spiritualism (spiritism)
Spiritualism or spiritism is the belief that the human personality survives death and can communicate with the living through a sensitive medium . The spiritualist movement began in 1848 in upstate New York with the Fox sisters who claimed that spirits communicated with them by rapping on tables. (The "raps" were actually made by cracking their toe joints.) By the time the sisters admitted their fraud some thirty years later, there were tens of thousands of mediums holding séances where spirits entertained with numerous magical tricks such as making sounds, materializing objects, making lights glow, levitating tables and moving objects across the room. The mediums demonstrated every variety of psychic power from clairvoyance and clairaudience to telekinesis and telepathy . Repeated charges of fraud did little to stop the spiritualist movement until the 1920's when magicians such as Houdini exposed the techniques and methods of deceit used by mediums to fool even the wisest and holiest of men and women.

Spiritualism. Sometimes called Spiritism. What is it, and what do Spiritualists believe ? Well it depends where you live. It appears that a number of people have attempted to make statements like "All Spiritualist believe........" Unfortunately it turns out that these various definitions are different. For example one spiritualist group in the U.S. suggests that spiritualists don't believe in reincarnation. Here in Australia though many spiritualists do believe in reincarnation. Other spiritualists believe that all spiritualists should be Christian. Not surprisingly some feel the opposite ! So is there anything all spiritualists believe in ? It seems that there aren't a lot of things they believe in worldwide however it seems that everyone appears to agree on the following points.
  • A belief in a higher power (God) A belief in life after physical death A belief in communication to/from the spirit world.

However Lavater did set forth some axioms that served as the direct forerunners of Gall's phrenology as well as what could be termed the Victorian obsession with death. According to physiognomy the "form height, arching, proportion, obliquity, and position of the skull, or bone of the forehead show the propensity, degree of power, thought, and sensibility of man"(378). Lavater formulated some easier to remember axioms such as "the more the chin, the more the man"(231) and "as are the lips so is the character"(394).12 Even more fascinating was Lavater's description of the dead countenance: Of the many dead persons I have seen, I have uniformly observed that sixteen, eighteen, or twenty-four hours after death (depending on the disease) they have had a more beautiful form, better defined, more proportionate, harmonized, homogenous, more noble, more exalted than they ever had during life(371).13 Here Lavater can be seen anticipating the spiritualist craze in England and America by at least one hundred years. Equally as important there is evidence in Elizabeth Gaskell's

Spiritualism
The term "spiritualism" has been frequently used to denote the belief in the possibility of communication with disembodied spirits, and the various devices employed to realize this belief in practice. The term "Spiritism" Aristotle fully recognized the spirituality of the higher rational activity of thought, but his treatment of its precise relation to the individual human soul is obscure. On the other hand, his conception of the union of soul and body, and of the unity of the human person, is much superior to that of Plato. Though the future life of the human soul, and consequently its capacity for an existence separate from the body, was one of the most fundamental and important doctrines of the Christian religion , yet ideas as to the precise meaning of spirituality were not at first clear, and we find several of the earliest Christian writers (though maintaining the future existence of the soul separate from the body), yet conceiving the soul in a more or less materialistic way (cf. Justin, Irenaeus, Tertullian , Clement, etc.). The Catholic philosophic doctrine of Spiritualism received much of its development from St. Augustine, the disciple of Platonic philosophy, and its completion from Albertus Magnus and St. Thomas, who perfected the

Arthur Conan Doyle, Spiritualism, and Fairies
By Donald E. Simanek While many of Arthur Conan Doyle's books are available as e-text on the Internet, and many web sites are devoted to him and his work, there's scant mention of Doyle's credulous acceptance of spiritualism, fairies and other occult ideas. This is a small effort to remedy that omission. "Modern" spiritualism began in the United States in the mid 19th century. Specifically, it arose in Western New York state, a region known to social historians for the religious fervor which made it a spawning ground for many religious sects. They refer to it as the "infected district" or the "burned over district." Spiritualism was born in the fertile religious fervor of immigrant Swedenborgians, Mesmerists, and other religions, a climate of thought receptive to spiritualist ideas. Mainstream religions promised eternal life, but in an era of emerging science which demanded verifiable physical evidence, many religious persons wished for tangible evidence of the claims of relgion, particularly of claims of an afterlife. The fox home was moved to the

