Understanding Orthodox Christianity by Jim Forest
One visitor to our parish St. Nicholas of Myra Russian Orthodox Church in Amsterdam asked me during the coffee gathering after the Liturgy "if two hours wasn't just a little on the long side for prayer" and "was it really necessary to say 'Lord have mercy' so many times." On the other hand, he was glad he came because "it was like a living museum, like Williamsburg, only here you get to see what the church was like back in the time of Constantine." The surprising thing was that he returned the following Sunday and, back home in Chicago, eventually became a member of an Orthodox parish. A Protestant visitor to the parish told me she felt like she was "meeting cousins I didn't know I had." She had read about Orthodox Christianity and knew about the Great Schism of 1054 when the bishops of Rome and Constantinople excommunicated each other, "but it just seemed like some detail of history." She was amazed by the intense atmosphere of worship during the service. "I learned today that Christian worship doesn't have to be a classroom with hymn breaks." In her own parish, she said she had once suggested to her pastor he put up a blackboard behind the pulpit "because I always imagine it there anyway." Not everyone comes away from a first visit to an Orthodox church with positive things to say about it. It's easy to find parishes where it's a major asset to speak a language which was never spoken by anyone you ever met before: Greek, Russian, Romanian, Serbian or Arabic. Many parishes are not only places of worship but ethnic enclaves where national traditions are maintained and in which a great effort is made to keep the mother tongue alive. Yet look around and you will find in many "ethnic" parishes people whose hair or complexion or last name suggests this isn't just a national club (our Russian parish has about ten nationalities worshiping together), while in a growing number of parishes, those born in Orthodox Christian families or cultures are a minority. There are more and more Orthodox parishes in America where the main or only language of worship is English.

Eastern Orthodox Christianity: A Chronology
301: The Kingdom of Armenia becomes the first state to adopt Christianity as its official religion. 313: Emperor Constantine issues the Edict of Milan, legalizing Christianity in the Roman Empire. 325: Constantine calls the First Ecumenical Council at Nicea to condemn the Arian heresy, which had taught that the Son was inferior to the Father. 330: Constantine dedicates the city of Byzantium as the eastern capital of the Empire or "New Rome," renaming it Constantinople after himself. 381: The Second Ecumenical Council at Constantinople publishes the text of the Nicene Creed. 431: The Third Ecumenical Council at Ephesus condemns the Nestorian heresy and approves the veneration of the Virgin Mary as Theotokos (God-Bearer or Mother of God). The Nestorians go into exile in the Persian Empire and become the Assyrian Orthodox Church of the East. 451: The Fourth Ecumenical Council at Chalcedon condemns the Monophysite heresy and affirms that Christ had both a divine and a human nature. The Armenian, Coptic, Ethiopian, and Syrian Orthodox Churches would remain Monophysite; the Greek Orthodox church and the Western church adopted the Chalcedonian or Dyophysite position. This Council also gives Constantinople equal standing with "Old" Rome. 529: Byzantine Emperor Justinian closes the pagan Philosophical Academy in Athens.

Subject: converting Posted by: asnowmonkey Time: 12:02 am. ive been trying to become a catacumen here in Fairbanks, AK but the church is small and not very helpful in this department. I made it known to the Father about a year ago and its yet to happen. This is a Russian Orthodox Church and it suits my preference to be married clergy as the Deacons and Priests can be married yet they dont receive certain monk responsibilities and privileges or something like that. Yet I like the Syrian Orthodox more so in tradition with St. Isaac.
Question:
1.is it normal to take this long in setting a time for me to come into the church? I have a Christian middle name Aaron, I've been baptized in the S. Baptist church and have always been a believer and passionately so. They even let my participate in Pascha. The bottom line is that i want to be connected to the Apostolic succession and move on from my protestant denials etc. I want to be connected.
2.i hear that there are two schools/orgs of Orthodox. Is your church in communion with St. Hermans of Alaska and would my catachism be valid with other Orthodox churches?

