Rosicrucianism Rosicrucianism is a mystical belief system and ideology that pursues spiritual and alchemical goals largely through Occult and Christian Gnostic paths. However, throughout history its endeavors have largely been to gain material power on the material plane, and the deep Gnostic teachings have become twisted. The core of the Secret Doctrine of Rosicrucianism, or Mystic Christianity , is the pursuit of psychic power to control the mind of one's self and others. Through the control of one's will, one gains the unification of one's psychic energies, although it is accepted that certain negative emotions such as guilt, are the inevitable consequence of attempts to control another human being. However, the doctrine overcomes these human feelings by requiring the student to "polarize themselves at the positive pole of a particular emotional state, and by a process of refusing or denial they manage to escape the effects of the swing of the emotional pendulum to the negative pole." The philosophy goes so far as to state that there is no difference between these two poles or opposites and thus negativity or darkness can be perceived as positivity and light. The Master has learned to strengthen his own will, and control others, directly through the repression of his emotions. The initiated Rosicrucian therefore looks upon the pain and suffering of the world as being no different from the opposing pole of peace and happiness, and in fact believes that one cannot exist without the other. Thus for peace to exist in one country, war must be raging in another, for wealth and abundance to exist in one region, poverty and famine must exist in another.

The Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne was said to have founded a Rosicrucian lodge at Toulouse in the 9th century AD, and in 898 AD a second lodge was founded. Around 1000 AD a group of heretical Catholic monks established the first Rosicrucian college which flourished until the 16th century. It has also been claimed that the Brotherhood of the Rose Cross was founded by Templars after their order was disbanded by Pope Clement. Historical story: The Fama Fraternitatis appeared in 1614 (written in 1610), describing the foundation and purpose of the Society (Brotherhood) of the Rose Cross. This related that a Father CRC, born in 1378, a German, poor but from a rich and noble family, made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. He remained at Damascus through ill-health, and studied there. He later traveled to Damcar, where he was trained by the Arabs, and translated the book "M" into the Latin tongue. He then traveled to Fez, and after two years to Spain, where meeting with ridicule, he returned to Germany. After five years he called three of his brethren to him, bound them by an oath, and then founded the "Fraternity of the Rose Cross". They later initiated another four members, and decided to spread the word to other countries. Their by-laws were that they should heal the sick without charge; wear the clothes of the country they visited; every year upon a certain date should meet, or be represented, in the "House of the Holy Spirit"; each should search for a worthy replacement for when he dies; that the letters R.C. would be their mark; that the Order would remain secret for 100 years. It was later also decided that burial places would be kept a secret.

The wording carries a very strong echo of a powerful speech in the play, The Two Noble Kinsmen , which bears the unmistakable imprint of William Shakespeare's unique poetic talent. This familiarity with the Bard's play is unlikely to have been purely accidental, particularly, as I have shown elsewhere, Maier had a significant connection with Shakespeare's circle of friends.1 The question inevitably arises, therefore, of what clear evidence exists to indicate that the traditional Germanocentric reading of the history of early Rosicrucianism - which depicts the movement as mainly gestating in the strivings of J.V. Andreae's personal circle - oversimplifies the movement's origins to the point of gross distortion?
