Toda, later the second president of the soka gakkai, was an innovative educatorwho was deeply committed to the ideals and practice of Nichiren buddhism.
http://www.sado.freeserve.co.uk/sensei.htm
Daisaku Ikeda, president of the Soka Gakkai International (SGI), was born on January 2, 1928, in Tokyo, Japan. His family's business was producing a form of edible seaweed. His interests include poetry, art, music, philosophy and photography.
Mr. Ikeda is a Buddhist thinker, author and educator who believes that only through personal interaction and dialogue across cultural and philosophical boundaries can human beings nurture the trust and understanding that is necessary for lasting peace. To date, he has traveled to more than 50 countries in pursuit of this ideal, holding discussions with many distinguished political, cultural and educational figures.
Ikeda was seventeen when the Second World War ended in 1945. His four elder brothers had been drafted for military service, and the eldest was killed in combat. The anguish of those days left an indelible impression on the young Ikeda and prompted his life-long endeavor to root out the fundamental causes of human conflict.
In 1947, Ikeda met Josei Toda, the man who was to become his mentor and play a decisive role in shaping the course of his life. Toda, later the second president of the Soka Gakkai, was an innovative educator who was deeply committed to the ideals and practice of Nichiren Buddhism. During the war, he was imprisoned together with the first Soka Gakkai president Tsunesaburo Makiguchi-who later died in prison-by the authorities because of their opposition to Japanese militarism. Upon his release in July 1945, Toda dedicated his life to the development of the Soka Gakkai and the realization of a humane society.

The Soka Gakkai Dictionary of Buddhism Published
The Soka Gakkai Dictionary of Buddhism was published on November 18, 2002, in commemoration of the Soka Gakkai's 72nd anniversary. The 1,000-page dictionary, which contains more than 2,700 entries including cross references, is a major revision and expansion of A Dictionary of Buddhist Terms and Concepts , published in 1983. There are virtually no other English-language dictionaries of Buddhist terms with so many entries.
In 1952, the Soka Gakkai published the Nichiren Daishonin gosho zenshu (The Complete Works of Nichiren Daishonin), a publication project initiated and supervised by Josei Toda, second president of the Soka Gakkai. Since that time, translation into various languages of Nichiren's writings has been progressing steadily.
In the fall of 1999, the Soka Gakkai published

Nam Myoho Renge Kyo
My practice of the buddhist faith has added a very profound dimension to my life. Studying and practicing buddhism, specifically the buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin, assures one's life will experience a human revolution. That for me has truly been a fact. And because of my practice, at this time in my life, I am realizing the wonderful benefits that this Buddhism promises. Oh yes, there have been obstacles. Many of them and they are to be expected. However, with faith, study and practice my life is filled with peace and with great happiness. This addition to my web site is a dedication and an appreciation of the Buddhism of Nichren Daishonin. It is a part of my work toward attaining Buddhahood. Most of all, I hope that you will enjoy your visit. Our world needs Kosen-rufu.
BUTSUDAN

The Butsudan (Japanese: Buddha House) is the cabinet where you enshrine your Gohonzon to protect it.
The butsudan or cabinet is usually made of wood.
It can range from a simple, plain design to elaborate finishes and hardware.
Every believer should endeavor to keep the butsudan dusted and clean and make it an attractive place for the Gohonzon.

Sorry, your browser doesn't support Java(tm). BUDDHA ESHO FUNI GOHONZON GONGYO ... SOKA GAKKAI BUDDHA
One who perceives the true nature of all life and who leads others to attain the same enlightenment.
The Buddha nature is inherent in all beings, and is characterised by the qualities of wisdom, courage, compassion and life force. ESHO FUNI
This is an illustration of the Buddhist principle of the oneness of life and environment (Jap. esho funi). Esho is a contraction of the words eho (environment) and shoho (self). Funi is an abbreviation of nini-funi (two but not two) and funi-nini (not two but two). What this actually means in practice is, fortunately, less complicated than the literal translation suggests. BUDDHA ESHO FUNI GOHONZON GONGYO ... SOKA GAKKAI GOHONZON
The scroll or mandala to which practitioners of Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism chant. Honzon means "object of fundamental respect" while Go means "worthy of honour". Nichiren Daishonin inscribed the Gohonzon as an embodiment of his own enlightenment. Most often Gohonzons take the form of a paper scroll inscribed with Chinese and Sanskrit characters in black sumi ink. Down the centre of the Gohonzon in bold characters are the words Nam-myoho-renge-kyo Nichiren representing the state of Buddhahood while the other smaller characters represent the various facets which comprise life as a whole. The intent of our practise of chanting to the Gohonzon is to reveal the state of Buddhahood which exists in each person and which Nichiren Daishonin taught could be revealed by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo to the Gohonzon and teaching others to do likewise.

