RECONSTRUCTIONIST JUDAISM IS
A progressive, contemporary approach to Jewish life which integrates a deep respect for traditional Judaism with the insights and ideas of contemporary social, intellectual and spiritual life. Judaism as the Culture of the Jewish People For Reconstructionists, Judaism is more than Jewish religion; Judaism is the entire cultural legacy of the Jewish people. Religion is central; Jewish spiritual insights and religious teachings give meaning and purpose to our lives. Yet our creativity as expressed through art, music and drama, languages and literature, and our relationship with the land of Israel itself are also integral parts of Jewish culture. Each of these aspects provides a gateway into the Jewish experience that can enrich and inspire us. Community as Cornerstone While deeply connected to the historical experience of the Jewish people, we find a profound sense of belonging in our contemporary communities as well. This connection often leads to increased ritual observance and experimentation with the ritual rhythms of Jewish life. We find meaning in rediscovering the richness of traditional ritual and creating new observances which respond to our contemporary communal and personal cycles. As we come to know ourselves as part of a community and create our own patterns of religious living, we create the context in which to join the spiritual quest that is so important in our time. In moments of prayer, song, social action and story we experience the reality of God, and we join in study and discussion where searching is as central as finding.

Reconstructionism This is an essay explaining what Reconstructionists believe. It is a Reconstructionist approach to spirituality. Reconstructionist Judaism: Faith You Can Believe In by Rabbi Gary S. Fink Oseh Shalom Congregation Reconstructionist Judaism For those in search of faith you can believe in, Reconstructionism might be the answer. Reconstructionist Judaism blends ancient tradition with contemporary thought in exciting and compelling ways. It brings together the intellectual clarity of our modern world, the dynamic spirituality of our mystical tradition, and the wellspring of faith from our rabbinic heritage. Through its unique spirituality and through its calling, Reconstructionist Judaism gives us a meaningful way to look at the world, and pathways to guide and enrich our lives. Reconstructionist Judaism is a product of 4,000 years of human experience and spiritual development. It enhances the spirit but does not close the mind. It leads us to a way of life whose goal is simple and profound -making a better world. When activated, Reconstructionist Judaism ennobles us and enables us. It ennobles us by making our lives more meaningful. And it enables us to bring wholeness and healing to our world.

"It's not so much that we're afraid of change or so in love with the old ways, but it's that place in between that we fear . . . It's like being between trapezes. It's Linus when his blanket is in the dryer. There's nothing to hold on to." Marilyn Ferguson A Changing Judaism in a Changing World
By Adriana Nodar My rabbi once shared a joke about Reconstructionist Judaism being the most misunderstood movement in Judaism. It goes, "Do you know what the anti-semite did to the Reconstructionist Jewish family? He burnt a question mark on their lawn." My non-practicing family (my mom is Jewish and my dad is Catholic) joined a Reconstructionist synagogue when I was sixteen; I've identified myself with the movement ever since. Mordecai Kaplan was the founder of Reconstructionist philosophy and is arguably the most influential American Jewish thinker of the 20th century. He said, "As the upbuilding of Eretz Yisrael is necessary to the reconstruction of Jewish life in the Diaspora, so is the Reconstruction of Jewish life in the Diaspora necessary to the rehabilitation of Eretz Yisrael." Among the many other philosophies of the movement, I think this statement especially holds true right now during this time of change. We can all relate to this idea in the context of the extremely volatile situation in Israel. Plus, we face challenges every day as we try to decide which Jewish practices we want to keep up and which we want to modify to better suit our daily lives.

Our Philosophy
Havurat Tikvah's philosophy has been influenced by three important Jewish movements: The Havurah Movement, the Reconstructionist Movement, and the Jewish Renewal Movement. These philosophies influence how we focus on community, spirituality, inclusion, and the meaning of ritual celebration. In November 1999 Havurat Tikvah formally affiliated with the Jewish Reconstructionist Federation. The three Jewish movements overlap, but each has a specific focus:
The Havurah Movement
The Hebrew word "Havurah" can be translated as "friendship," "fellowship," "community," or "collective." A Havurah is a relatively small group of individuals and families who come together to explore many aspects of Judaism. Havurah members may share Torah study, worship, lifecycle celebrations, and support in times of trouble. A Havurah draws on the energy and ideas of all its members, and so offers a creative and diverse experience of Judaism. American Havurot come together through the National Havurah Committee. The Committee, founded in 1973, sponsors an annual conference, a newsletter, and technical support of all kinds to growing Havurot.

a progressive, contemporary approach to Jewish life which integrates a deep respect for traditional Judaism with the insights and ideas of contemporary social, intellectual and spiritual life.
Judaism as the Culture of the Jewish People
For Reconstructionists, Judaism is more than Jewish religion; Judaism is the entire cultural legacy of the Jewish people.
Community as Cornerstone
While deeply connected to the historical experience of the Jewish people, we find a profound sense of belonging in our contemporary communities as well. This connection often leads to increased ritual observance and experimentation with the ritual rhythms of Jewish life. We find meaning in rediscovering the richness of traditional ritual and creating new observances which respond to our contemporary communal and personal cycles.
