Pentecostal Family Churches The Assemblies of God (General Council of the Assemblies of God) General Notes The Assemblies of God is the largest denomination of what are collectively called the “Pentecostal” Churches. A core belief of the Assembly of God Churches is that the charismatic experience of Pentecost and the early Christian Church is essential and continues today. The primary expression of that experience is glossolalia, or speaking in tongues. The Bible is interpreted literally and is seen as the primary source of all Christian religious truth. Individual congregations are loosely affiliated and may differ widely in specific practices and details of living out the Christian faith. The Assemblies of God has no official stand on most issues. There is a strong belief in finding direction on particular issues through prayer, seeking guidance from the Bible, and by direct inspiration from God. Specific Religious Practices Sunday is seen as the Lord’s Day and should be a day of worship and rest. Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas are observed but with no special required celebration. Baptism by immersion and Holy Communion are seen as “ordinances of the church” rather than as sacraments (defined as communicating God’s grace). Holy Communion is usually celebrated once per month. Understanding of Healing Direct healing by God and deliverance from sickness is seen as the privilege of all believers. Members pray for the sick with the laying on of hands and anointing with oil. While standard medical care is usually sought there is at times a sense of opposition between faith and medical science.

Bishop Paul Alexander Bowers was born and reared in Oxford, Pennsylvania. After his high school graduation he relocated to Columbus, Ohio, where he attended Aenon Bible College. He graduated from the Aenon Bible College in 1951 and received a Bachelor of Theology Degree. He also graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1964, and received a Bachelor of Science Degree. Bishop Bowers taught in the Cincinnati Public School System for over 5 years. He retired from teaching in 1968 to dedicate his time to the ministry. Bishop Bowers served as Chairman of the Ohio District Council of the Pentecostal Assemblies of The World, from 1976. to 1992. During his tenure in office, he built a 100 Bed Nursing Home at the ODC Campground in Zanesville, Ohio. Also at the Campground, he built a 1,200 seated, air-conditioned Worship Center, a fully-equipped cafeteria which seats 500 people and also built a dormitory which can house 100 people. This Campground serves as a meeting and retreat facility. Bishop Bowers served as the Diocesan Bishop of the Carolina Council of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World from 1976 to 1996. Under his twenty year leadership, the number of churches in this Council increased from 30 to 62 churches.

Senior Pastor Bishop Vanuel C. Little, Sr. Born in a small town of Panola, Alabama on July 6, 1933 to the proud parents of Reverend and Mrs. Andrew Little, Sr. He has five sisters and five brothers. He left the dusty fields of Alabama and journeyed northward to Chicago, Illinois where he graduated from the Englewood High School. Bishop Little has been married to the lovely Dr. Alice M. Little for forty-one years. They are the proud parents of three anointed children: Ada, Chuck, & Victor. They are also the proud grandparents of nine (9) grandchildren. He is honored to be his children's natural father, as well as "father in the gospel". All three of their children are preachers and labor with him in the gospel. Bishop Little was baptized in Jesus' Name for the remission of sins, and received the Holy Ghost evidenced by speaking in tongues on November 10, 1955. He became a member of the Apostolic Church of God in Chicago, Illinois pastored by the Honorable Bishop Arthur M. Brazier for over 20 years, and Assistant Pastor for 14 years. He also served as Choir Director and Altar Worker. For over seven years, he traveled extensively as a National Evangelist. During his evangelical experience on the field, he baptized his ninety-seven (97) year old grandmother in Jesus' Name and she received the Holy Ghost. As he continued to lift up Christ, his mother, father, sisters, brothers, nieces, and nephews were baptized in Jesus' Name, and received the power of the Holy Ghost. Bishop Little has made a tremendous impact in the lives of his entire family.
