Thu, 25 Jan 2001 Dear David,
Welcome to 'My Brethren'. I hope you will return from time to time and explore MB. I think there is much, especially in the Ministry group, that you will find of interest. Because of its general interest the major part of this reply is posted on Guests: My Answer 2: Divorce and Remarriage Yours in our Lord Jesus, Gordon. From: David Addison
Thu, 25 Jan 2001 Dear Gordon,
The relevant part of David's message is appended to Guests: My Answer 2: Divorce and Remarriage
  • I do remember one meeting where they all carried Darby translations and I felt out of place with my Scofield!
I presently live in Delhi NY which is about 75 miles northeast of Binghamton.
  • I am still convinced that the brethren approach to meeting is more scriptural than what is all around us.
    • I have not attempted to begin an assembly here, mainly for lack of other Christians to join in.
  • My family and I attend an Alliance Church where we teach and work with youth even though we are not members.

42. About Anthony Norris Groves
Islam. He was Anthony Norris Groves, who may rightly be regarded asthe founder of the missionary enterprise of the open brethren.

Anthony Norris Groves (1795-1853)
The following paragraph gives some scant details about A.N.Groves Below is an extract from a book about the early Plymouth Brethren "It was the year 1831. In the plague-stricken city of Baghdad, an ambassador of Christ stood by the death-couch of his young wife. Within two years of leaving their home in Exeter, and less than eighteen months in Baghdad, then a city of disease and iniquity, her course was run. This tragic event, which cast two motherless boys into the lap of an unveiled future, marked the laying of the first stone in the missionary outreach of the early Brethren. In the 160 years following, this structure has grown to dimensions stretching almost from pole to pole. The toilsome years in the land now called Iraq were productive of meagre spiritual fruit. A young man of 36 was being tested through the fire of affliction in a land not until that time visited by the Gospel since its capture by Islam. He was Anthony Norris Groves , who may rightly be regarded as the founder of the missionary enterprise of the Open Brethren.

http://jmahoney.com/indfunfam.htm
Independent Fundamentalist Family
Churches in this family flowed from the work of John Nelson Darby (1800-1882). He was an Anglican priest who came to reject the idea of a state church and sought an approach to faith that would be non-denominational. The movement he began in England in the 1820s attempted a more complete revival of early Christianity than either the Puritan or Wesleyan movements, which had come earlier. This new movement sought to literally recreate the Apostolic church through intense focus on the Bible. Darby’s key theological concept was “dispensationalism.” From his work came modern fundamentalism. Dispensationalism sees the Bible as a history of God's dealing with humanity in terms of various periods (dispensations) of history. There are different characteristics of the various periods and subdivisions, with different themes and issues apparent at different times. Based on this theory, the true church was seen as a faithful subgroup. Anyone who would foster a particular denomination was seen as acting contrary to the action of the Holy Spirit. Darby established assemblies of like-minded believers. They accepted no authority except the "charismatic" leadership of Darby.

England that later developed into the Exclusive Brethren and those in Bristol andBarnstaple, among others, that subsequently became known as open brethren.
http://webmail.mobap.edu/schulten/CovSem.Ref&Mod.paper.htm
Christian Brethren: A Brief Tracing of the Movements through Dublin, Plymouth, Bristol and Barnstaple in the Early Nineteenth Century Introduction BRETHREN (Plymouth) – In the 2 nd quarter of the 19 th century the State Churches in Great Britain were worldly and dead; the Dissenters were orthodox and cold; the great Evangelical Revival was on the wane . . . . It was in the midst of this state of things that the movement of Brethrenism originated.(1827). During the early nineteenth century several significant movements streamed through the history of the modern church re-charting a course that continues in sometimes greater but sadly more often lesser degrees to this present hour. “The great world-wide missionary movement is one of these. The Bible societies may be looked at collectively as another. And what is sometimes called “Brethrenism” is a third . . .” Some modern church historians, however, have characterized the Brethren as “an infamous and consistently misunderstood evangelical secessionist movement.” To many the Brethren are viewed as a product of a new brand of eschatology attributed to John Nelson Darby.

