as two sides of the abyss... Russian (PO-RUSSKI) 1. Humanism and religion as two dialectical halves. Humanism may be rightfully called a RELIGION of present day Western civilization (or, "something in place" of religion), "moving ideology" standing behind all in it. Namely by it - and engendered by it values of "Human Rights" and "Democracy" - the Western civilisation has been justifying itself in collision with any other: say, "Eastern", be it in a sense of not so long-ago Communist or today's hard-line fundamentalist "Muslim" (the confrontation with first one of which in a form of "Cold War" has now "switched over" to the second, what's more and more often called as "War of Civilisations"...). But, to say the truth, they are - dialectical halves. One of them can not be properly understood without the other (one of them even NEEDS other): 1.) Without such its "other part" humanism usually regarded (in "popular conscience") as simply "good", "humane" attitude to all;
2.) While without such "humane attitude to all" religion is ... ... ...

Orthodox Christianity
versus Biblical Christianity
In the following I respond to some statements made by those who associated themselves with the "Orthodox Church" representing its teachings and practices. Some Orthodox Christian leaders have responded disagreeing that such sources represent their own perspective, whom I also give a say through the links found at the bottom of the page. And if there is any other Orthodox Christian leader who would also like to critique this page let me know. I can add on material. First of all concerning the term "Orthodox", every Christian and every institutional form of Christianity reckons their own theology to be most Biblical. But the fact that there are diversity of beliefs among Christians reveals that someone has to be mistaken. (In fact even within the Orthodox Church there are a diversity of opinions as to what constitutes Orthodox theology and practice.) And though this particular group may call itself "Orthodox", that doesn't mean that its beliefs are necessarily "orthodox" from a Biblical standpoint, but rather that they are "orthodox" in their own mind. But Orthodox Christianity and Catholicism, being ultra-institutionalize forms of Christianity, suffer similar shortcomings when they purport to represent Biblical Christianity. But as I said not all Orthodox Christians hold to these positions.

Eastern Orthodoxy
(Redirected from Orthodox Christianity Eastern Orthodox Christianity (or "Eastern Orthodoxy") is, according to Orthodox Christians, the original form of Christianity . The Church was founded on the Day of Pentecost, AD , and those that joined on that day "continued in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, the breaking of bread, and the prayers" (Acts 2:42). It traces continuous apostolic succession back to the five major centers of Christianity in the early church: Rome Jerusalem Antioch Alexandria , and Constantinople . Since 1054 AD it is separated from the Roman Catholic Church (see Great Schism ), because it considers the

What is Orthodox Christianity? (From a brochure that you will find in the Narthex of the church) In Greek, the earliest common language of the Christian Church in her Eastern Mediterranean birthplace - the word "orthodox", was actually two words: "ortho" and "doxa". The Greek word "ortho" may be defined by concepts that can be captured only by the use of several English words:
  • straight
  • correct
  • proper
  • right
  • true
To help us recall this set of ideas we may think of the English word "orthodontist", a dentist who specializes in straightening or correcting our teeth. The Greek word "doxa" may also be defined through the use of several English words:
  • worship
  • teaching
  • practice
  • glory
  • faith
To help us recall "doxa", think of the familiar religious term, "doxology", meaning the worshipful giving of faithful praise to the Holy God (e.g. ..."Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.") What does the word "Orthodox" mean?

Russian Orthodox Christianity: A Living Legacy
With Reception and Tour of St. Nicholas Cathedral
In Collaboration with St. Nicholas Cathedral
Mon., Jan., 27March 3, 6 p.m.; Mon., March 17, 7 to 9:30 p.m.
One of the largest Christian churches in the world, and heir to the early church and Byzantine traditions, the Russian Orthodox faith is relatively unknown in the West. In centuries-old practice, Orthodox worship unites theological concepts, liturgical rituals, iconography, and music to create a bridge between humanity and God. In this course, scholars and artists focus on the history, spirituality, and sacred art of the Russian Orthodox faith. Through slide-illustrated lectures and a study tour of St. Nicholas Cathedral, highlighted by choral music, participants experience and learn about the rich aesthetic and religious traditions of the living Orthodox faith.

A HISTORY OF ORTHODOX CHRISTIANITY IN AUSTRALIA INTRODUCTION NINETEENTH CENTURY CONSTANTINOPOLITAN ORTHODOX IN AUSTRALIA RUSSIAN ORTHODOX IN AUSTRALIA ... CONCLUSION INTRODUCTION Unlike Orthodox Christianity in North America, which began as a mission in then Russian America (modern Alaska), the presence of Orthodoxy in Australia was due to immigration and settlement of peoples from "traditionally" Orthodox countries: Greece, the Balkans, the Middle East and Eastern Europe, including Russia. TOP NINETEENTH CENTURY The first Orthodox Church service to be celebrated in Australia occurred during Easter, 1820, off the Australian Coast (Sydney Cove, Kirrabilli Point, still called Russian Point today), on board a Russian vessel by it's chaplain, Priest-monk Dionisii. Russian ships would make periodic visits at Australian ports while on long voyages, in this case a group of 4 ships under Captain Bellinghausen exploring the Antarctic and going around the world in 1819 - 1821. The journal of Captain Bellingshausen records that during that time the Byzantine liturgy was celebrated in all its glory - colorful vestments (ceremonial garments worn by priests), church vessels, choral singing and incense. TOP CONSTANTINOPOLITAN ORTHODOX IN AUSTRALIA (Predominantly Greek-speaking Orthodox and those of Greek background) The first Greek Orthodox migrants to come to Australia, so it is believed, were convicts like those from the United Kingdom. In 1829 seven young Greek sailors, allegedly convicted of piracy in Malta, were transported to New South Wales. When Governor Bourke remitted their sentences in 1836, five returned to Greece, but two - Antonius Manolis and Ghicas Bulgaris - decided to stay. Greeks, like others from around the world, were drawn to Australia in the 1850's by the discoveries of gold and by the end of the 19th century, there were sufficient numbers to establish parishes in Sydney and Melbourne.

