In this brief introduction, we want to tell you some of the reasons our congregants have selected Congregation Darchei Noam. • Reconstructionist Judaism Reconstructionists believe that Judaism is an "evolving religious civilization." In one way it is more liberal than Reform Judaism - the movement does not believe in a personified deity that is active in history and does not believe that God chose the Jewish people. Reconstructionist Judaism
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Reconstructionist Judaism is a denomination of Judaism characterized by:
  • The belief that an individual's personal autonomy generally overrides traditional Jewish law and custom , yet also holding that one's practices must take into account communal consensus. This leads to a somewhat more traditional set of observances than seen in Reform Judaism A positive attitude toward modern culture. The belief that traditional rabbinic modes of study, as well as modern scholarship and critical text study, are both valid ways to learn about and from Jewish religious texts. A non-fundamentalist method of teaching about Jewish principles of faith , along with the belief that no Jew needs to accept all, or any, principles of faith.

Who is a Reconstructionist Jew?
A Reconstructionist Jewish has strong commitments both to tradition and to the search for contemporary meaning. Reconstructionists encourage all Jews to enhance their own lives by reclaiming our shared heritage and becoming active participants in the building of the Jewish future.
The Evolving Religious Civilization of the Jewish People
Reconstructionists define Judaism as the evolving religious civilization of the Jewish people. By "evolving" we mean that Judaism has changed over the centuries of its existence. The faith of the ancient Israelites in the days of Solomon's Temple was not the same as that of the early rabbis. And neither of those faiths was the same as that of our more recent European ancestors. Each generation of Jews has subtly reshaped the faith and traditions of the Jewish people. Reconstructionist Jews seek to nurture this evolution. We see it as the lifeblood of Judaism, the power that allows Judaism to continue as a dynamic tradition in every age. By "religious" we mean that Judaism is the means by which we conduct our search for ultimate meaning in life. God

A prayer composed by Mordecai Kaplan in 1926 for the dedication of the new headquarters of the Society for the Advancement of Judaism (SAJ), the following were included in the Sabbath prayerbook as "The Criteria of Jewish Loyalty." THE THIRTEEN WANTS
  • We want Judaism to help us overcome temptation, doubt and discouragement.
  • We want Judaism to imbue us with a sense of responsibility for the righteous use of the blessings wherewith God endows us.
  • We want the Jew so to be trusted that his yea will be taken as yea, and his nay as nay.
  • We want to learn how to utilize our leisure to best advantage, physically, intellectually, and spiritually.
  • We want the Jewish home to live up to its traditional standards of virtue and piety.
  • We want the Jewish upbringing of our children to further their moral and spiritual growth, and to enable them to accept with joy their heritage as Jews.
  • We want the synagogue to enable us to worship God in sincerity and in truth.
  • We want our religious traditions to be interpreted in terms of understandable experience and to be made relevant to our present-day needs.
  • We want to participate in the upbuilding of Eretz Yisrael as a means to the renaissance of the Jewish spirit.

    Reconstructionism at a glance...
Reconstructionists define Judaism as more than a religion. For us it is a civilization encompassing history, literature, art and music, land and language.
Our religious tradition is the reflection of our ancestors' search for meaning, purpose and value. In our own search, we are egalitarian, participatory, and open to varying viewpoints.
Belonging to the Jewish people comes before behaving or believing through our shared past and through our communal experience of worship, study and celebration, we affirm our sense of belonging.
We are respectful of traditional Jewish practice but also open to new interpretation and forms of religious expression; tradition has "a vote but not a veto."
Our diverse views of God share an emphasis on godliness rather than on the supernatural. We value that power in the universe which infuses all of creation with a sense of transcendence and impels us to improve the world and ourselves.
We believe we are involved in the evolution of Judaism right now, and are responsible for shaping the spiritual and cultural legacy we will leave to future generations.
Perhaps you are a Reconstructionist and just don't know it.

    Reconstructionist Judaism
What is Reconstructionist Judaism? We believe Judaism is an evolving religion and that the Jewish people evolve over time. We don't believe G-d chose the Jewish people. We observe Jewish law if we choose to, not because they are strict rules from G-d, but because we feel they are worthwhile traditions or practices. We search for contemporary meaning and encourage active participation in the construction of a Jewish future. Judaism is seen as an "evolving religious civilisation" of the Jews. Each generation of Jews have remoulded Judaism slightly. We take this into account and endeavour to nurture this. We may question things, and educate ourselves to discover individualistic pathways to enlightenment. We believe in the human heart and a God who is the origin of our kindness, sensitivity and consideration for the world around us. God is the "power within us" that encourages us to focus on self-development and moral action. We discover God when we search for meanning in the world, when we are inspired to learn and when we recognise ethical and social justice issues. We realise Judaism is more than a religion, it also represents the history and destiny of the Jewish people. It includes a dedication to Israel and the Hebrew language, Jewish culture, Jewish morality, Jewish philosophy, Jewish Literature and Jewish Art.

    Reconstructionist Judiasm
Reconstructionist Judiasm is the most left-wing affiliation in Judiasm, in that it redefines Jewish religious values and idealogy. The reconstructionist movement, who's original purpose was to "reconstruct" Judiasm to entice the fifty percent of non-affiliated Jews in 1930's Ameica to return to Judiasm. The founder of the reconstructionist movement, Mordecai M. Kaplan, launched the movement in the in the 1920's with the creation of a reconstructionist magazine and his book, Judiasm as a Civilization: Toward a Reconstruction of American Jewish Life . His beliefs endorsed traditional Jewish customs and practices, but the reasoning changed from the Lord's creation to Sancta , a concept that rituals are made holy due to the unity and community of the people preformiong them, as opposed to the traditional Jewish view that customs are obligated due to God's command. Reconstructionist Judiasm thereby dismisses the concept of an all-powerful God as a creator, and beleives that God is a force or presence that maintains the Jewish People. Therefore, God is not a supernatural being, and refrences to the personification of God are removed. Reconstructionist texts also lack any refrences to God's miracles or revalation to the Jewish people.

Reconstructionist Judaism Back to Last Page Glossary Index Related Terms Judaism
    Definition:
Reconstructionist Judaism is a modern Jewish movement founded by Mordecai M. Kaplan (1881-1982) in the early 20th century in an effort to further reform Judaism for the modern era, and especially for American culture. His book Judaism as a Civilization: Toward a Reconstruction of American Jewish Life sets forth his goals and ideas most clearly. Reconstructionist Judaism treats Judaism as a culture which constantly adapts in order to ensure its own survival. Such adaptation is not bad, but is instead simply a natural part of the social process. Thus, in some ways, Reconstructionist Judaism can be even more liberal than Reform Judaism - it doesn't even require members to be theists or, if they are, that they believe that God singled out the Jewish people in any fashion. In other ways, however, Reconstructionists can be more conservative because they observe more of Jewish law. Even then, though, they do not do so merely because it is traditional.
