AN OPEN LETTER TO THE FELLOWSHIP OF GRACE BRETHREN CHURCHES Dear Friends: I recently participated on a task force with my wife, Donna, through CE National on the subject of “middle adult” (mid-life) ministries. My involvement brought to mind the continued need for proper retirement planning, along with the goal of not allowing this need to become an obsession. Retirement planning, in fact, so dominates today’s Christian thinking that the risk of overkill is enormous. The fear of doing without in the future causes many Christians to rob God’s work of the very funds He has provided. God’s Word does not prohibit but rather encourages saving for the future, including retirement (Proverbs 6:6-11; 21:20), but the example of the rich fool, given by the Lord in Luke 12:16-20, should be a clear indication that God’s balance is “when in doubt—give; don’t hoard.” We savor the thought of retirement, don’t we? Because we have been hardworking and dedicated for so long in life, we tend to think it’s “our right” to thoroughly enjoy it. Though many mid-lifers are especially looking forward to retirement, most unfortunately will not have the means to do so due to a lack of adequate planning.

Open Letter in Response to the Church of the Brethren Action Regarding GLBT Ordination October, 2002
To: Church Leadership
From: The Justice and Community Committee of the Brethren Mennonite Council (BMC)
Re: 2002 Annual Conference Decision Dear Church Leader: At its 2002 Annual Conference, the Church of the Brethren delegate body voted to deny ordination to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals. At the BMC worship service following the passage of this business item, the devastation was evident, particularly among young adults. For many, the delegate action undermined the very integrity of the church and its stated commitment to justice and non-violence. Although it is not the common practice of BMC to issue position statements, the timing and content of this Annual Conference decision seemed particularly onerous. Attached is a response prepared by the Justice and Community Committee of BMC, the committee which addresses BMC/church relations. If you have any questions or would like to talk about any of the issues raised, we invite you to contact anyone on the committee. We wish you the courage to be a voice for justice.

Smucker It did not feel like I had a vacation this past summer. But it did begin with an unexpected emotional and spiritual high. The first week of June I was planning my ordination service, scheduled to take place on June 9 at Skyridge Church of the Brethren in Kalamazoo, Michigan. With a sense of great joy as well as numbness, I outlined with my pastor, Debbie Eisenbise, the components of a remarkable celebration; one that I never expected to occur for me in the denomination of my childhood. Earlier, on April 29, the Michigan District Board had approved my candidacy for ordination through an intentionally thoughtful discernment process. This group of risk-takers affirmed my call to ministry in seminary administration at Chicago Theological Seminary. It marked the first time that an openly gay man was received in ordained ministry in the Church of the Brethren. As I anticipated their decision, I was prepared for a negative outcome, not expecting that God would open the hearts and minds of the Michigan district board. I was shocked when I learned the results of their discussion, and I had no idea what the rest of summer had in store for me.

Introduction The Jims vs. Exclusive Brethren Current population of the Jims Development of the current ministry Shut up Out of fellowship Rules and Practices
Religious matters:
  • Only persons who are in full agreement with the doctrines and practices of the fellowship are allowed to be members. For instance, at the time of the 1970 Aberdeen separation in many cities all persons had to declare that they were 100 percent in agreement with J.Taylor Jr. This was required even if the person had no knowledge of the facts of the dispute. A person was in agreement with J.Taylor Jr. or was put out. In cities where this complete polling was not practiced, any person whom the leadership might have suspicions about would be asked to declare themselves as being 100 percent with him.
The meetings are usually held as follows:
Sunday
At 6 a.m. the Lord's supper (communion) and worship meeting. These are small gatherings of up to thirty to forty people (in a city there could be many of these small sub-gatherings for the Lord's supper and the Monday prayer meeting). All persons partake of the bread and wine even if they are too young to be an intelligent believer in Christ. A child partakes as soon as it can eat solid foods. The men only participate audibly in praise and worship. Hymns to be sung in the Jims fellowship are always suggested by the women. A man never suggests a hymn to be sung. However, only a man can actually start the singing. They have no musical instruments in the meeting hall. All participation is voluntary, the brethren claim that each person is led by Christ in their participation. All persons over about 12 years are expected to participate. Little children are encouraged to participate before that age but patience is exercised toward these little ones.

An Open Letter to the Brethren from Demas By Kjell Olsen To the Beloved in Christ Jesus It is with a heavy heart that I feel compelled to write to you. Yes indeed, the hand of the Lord is heavy upon me and I can no longer remain silent. Even our blessed Saviour taught us to walk in the light because we are children of the light. Brethren, the matter is this: Paul is on a major campaign to vilify me. He has written to you, and many others, claiming that I have left him because of my, as he brazenly puts it, "loving this present world." It is therefore my painful duty to expose the truth as it really is even if it may seem to some that I no longer hold Paul in the high esteem in which most still hold him in. I need to confess, and grief grips my heart as I mention this. I never imagined that I would see this day that my conscience would force me leave Paul, to put pen to paper and expose him and the many things that have been hidden from you brethren for a very long time. My earnest prayer (after many tears which attend this letter) is that this open letter to the Brethren would be used by Christ Himself to show you just how far Paul has moved from the Lord Himself and gone his own way. The language which I am going to use is mild in comparison with the harsh terms which he uses against others, including myself, who have finally come to their senses and left him.