I Hated Those Who
Denied Eternal Security
By John Cooper
My name is John Cooper. I was brought up in the Open Brethren and was taught OSAS [once saved always saved] from an early age. I was converted at 8 years of age, was baptised and received into fellowship at 14. I started to preach at 17. All this time I never had any contact with anyone who denied OSAS, although I was aware that such people existed. While I was in my teens I became aware of the power of sin in my life and sought deliverance from it. I had no-one to turn to as everyone I knew appeared to take sin for granted as the normal Christian experience . For my part I was deeply distressed by my inability to please God as I knew I should. I was especially convicted by reading Jesus' words in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew's Gospel. It appeared to me that other Christians were not interested in holiness so long as they were saved . I yearned for freedom from sin. It was at this time that I noticed that OSAS was used as an excuse by some people to deliberately disobey clear commands of Scripture . I firmly believed in OSAS but had no answer to those who (in my view) misused the teaching in this way. I also found a certain comfort from OSAS myself in those times when I was sowing to the flesh, although I always bitterly regretted my sin later.

The Plymouth Brethren
The following page includes three papers written by Miles J. Stanford on the subject of the Plymouth Brethren (PBs)both the Open and Closed varieties. The Plymouth Brethren (often known throughout the world as Assemblies or Gospel Halls) are a small groups of Christians with a deep and rich history. The PBs should not be confused with any "Brethren" out of the Continental Free Church tradition, (such as the Church of the Brethren, Brethren Church, etc.), nor the Arminian Pentecostal Assemblies of God. For decades, the PBs reached out with their various needs to brother Miles Stanford by telephone and letter, yet often in pride and denial that they could be helped or ministered to by someone "outside" their Assembly system. However, it is often only an outsider who is in a position to evaluated conditions as they truly are, rather than how insiders represent them to be. Miles' burden was always that the PBs would discover the rich legacy of Pauline Dispensationalism established by the original founders of the movement. The green titles above and below are links to specific articles.

An Open Letter to the Brethren To the Beloved in Christ Jesus It is with a heavy heart that I feel compelled to write to you. Yes indeed, the hand of the Lord is heavy upon me and I can no longer remain silent. Even our blessed Saviour taught us to walk in the light because we are children of the light.
Brethren, the matter is this: Paul is on a major campaign to vilify me. He has written to you, and many others, claiming that I have left him because of my, as he brazenly puts it, "loving this present world." It is therefore my painful duty to expose the truth as it really is even if it may seem to some that I no longer hold Paul in the high esteem in which most still hold him in. I need to confess, and grief grips my heart as I mention this. I never imagined that I would see this day that my conscience would force me leave Paul, to put pen to paper and expose him and the many things that have been hidden from you brethren for a very long time. My earnest prayer (after many tears which attend this letter) is that this open letter to the Brethren would be used by Christ Himself to show you just how far Paul has moved from the Lord Himself and gone his own way. The language which I am going to use is mild in comparison with the harsh terms which he uses against others, including myself, who have finally come to their senses and left him.

Music From Hell!
The following article from the "Head of the Unregistered Union of Churches in Russia" appeared in "Life," dated May 21, 1992
For thirty years we have suffered intense persecution. Now freedom is bringing another great harm to our churches. This damage is coming from Christians in America who are sending rock music and evangelists accompanied by rock bands. Our young people do not attend those meetings because we have all committed not to participate in secular entertainment. This is a great burden to our hearts. Many come with Bible in hand and rock music. We are embarrassed by this image of Christianity. We do not know what words to use in urging that this be stopped. We abhor all Christian rock music coming to our country. Rock music has nothing in common with ministry or the service to God. We are very much against Christian Americans bringing to our country this false image of "ministry" to God. We need spiritual bread...not false cakes. It is true that rock music attracts people to the church, but not to Godly living. We were in prison for fifteen years for Christ's sake. We were not allowed to have Christian music, but ROCK MUSIC was used as a weapon against us day and night to destroy our souls. We could only resist with much prayer.