PRAYER IN BUDDHISM Prayer is central to the practice of Nichiren Buddhism. SGI members often relate experiences of "offering earnest prayer," or "praying from the bottom of my heart." They also speak of having their prayers "answered." What do SGI members mean when they make such statements? The Webster's Third International Dictionary defines prayer as "a solemn and humble approach to Divinity in word or thought, usually involving beseeching, petition, confession, praise, or thanksgiving." In what way does the Buddhist understanding of prayer accord with this definition, and how does it differ? Prayer appears to be a universal human activity. There is evidence to suggest that humans have been engaged in some form of "prayer" since the earliest days of our species. As soon as humans developed a consciousness of their relative powerlessness before the forces of nature, the precariousness of their existence and their own mortality, they no doubt began giving expression to intense feelings of petition, praise or thanksgiving. SGI President Daisaku Ikeda has written that religion grew from prayer; that the sentiment and act of prayer precedes the forms that different religious traditions have since given this primordial human act. Buddhist prayer likewise may be thought of as a focused expression of these same sentiments of yearning, commitment and appreciation. It is, however, distinguished by the fact that Buddhism locates the divine within the life of the individual practitioner. The purpose of Buddhist prayer is to awaken our innate inner capacities of strength, courage and wisdom rather than to petition external forces.

Buddhism: An Overview
Buddhism is the body of religious teachings attributed to or associated with Shakyamuni (also known as Buddha, Gautama Buddha or Siddhartha). The exact dates of Shakyamuni's life remain unclear; Buddhist scholars, however, generally agree that he lived between the fifth and seventh centuries BCE.
According to tradition, Buddhism began when Shakyamuni sought a way to transcend human suffering, in particular the four sufferings of birth, old age, sickness and death. In a moment of profound religious inspiration, he awakened to the fundamental reality of life and the universe, a condition known as enlightenment or Buddhahood. Based on this realization, Shakyamuni taught a way for all people to overcome suffering by challenging negative or difficult circumstances thereby fulfilling their potential.
In the 50 years he is believed to have spent preaching in India, Shakyamuni left behind many teachings that were committed to writing in later ages and called sutras. Some sutras point out that the basic causes of suffering are attachments to transient phenomena such as fame and wealth; he urges followers to break their ties to mundane desires and the impermanent world. Others, in particular the Lotus Sutra , hold that people can overcome suffering by learning to control desires and direct them toward positive ends.

The Soka Gakkai International
"Soka Gakkai" means "Society for the Creation of Value". The SGI is an international lay organisation of Buddhists following the teachings of Nichiren Daishonin . It has some 12 million members in 163 countries. There are two aspects to the SGI. The first is its support of the Buddhist practice of its members. The spreading of Buddhism, teaching those who are interested, is the responsibility of individual Buddhists. The second aspect of the SGI is its relationship with society. The SGI does not directly promote Buddhism as a public organisation, but seeks to transmit its spirit through education, cultural exchange and activities in support of peace, such as educational campaigns about the threat of nuclear weapons. As an Non-Governmental Organisation of the United Nations, it supports the UN and UNHCR (UN High Commission for Refugees).
History of the SGI
The SGI has its roots in the Soka Gakkai. Originally founded as an educational society in Japan in 1930 by first President Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, the Soka Gakkai was rejuvenated as a general lay society under the leadership of second President Josei Toda after the second World War, who led it through rapid expansion to nearly a million families in the fifties. In 1959, Daisaku Ikeda became the third President of the Soka Gakkai, founding the Soka Gakkai International (SGI) in 1975.

This is a Mahayana tradition based on the Lotus Sutra, and our practice involves chanting and focusing on a mandala called the Gohonzon. We believe that all beings possess the Buddha nature and can realize it through this practice. It was with great interest that I opened up Soka Gakkai in America: Accommodation and Conversion . As a researcher of the Soka Gakkai and Nichiren Buddhism since 1973, I hoped that my own qualitative data gathered from a primarily Religious Studies perspective would be verified by the extensive statistical data collected and analyzed by Phillip Hammond and David Machacek. I was relieved and pleased to find that not only were our bodies of research in essential agreement in most major areas, but also that their detailed and mathematically sophisticated statistical approach taught me many things that qualitative data and less scientific sampling did not. My only reservation is that this study attempts to explain what is a deeply personal spiritual experience for practitioners of Nichiren Buddhism from a purely social scientific perspective, although admittedly this is their purpose.