M y fieldwork concerned belief and practice in Spiritualism in contemporary England. There has not been, as far as I know, any recently anthropological investigation concerning Spiritualism in western societies. The exception is Swatos' study of a famous Icelandic medium, but still, that study is not contemporary. My choice of ethnographic region was England because Britain was the first European country which opened itself for Spiritualism when it first came from the US to Europe in the late 19.th century. T hen, in the last part of the 19.th century and the first part of the 20.th century, Spiritualism grew rapidly and spread to all parts of the population in England and in the continental Europe.
S piritualism divided into physical mediumship and mental mediumship. Christian Spiritualists was fighting against the church and the non-Christian Spiritualists. Some parts of the Spiritualist-movement turned to New-Age movements, while still others became influenced on numerous other ways. But still, the main thing in Spiritualism endures: the belief in the Afterlife, and the possibility to communicate with those on the other side. "The Death is the biggest Lie on earth" T here has been a lot of investigation concerning Spiritualism, but not about Spiritualism in general. The early and later researchers were all concerned about how to prove or disprove

  • Date of Birth:
  • Birth Place: Sweden
  • Year Founded: Swedenborg started his work in 1744, but modern spiritualism was made popular in the U.S. by the Fox sisters in 1848.
  • Brief History: Even before modern spiritualism was founded in 1848, many of the ideas of this belief system were already in circulation. The Swedish scientist Emanuel Swedenborg is credited with being the first significant practitioner and promoter of the central tenets of spiritualism. Swedenborg claimed to be able to communicate with spirits and travel through the spirit world, and his followers believed that he was a highly skilled medium. He wrote many books on his experiences, though he said that the books were not written by himself. Rather, he claimed they were inspired by spirits and angels from the spirit world. Some of his books, he claimed, were inspired by infants. He also claimed to have developed skillful powers of clairivoyance and psychic ability. From his study of dreams, Swedenborg concluded, came predictions of future events. Swedenborg demonstrated his ability before Queen Louisa Ulrica of Sweden. He told her that he knew about a secret correspondence that she had had with her brother while he was still alive because he was able to communicate with his dead spirit. Swedenborg also helped people find things that deceased relatives had left for them.

When I was growing up whenever someone was caught telling a lie we always said "Liar, Liar, pants on fire!". Childish, yes, but very appropriate if you think about it. All cults have several things in common. First, they mimic Christianity , though they are only a pseudo-form of the truth. Several of the cults, like the Mormon Church, have gone so far into mimicry that they are actually considered a separate denomination like the Presbyterian or Methodist Churches. Second, the cults twist the Scripture to suit their platform of belief, rather than conform what they believe to what the Scripture teaches. Many of the cults, though not all, use various forms of brainwashing techniques to gather and retain their converts. They use holy deception , as they call it, to trick a person into their midst, then on tearing down the barriers of the person's old belief system they slowly inculcate the new, cultic doctrines. "Liar, Liar, pants on fire!" is a true saying, for those deceived by cults are walking a pathway that can only lead to eternal damnation in the next life. Jesus said, " I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me

No one doubts the significance of this date; however, it represents but one link in a wondrous chain of events which led to the reincarnation of Ancient Spiritualism within a modern world. We want to share with you the wonder and mystery of what Spirit was attempting to do and fulfill, not simply on the evening of March 31, 1848, but prior to that fateful date and up to more recent times. Spiritualism belongs to all people and to all religions. It is a gift of and for the SPIRIT, not of and for any particular church body. We hope you enjoy these pages . Thank you and Godspeed!