    Introducing the Orthodox Church
The Eastern Orthodox Church is characterised by its continuity with the Apostolic Church, and follows the faith and practices defined by the first seven Ecumenical Councils . Other councils are also accepted as reflecting the same original faith. The word "Orthodox" signifies both "right believing" and "right worshipping", and so the Orthodox Church recognises itself as the bearer of an uninterrupted living tradition of true faith lived out in worship. Since World War I, millions of eastern Europeans were dispersed in various countries where Orthodoxy had previously not existed. The Russian revolution of 1917 AD, for instance, provoked a massive emigration, which included intellectuals, theologians and clergy. After World War II, a huge Greek emigration occurred in western Europe, South Africa, America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. St Andrew's Theological College in Sydney, New South Wales, is the most significant educational institution of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia. Founded in 1986, the College enjoys full accreditation as a tertiary establishment and is a full member of the Sydney College of Divinity.

Melania the Elder (grandmother of Melania the Younger) founded monasteries and traveled from Spain to Rome to Egypt to Jerusalem, in contact with such leaders as Jerome and Paula and Augustine of Hippo. Melania the Younger Better known than her saintly grandmother, she talked her husband into celibacy after their second child died. They gave their immense fortune to found monasteries and do other good works, and left Rome ahead of the Visigoth invasions, going on pilgrimage to and settling in Jerusalem.

The Orthodox Faith. Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North South America Departmentof Communications (212) 5703528 10 East 79th Street New York, New York 10021.
    http://www.gomona.org/About_Orthodox_Christianity/body_about_orthodox_christiani
The Orthodox Faith Orthodoxy holds that the eternal truths of God's saving revelation in Jesus Christ are preserved in the living Tradition of the Church under the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Scriptures are at the heart of the Tradition and the touchstone of the faith. While the Bible is the written testimony of God's revelation, Holy Tradition is the all-encompassing experience of the Church under the abiding guidance and direction of the Holy Spirit. Essentially, Orthodox Christians consider that their beliefs are very similar to those of other Christian traditions, but that the balance and integrity of the entire Apostolic faith once delivered to the Saints has been preserved inviolate.
We believe that God is One in substance and Triune in persons. We worship One God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity, neither confusing the
persons nor dividing the substance. Creation is the work in time of the Blessed Trinity. The world is not self-created, neither has it existed from eternity, but it is the product of the wisdom, the power, and the will of the One God in Trinity. God the Father is the prime cause of creation and God the Son and God the Holy Spirit took part in creation, God the Son perfecting creation and God the Holy Spirit vivifying creation.
We believe that Our Lord Jesus Christ is truly God. He is Jesus, that is, the Savior and Christ, the Lord's Anointed, a Son not created of another substance, as is the case with us, but a Son begotten of the very substance of the Father before all time, and thus consubstantial with the Father. He is also truly man, like us in every respect, except sin. The denial either of His divinity or of His humanity constitutes a denial of His incarnation and of our salvation. The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father. The faith of the Church about the procession of the Holy Spirit was confirmed by the Second Ecumenical Council, which added to the Creed the following clause: "And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of life, who proceedeth from the Father." The Church is the holy institution founded by our Lord Jesus

O RTHODOXY is that form of Christianity which gives "right glory" or "right worship" to God the Holy Trinity. Orthodoxy is the Christian Church, in succession to the Patriarchs, Prophets, and Priests of the Old Testament, which was founded by our Lord Jesus Christ when He Ordained His Apostles and sent the Holy Spirit upon the faithful gathered in Jerusalem at Pentecost. The followers of the Way were first called Christians at Antioch; and the Christians were first called Catholics in a letter of St. Ignatius of Antioch in about the year AD 98. The Orthodox are the original Christians, the first Catholics, the Church of the Apostles, and the Community of the New Testament.
The Western Churches, including that of Rome, were part of the unity of Orthodoxy through the whole of the first 1,000 years. Rome only separated from the unity of the church by making extraordinary claims for the earthly powers of her patriarch (Pope) at the beginning of the 11th century and completed the break with the Orthodox by the 13th century. The usual date of the "great schism" is given as AD 1054. The ancient churches of Jerusalem, Antioch, Alexandria, and Constantinople are all Orthodox. About 250 million people now living are members of the Orthodox churches around the world with about 5 million in the USA.