All Saints of North America
In looking up more information about Xenia Pokrovsky after reading about the upcoming Icon Writing Workshop in Lexington, I found a site that shows the Synaxis Of All Saints Who Have Shone Forth In North America icon that she wrote in 1994 for Metropolitan Theodosius. The site has closeups of the saints faces and events depicted clearer version that includes nice closeups of St. Raphael of Brooklyn. Synaxis of Saints Who have Shone Forth in North America icon by the hand of Diane Plaskon Koory, which appears to be quite similar, but with a broader color palette. By the way, work on the High Bridge Rail-trail , lenten services, and some extra hours at my day job have led to the recent lag between postings. More on all of those later. The Beliefs of Orthodox Christianity Home What is a Cult? The Characteristics of Cults The Beliefs of Orthodox Christianity ... Print this page
For the last two thousand years, the Christian Church has held certain beliefs to be vital to one's faith. While there is some doctrinal disagreement within the three branches of Christendom -Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Protestant- there is a general agreement among them as to the essentials of the faith. Whatever disagreement the church may have among its branches, it is insignificant compared to the heretical non-Christian beliefs of the cults. We offer this section as a yardstick to compare the errant beliefs of the cults.
The Doctrine of Authority
When it comes to the matter of final authority there is agreement among the major branches of Christianity with regard to the divine inspiration of the Old and New Testaments. However, the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox branches of the church go somewhat beyond the Bible as to their source of authority.
Roman Catholic The historic Roman Catholic Church accepts the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments as the inspired Word of God. They also accept the Apocrypha as being inspired of God. Further, they consider church tradition just as authoritative as the Scriptures. (In a previous work, we have dealt with reasons why we do not accept the Apocrypha as sacred Scripture Answers, Here's Life Publishers, 1980, pp. 36-38.)

User comment on article: A Christian Boom
Submitted by Karen Silver November 26, 2002 at I agree with you that there is a basic disconnect between the more liberal Northern Christianity and the more "doctrinal" and "orthodox" Christianity of the South. This is true, not only in the US, but in the world as well. The Anglicanism of Africa is nothing like that of Europe or the Episcopal Church in the US. The Catholicism of the barrio is not the Catholicism of the US, or even the more intensely "Irish" church of the US. Even the Southern Baptists who live up North are less doctrinaire than those in Alabama.
I think the schism, when it occurs, will be more de facto (it already is that) than de jure.
Karen Note: Opinions expressed by commentators do not necessarily reflect the views of Daniel Pipes.

    60. Orthodox Christianity Compared To Other Beliefs
Works and grace? orthodox christianity AS, FIRST OF ALL, ACKNOWLEDGING STATEOF SIN AND REPENTANCE. The orthodox christianity namely alleges, it HAS IT.
    http://members.tripod.com/golenkov/orthodox.htm
Alexander Golenkov, golenkov@mail.ru Back to INDEX * Western Christianity agrees that Jesus is Son of God but does it not dogmatically In this little difference of the grammatical form between words "sav ing " and "sav ... " is the whole basic difference in understanding Salvation between Orthodox Christianity and the Protestantism
Could you please describe the most basic differences in Russian Christian Theology and say Evangelical or Southern Baptist beliefs ? Such as who is Jesus? Who is God? What is salvation? Reconciliation of man with God? ... Works and grace? ORTHODOX CHRISTIANITY AS,
    FIRST OF ALL,
ACKNOWLEDGING STATE OF SIN AND REPENTANCE "...Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand."

[Mt.4:17] First of all, you have to know that, differently from the Western Protestantism, what's usually called now in Russia as "Orthodox Christianity" is in a very appalingly terrible state. And if you would experience it from inside, you would probably say that it is something having much more to do with, say, fascism rather than actually Christianity. Nevertheless, it is bitter truth. The Orthodox Christianity nowadays in Russia is more often understood as a subject of national pride and "political card" rather than any Evangelical truth. That is most obvious difference from "Evangelical or Baptist beliefs". But the TRUE ORTHODOX CHRISTIANITY is such that ACCEPTS BOTH SIDES and starts always with NEGATIVE SPEAKING OF ONESELF and POSITIVE SPEAKING OF OTHERS. That is why I have started from negative.
