Facts About Friends by Ted Hoare member of Australia Yearly Meeting Welcome to our Meeting This leaflet provides a brief introduction to the Religious Society of Friends and we hope it will stimulate requests for further information which is available in other publications. Our Christian Background The origins of the Society are found in the seventeenth century in England, a time when many were questioning the established beliefs of the age. George Fox (1625-1691) did not find answers to his questions in any of the churches of his day. Out of his searching came the spiritual message which swept a large part of the country and which resulted in the formation of the Religious Society of Friends. Friends witnessed to an Alternative Christianity quite distinct from the churches of the time. As a result they were persecuted both by Cromwell's Puritan government and by the restored government of Charles II. Fox did not intend to start a new sect. He wanted to persuade the church to return to what it had been in the days of the Apostles. He proclaimed the early preaching of Peter (Acts, chapter 2 and 3) that Jesus, who had been present in the flesh, had risen from the dead and was now come in the Spirit. That Jesus acted in the hearts of his followers purifying and empowering them. Pursuing Peter's teaching, Fox called for a radical, egalitarian, spirit-filled Christianity that would not be oppressive of people on account of race, sex, or class. He maintained that the message of the early church had been lost when the church became institutionalized and believed that he, and others with him, could stand in exactly the same state as Apostles, with the same power to teach, to heal, and to prophesy that the Apostles had.

"Serving Humanism and Humanity since 1939" THE STORY OF THE HUMANIST SOCIETY OF FRIENDS In July of 1939, a group of Quakers, after reading the 1933 Humanist Manifesto and being greatly moved by it, made the big decision to leave the Quaker movement and become part of the new Humanist movement. In its tenets, they saw the promise of a genuine marriage between science and ethics that would put into action a new kind of religion and forge a new understanding of the word "religion". Humanism was to them a concept echoing the admonition voiced by Sir Morley of England, who said: "The next great task of Science is the building of a new religion," and which affirmed the thoughts of Sir Julian Huxley in his book Evolution in Action, where he wrote of "Evolutionary Humanism" as "perhaps capable of becoming the germ of a new religion ... justified by facts." It was therefore with the goal in mind that this small band of former Quakers were responsible in 1939 for incorporating under the state laws of California the "Humanist Society of Friends" as a religious, educational, charitable nonprofit organization authorized to issue charters anywhere in the world, and to train and ordain its own ministry, who upon ordination were then accorded the same rights and privileges granted by law to the priests, ministers, and rabbis of traditional theistic religions. Today, the Humanist Society of Friends works as a subsidiary of the American Humanist Association to certify qualified members to serve in this special capacity, having assumed the duties of the American Humanist Association's former Division of Humanist Counseling.

Email In 1643 George Fox , a shoemaker from Nottingham , began toured the country giving sermons where he argued that consecrated buildings and ordained ministers were irrelevant to the individual seeking God. Three years later Fox had a divine revelati on that inspired him to preach a gospel of brotherly love. Fox formed a group called the Friends of Truth. Later they became known as the Society of Friends. Fox's central dogma was that of the inner light, communicated directly to the individual soul by Christ. After 1656 followers of Fox refused to attend Anglican services or pay tithes . This resulted in George Fox being arrested. On one occasion the judge told Fox "to quake in the presence of the lord" and afterwards members of the Society of Friends became known as Quakers.

While the multitudes have followed tribal and national leaders in considering warfare to be sometimes justifiable, a few men and women of conscience have held steadfastly to non-violence as an ethical and religious commitment. These persons of conscience have represented every variety of religious, philosophical, and cultural identity. Significant has been the peace witness of groups such as the Society of Friends. Humanism has been historically concerned with issues of peace. Other References of Interest Who are the Quakers? Quakers, or members of the Society of Friends, are a sect of Christians who believe that an "Inner Light" within each individual is a divine revelation. As such, the Quakers have no ordained ministers, rather members of the congregation may speak as they are moved to do so. However, local congregations may recognize that an individual has a particular gift for speaking and acknowledge this to other congregations. In such a way, several individuals have become renowned Quaker "missionaries" and have traveled through many areas to share their gifts. Of utmost importance to Quakers is their lifestyle, and the local congregations are responsible for disciplining members for straying from the accepted way of life. The "rules" of the Quakers may seem quite strict. They were not allowed to attend dances, drink liquor, marry non-Quakers, marry without prior approval, or live in luxurious ways. Quaker settlements were prominent in the early days of Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and New Jersey. The Carolinas also provided homes for Quakers. The Philadelphia area is particularly rich in Quaker history. As the American Westward expansion took place, the Quaker religion also moved westward into Ohio and beyond. A large Quaker settlement was located in eastern Ohio, in the counties of Belmont and Jefferson. Westward expansion continued into Indiana and Illinois.