Metro Tamils open homes for brethren found at sea

By Joe Serge Toronto Star
Metro Tamils say they're ready to help Sri Lankans settle in Metro after they were rescued Monday by Canadian fishermen from two drifting lifeboats off Newfoundland.
About 60 of the castaways, who are now said to number 155 instead of 152, are expected to come to Metro. The rest will go to Montreal.
Gnana Thevathasan, president of the Tamil Eelam Society - a cultural and immigrant-aid organization for Metro's estimated 4,000 Tamils - said the community will welcome the Sri Lankans into their homes and provide clothing, food and other basic needs until they can take care of themselves.
Initially, the society will likely place them in the homes of Metro Tamils in groups of five, until more homes are found.
"Some will be taking care of bachelors. Others, including me, will take families into our homes," he said.
Living allowance
Two society members, Arul Aruliah and Kasi Jeyarajah, were recruited as interpreters by immigration authorities and now are in St. John's, Nfld., with the newcomers, he said.
Kerry Reade, an official with immigration's settlement branch, said once it was determined that some Sri Lankans would be coming to Metro, he hurriedly organized a series of meetings with community leaders, and they expressed a willingness to help.

INTRODUCTION The China Episode was a brief but important period in the history of the brethren.
  • The enthusiasm and joy of brethren caused by learning of, and briefly linking on with, a work of God in China which appeared to be based on the truth
    • was replaced by the humbling discovery that they had laid hand too quickly on those whose 'open' principles were completely unacceptable.
  • This experience served to restrain any tendency to compromise the scriptural principles of gathering and separation to which they were traditionally committed,
    • but also, in measure, to check the outreach to other believers that had always characterized them despite their abhorrence of the prevalent sectarianism, and the trauma of earlier divisions.
The Recovery and Maintenance of the Truth
    • That account being out of print, Kingston Bible Trust published A Further Review of Recovery to the Truth and its Maintenance (1827-1997) by B. W. Burton.

March 19-22, 1999 The US Open has again presented the world of riders a weekend of eternal youth. This place in Vermont brings images of heritage, colonialism and tradition that helps feed riders recent roots and fuel the passion that sometimes can be hard to find amidst today's hype. "This attitude easily had me reveling in my youth all weekend and eventually brought out the Bostonian booze scowl I've been supressing for too long..." It was here, and not so long ago, that Yankee innovation inspired Jake Carpenter to find a new way to slide on snow. It is here where for the past 17 years, snowboarders have gathered to present their piece to this great runaway train. It is here that riders know they will always find a history, a camaraderie and a common stance of unity. Terje Todd Richards said last year, "we already have our Olympics, it's called the US Open." The truth that rings through Todd's words emphasizes the unyielding fight to maintain our soul, community and history. The US Open brings these element together with a worldwide, yearly pilgrimage to this sacred spot in Stratton, Vermont. You know it's not the snow, money or recognition, but the pride, heritage and celebration. For some it might be the chance to brush up against their hero or maybe to get a signature on their lid. For others, it is the reuniting of old friends and exchanging of stories. For all, though, it is a chance to witness the yearly powerful realization of our sport's evolution.

The Unity of the Brethren
A Historical Sketch
The Unity of the Brethren traces its roots to the work of the reforming priest, John Hus, martyred in 1415. Hus was concerned with bringing the church back to its spiritual roots and removing distracting influences that tradition and custom had added over the years. Hus was concerned with providing the scriptures in the language of the people, instead of the church Latin version which only the educated and clergy had the opportunity to learn. Hus also desired the church to surrender much of the secular power and material possessions it had accumulated so that its spiritual mission could proceed unhindered. The reforms that Hus suggested met with tremendous opposition from church authorities, although they were popular with the common people. The execution of Hus by the church in 1415 incensed the people of the Czech lands and led to the development of an alternative church, the Unity of the Brethren in 1457. The Unity of the Brethren grew in influence until it was the predominant religious force in the Czech lands. The later reformers Martin Luther and John Calvin had several contacts with the Brethren in the course of their ministries. While the Anabaptists were opposed by the Roman Catholics and other Protestants of the time, the Brethren offered them sanctuary in their homeland. The level of religious conflict in Europe grew until open warfare became inevitable. In 1620, early in the Thirty Years War, the Protestant forces in the Czech lands suffered a devastating defeat that led to the imposition of the Counter-Reformation by the Roman Catholic Church. During this time, Protestants were forced either to leave the country and become refugees or to practice their beliefs in secret.
