Nichiren Buddhism
Doctrines The Nichiren, Pure Land and Zen schools initially emphasised different facets of Tendai teachings, but they soon outgrew their 'parent', Tendai.
Nichiren (1222-1282), a learned monk and resolute devotee of the Lotus Sutra (Japanese; Myoho-Renge-Kyo or Hoke-Kyo), preached uncompromisingly against other 'evil' forms of Buddhism, including Zen, Shingon and Pure Land. His aim was to restore pure Tendai teaching, which focused on the Lotus Sutra. According to Chinese thought, the Buddha had gradually revealed more and more of the true Dharma during his life. In Nichiren's view, the Lotus Sutra was the only, not just the final, revelation of the truth.
For Nichiren, reciting the mystic phrase 'Namu Myoho Renge Kyo' ('Hail to the Lotus Sutra') was the quintessence of Buddhist practice. If adopted throughout the country it could transform Japan and then the world into a Buddha-land. Nichiren's teachings, though based on a sophisticated knowledge of the Buddhist scriptural tradition, are set out in the form of intriguing vernacular dialogues between a devotee of the Lotus Sutra and an unbeliever, and in letters sent by Nichiren to various disciples during his lifetime. Central to his teaching is the Tendai notion of 'three thousand worlds in one instant of thought'. This conveys the idea that at any moment we can experience hell or, by invoking the power of the Lotus Sutra, the highest enlightenment. Central to Nichiren's doctrine was a mission to convert the shogun, emperor and all the people of Japan to devotion to the Lotus Sutra.

    Soka Gakkai International - USA
    I. Profile Report
  • Name: Soka Gakkai International is the official name of the lay organization of the Nichiren Shoshu Buddhist religion.
  • Founder: Nikko Shonin started the religion in Japan. Tsunesaburo Makiguchi and Josei Toda began the lay group Soka Gakkai, and Masayasu Sadanaga (who changed his name to George M. Williams) began the group in the United States.
  • Date of Births: Not found
  • Years Founded: Shonin founded the group sometime after 1290 by erecting a temple at the foot of Mt. Fuji. The group was relatively small until Makiguchi and Toda formed Soka-kyoiku-gakkai (Value-creating, Education Society) in 1930. Sadanaga brought the religion to the United States (Washington D.C.) in 1957.
  • Brief History: Nichiren Daishonin (the Great Holy One) (1222-1282) was a Buddhist reformer who believed that a greater Buddha than Sakyamuni would redeem earth. When he died, some of his followers were chosen to protect and upkeep his tomb. After a dispute over the responsibility, Nikko Shonin left the group and established a temple, Taiseki-ji, at the foot of Mt. Fuji. The religion lived, in small numbers, until Makiguchi, at odds with the Japanese government (who held as a state religion, Shintoism), established the Soka Gakkai. He was arrested for his beliefs and died in jail. Toda became president of the group and rallied 300,000 peasants at Makiguchi's funeral. The religion rapidly developed a large lay membership. The group grew in Japan under the leadership of Toda.

    http://www.cebunet.com/sgi/distortion.htm
Update: The deadline for SGI USA's campaign to use Buddhist prayers to cause misfortune amoung another religious group was on 11-18-99. The campaign failed miserably, as was expected by most outsiders. The campaign seems to have had the reverse affect- that is, more people have been reported coming to the temples , and at least 3 SGI centers were closed down in different areas of the USA in 1999. SGI lost many hundreds of old and new members alike because of the hatred and fanatic obsession the organization eminates in their publications and at meetings . Many SGI members have even gone as far as to say that it is getting "scary" at meetings, and new people are not returning. Because of the failure of SGI's policies in the USA, SGI General Director Fred Zaitsu was uncerimoniously removed from his position and replaced by a reportedly "more militant" SGI leader, Danny Nagashima. This, despite the fact that Mr Zaitsu was just appointed for a 3 year term just 6 months ago. Many SGI members have expressed dismay Soka Gakkai International: Buddhism or Voodism? Soka Gakkai Today - Peace?
In December of 1997, SGI implemented yet another escalation of their holy war against Nichiren Shoshu Buddhists, and temples. A meeting was held in Germany to discuss actions that SGI was taking against the temple that expelled their leader, Daisaku Ikeda. The meeting was headed by Soka Gakkai Europe "chairman" Yuichiro Kitano. SGI leaders were given directions to spy, harass and interfere with the Buddhist community in Europe and Africa. Also stated in the memo are several incidents discussed that SGI caused concerning their campaign against Buddhism. The complete memo that was made of the meeting for distribution from SGI headquarters in Germany can be found below.

