The Open Brethren
From The Brethren since 1870
by W.R. Dronsfeld The story of the Brethren, as told by Mr. A.Miller, closed in the 1870's and nearly a century has passed since then (1965). All the great movements of the Spirit of God have suffered much decline in the course of 100 years, and the Brethren have certainly been no exception. That which is committed to human responsibility always fails, but the Truth abides. The foundation of God stands sure, although iniquity may abound. In the following pages it is desired to trace briefly the history of the Brethren up to the present day. We will try to avoid paying unnecessary attention to details of controversies long dead, and rather concentrate on those matters, painful though many of them are, which have relevance to us in the present. A.Miller's History left the Brethren divided into two camps - the "Open" and the "Exclusive". A teacher of serious error might be refused by other meetings, but his local gathering could not be disowned. Hence those who were defiled by remaining in his meeting could still be received, providing they did not themselves hold or teach his views. The principle of independency must, of necessity, be in opposition to the scriptural principle that association with evil defiles. We do not desire, however, to be unduly critical of the Open Brethren, and must acknowledge that most of them are godly and faithful believers. We can thank God that they have not lost the Gospel, and their zeal in that direction has produced much fruit for the Lord. Large numbers of their missionaries have gone to other lands, pioneering independent meetings there. These brethren go out in dependence on the Lord and He does not fail them. The missionary magazine of the Open Brethren is called "Echoes of Service" and the Editors act as a channel for gifts. Consequently Open Brethren missionaries are often called "Echoes of Service" missionaries.

Church of the Brethren German Baptist Brethren Old German Baptist Brethren ... Lutheran Brethren The basic outline of this document was first compiled by Richard M. Judy of Dunker Springhaus Ministries, Youngstown, Ohio. It was then further researched to include commentary on each group, additional information, brief histories, reference links to other web sites, and then graphically enhanced for the Web, by Ron Gordon , Church of the Brethren Network Administrator. We hope this co-project will be helpful towards attaining a better perspective of the many Brethren groups, and especially a more keen understanding of their various subgroups. Your questions, suggestions, or any corrections to this outline are most welcome.

An Open Letter to Open Brethren
Miles J. Stanford May 1992 My dear Brethren brother Thank you for your edifying letter; I value you, among other Brethren correspondents. Your request that I evaluate Mr. William MacDonald's book, True Discipleship , is appreciated, to which I hereby accede. In using the term "Brethren," I refer to those of you who hold to the "open" policy of Mr. Muller, rather than the "closed" one of Mr. Darby. Quotes from Mr. MacDonald's book are in italics , and the material is considered from the dispensational standpoint. My comments will not involve extensive Scripture references, in light of your thorough grasp of the Word. When one who rightly divides the Word of truth encounters Dr. John MacArthur's book to the Church entitled The Gospel According to Jesus , he should, by the title alone, realize immediately that the book is disqualifiedthat it is composed of anti-dispensational, Synoptic-centered Covenant theology. And what of Mr. MacDonald's title

    http://www.histable.com/open_brethren.htm
Open Brethren History and principles ...........The Open Brethren developed as an offshoot of the Plymouth Brethren in the late 1840s in England as a result of a controversy over the reception of a man who had started to teach false teachings about the person of Christ. Those assemblies who received believers who were associated with this man but did not actually hold to his false teaching were designated "open" by the original set of assemblies. Their "open" principle of receiving those who did not hold to false teaching but would not separate from those who did was viewed as "independency" from the the original fellowship of assemblies. Open Brethren reject the teachings of the man who propagated false doctrine in the 1840's. See Open Brethren by W.R. Dronsfeld. Reception ............Reception to the Lord's Supper is by verbal confession of faith. An visitor who is not known may be invited to remember the Lord. Letters of reception are not usually required. Open Brethren do not generaly take a separated position regarding the evangelical or the neo-evangelical community. Strengths Gospel work, evangelism and missionarry work.
