you're helping to silence school prayer, oppose government aid to abstinence programs and fight the "religious right?" Bob Fischer didn't. So when he discovered the truth, he decided to do something about it. In 1997, the Rapid City, S.D., businessman learned that his church body-the North American Baptist Conference-was donating a portion of parishioners' giving to the Baptist Joint Committee on Public Affairs (BJC). That name didn't mean much to most of Fischer's church friends, or to most people outside Washington, D.C., where the group does its lobbying and legal work. But it meant something to him. UPDATE