Nichiren Daishonin The Buddhist approach to inner tranquillity, according to Nichiren Daishonin, the 13th century Japanese Buddhist monk whose thoughts form the base of the Soka Gakkai movement, begins by the fundamental act of surmounting deluded impulses or inner poisons. Then, through spiritual practice, the energy inherent in these impulses is transformed into an illuminating 'flame' of enlightened wisdom. In the resulting tranquil state, the light of enlightened wisdom shines brilliantly, unblocked and unhindered by the clouds of deluded impulses.
Deeply perturbed by the constant suffering all around despite the all-pervasive influence of Buddhism, Daishonin sought an answer in a thorough study of the various Buddhist sutras and treatises of renowned scholars. His studies brought him to the conclusion that the Lotus Sutra was the highest of Buddhist teachings and the misery of humankind emanated out of our disregard for this teaching.

As a teenager during WW II, Mr.Ikeda experienced the horrors of war through the death and devastation around him, including the death of his eldest brother on the Burmese front. He developed a deep-rooted abhorrence to war and a respect for those who had undergone persecution by the state for their anti-war beliefs but had not compromised their convictions. In 1947, at age 19, he met such a personJosei Toda. Soon after their meeting, Mr. Ikeda joined Soka Gakkai and began working as editor for a boy's magazine that Mr. Toda published. He became Mr. Toda's most trusted aide in the organization. In 1960, two years after Mr. Toda's death, Mr. Ikeda became the third Soka Gakkai president. During Mr. Ikeda's presidency, the organization expanded in Japan and internationally. At the same time he was instrumental in establishing various institutions to apply Buddhist principles in the fields of peace, culture and education. Among these are Soka University and other Soka schools, from kindergarten through high school; the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum; the Min-On Concert Association; and the Toda Institute for Global Peace and Policy Research. In 1971, Mr. Ikeda began a series of discussions with the British historian Arnold Toynbee which were later published under the title Choose Life. Mr. Ikeda has since criss-crossed the globe inpursuit of peace and has met with leading scholars, activists, ordinary citizens and world leaders, among them former Brazilian Academy of Letters president Austregesilo de Athayde, Norwegian peace scholar Johan Galtung and former Soviet Union president Mikhail Gorbachev.

This volume in Signature's Studies in Contemporary Religion series follows earlier books on Scientology and the Unification Church. Like its predecessors, it is noteworthy for its brevity and balanced approach to a controversial religious movement. Soka Gakkai ("Value-Creating Society"), an offshoot of Nichiren Buddhism that began in Japan shortly before World War II, has become an international movement with several million members. It emphasizes the power of individuals to transform themselves and then promote peace and compassion in the world. Dobbelaere discusses recurring tensions between SG leaders and Nichiren monks, the differences in SG practices around the world, and the movement's educational and cultural institutions.

    Singapore Soka Association
ABOUT US The Singapore Soka Association (SSA) was officially registered with the Registry of Societies in 1972 as a Buddhist society that aims to promote the understanding and practice of Nichiren Buddhism. Besides promoting Buddhist faith, the organization is also committed on working for social harmony and progress founded on the Buddhist principle of respect for the dignity of life. There are 25,000 believers participating in SSA activities presently. The Nichiren School of Buddhism was founded in 13th-century Japan by the sage Nichiren. The School flourished in its country of origin through the efforts of the lay organization Soka Gakkai (established 1930), the forerunner of the present international movement, the Soka Gakkai International (SGI). "Soka" translated to mean "value-creation", describes the core spirit of the Buddhist philosophy; that is, Buddhism is a religion of self-empowerment. The Buddhist practitioner cultivates innate potential and power, expressed in one's enhanced wisdom and spirituality to change life and environment towards positive growth. This principle of value-creation is the principle of action upheld by SGI members worldwide. Address : 10 Tampines Street 81
